blog essays College was once a truly unique institution, set-apart, more or less, from the conventions of society. It was freedom institutionalized (ironically enough). Free for the first time in their lives, kids learned quickly that there is more to this world than what mom and dad showed #8217;em. There were boobs, there were drugs, there was life. Oh and wait, politicians aren#8217;t always truthful, either! Really? Yes, man. And answers aren#8217;t always obvious. Dissertations. Really?

Yes. Purpose Proposal. They found a lot of bullshit. They found a lot of doctoral musicology hypocrisy. People were dying! #8220;We want peace!#8221; they chanted. So they raged and character first, rioted. They broke contact with the older generation as much as possible.

They dissociated themselves as much as possible from institutionalized society the man the main purveyor of the evils they had come to hate. Maybe college isn#8217;t the bastion of freedom it once was, a small city-state set apart from conventional society. College certainly is no longer the first purveyor of the unholy fruits of truth and innocence lost. Kids see their first pair of tits and smoke their first joint long before they enter the hallowed ground of American higher education. Today, kids wake up long before college. They have a steady stream of unfiltered information coming at them on the TV and on musicology, the internet. They have learned to decipher the most complex of gadgets with ease. They have been the victims of black intense marketing and information overload, and have thus honed their skills at discriminating between the good and bad. We have a legion of kids who know from the cradle not to believe everything they hear especially from authority sources.

They have already rebelled against mom and dad during childhood and teens, so why bother keeping up the charade in college? In fact, their parents are likely divorced, giving another reason for closer contact between parent and child. Besides, they need the money. Doctoral Dissertations Musicology. The lack of book radicalism, creativity, and individualism at today#8217;s colleges (while often still vibrant) is the result of earlier innocence lost. Kids have already seen #8220;the man#8221; in highschool, in grade school, on doctoral dissertations musicology, MTV.

They do not need college to good catholic girls tell them that there are significant amounts of bullshit and hypocrisy that circulate in society at dissertations musicology, large. They do not need college to tell them of the social inequities that exist at home and abroad. They were most certainly exposed to social activism in high school, something our parents rarely encountered. Thus their earlier awakening has taught them at an earlier age to purpose do what adults do. They compromise. If you can#8217;t beat #8217;em, join #8217;em. From the doctoral dissertations, day the #8220;real#8221; collegiates (our parents, for instance) lowered their middle fingers, shaved, and got a job, from the day they started paying taxes they were compromising with society and with convention.

Once, college students thought they could change the proposal, world. But eventually they learned to doctoral musicology compromise. Adults have long learned that you have to make peace with some of the unruly mechanisms in society in order to function. Sure, smog blows, but few are willing to give up their car without a ready and available alternative. Yes, corporate America is a den of thieves but people need jobs. Yes, most people probably could distribute tax revenue better than the government, but will they really withhold their taxes? Indeed, compromise is a key aspect to adulthood. Today#8217;s kids are just as savvy. They just learned to compromise at an earlier age.

They don#8217;t necessarily wholly buy the market rhetoric they espouse, but they do realize what sorts of rhetoric moves causes along the discursive structure, pipeline. They realize the key to change is to doctoral musicology work from the inside out. Agree. This same mechanism of dissertations compromise is purpose of research, seen in our college students today. Perlstein notes the #8220;isolated-village#8221; college once was, free from the philosophical dictates of musicology leaders at large. He is surprised to encounter the market-savvy rhetoric of college educated youth in discussing, for instance, the genocide in Darfur.

These terms, Perlstein figures, are indicative of the ruling class the government, #8220;the man#8221;, everything and anything any college kid worth his salt would avoid like the plague. These kids have already lost their innocence, and have decided it is better to work with the disagree qualify essay, system than to utterly abolish it. They have learned to speak in the language of adults. This is the language which adults understand, and to musicology which they listen. Of course, these kids are still pushing their own agendas, cloaked as they are beneath adult-speak.

And of course, there still is radicalism at college. There still are those willing to stand strong against the powers that be, to stand strong against the hypocrisy they see in the government, and in purpose proposal, their communities. Loss of innocence is due to the age we live in. Children are bombarded with unfiltered info from television and the internet at doctoral, an early age. They are the victims of mass-marketing from the catholic girls, time they appear in the cradle. Their ability to decipher and sift through information is early enhanced. They can#8217;t believe everything they hear because they hear way too much. Thus, their discriminatory powers and bullshit detectors are early exercised. Yet, it is precisely this information age that make colleges more necessary than ever.

They are needed to dissertations educate and aid our youth in navigating a world that grows increasingly complex. To this end, the college has evolved to reach this new era of students, an era of early-enlightened children, who have made their deal with the devil, and yet will work to their own ends subtly, yet surely. Barbies on Wall Street: College for the Students#8217; Sake. Essay. During my first few weeks at Vassar, I was a closeted homosexual who only wore dull, frumpy sweatshirts and never said a word. Musicology. But after a while, I met an eclectic bunch of essay catholic girls people, never went to bed before one a.m., and musicology, spent a few days venturing out to contemporary art galleries in Manhattan.

Now I wear pink sweatshirts and talk quite frequently. So as I read Perlstein#8217;s article, I began to realize how different my experience at Vassar seemed from the dreary, corporatized atmosphere surrounding the University of Chicago, the agree disagree qualify essay, school where, as a friend of mine once grimly put it, #8220;fun goes to die.#8221; Sure, many of my peers are career-minded and dissertations, nearly all are academically resolute, yet there is of research proposal, always a childlike blitheness around campus that never ceases to pull us through even the most stressful pre-examination periods. Indeed, as Perlstein notes, the doctoral dissertations, gap between childhood and college has shortened, but not solely in the sense that, because of the diversity in classroom, Internet, pre-college students now have more information and ideas at their fingertips than ever before. Despite this, there is doctoral dissertations, still a very genuine, nostalgic attachment to diversity essay carefree elementary school days that I have noticed not only in Vassar students, but also in my friends at home, many of whom are still eager to revel in classic Disney movies, immerse themselves in doctoral dissertations, the latest Harry Potter book, or, as a friend and I once decided to do, organize a Barbie party. But what could all this mean? Have university students just become more puerile since the 1960s and 70s? Probably not, if Perlstein#8217;s account of the in classroom essay, University of Chicago#8217;s uncreative, humdrum zeitgeist is accurate. Doctoral Musicology. But therein lies my major objection to Perlstein#8217;s article: although it implicitly claims to be a barometer of the character grade, current collegiate psyche, its lack of any mention of any other school besides the University of musicology Chicago (save for the brief allusion to the heady Berkeley campus of 1966 in disagree essay, the introduction) immediately strips itself of that title. Perlstein tries to acknowledge his expository dilemma at one point in the article: #8220;Is their diagnosis [that life at Chicago is #8220;infantilizing#8221; and #8220;emasculating#8221;] a function of college itself today, or just this college?

Hamilton Morris told me stories that suggest the former.#8221; Yet the acknowledgment is ultimately self-defeating if Perlstein does not report on other institutions as well. Musicology. Besides, I doubt that Hamilton Morris#8217;s #8220;stories#8221; of frustration with school (notably the one in which his guidance counselor at Chicago curtly notifies him that he is #8220;not right for college#8221; and should drop out) could really suggest the former if all of discursive for ielts them deal specifically with the University of Chicago. Even Morris#8217;s classmate#8217;s declaration that #8220;college sucks anyway, so I might as well stay here,#8221; albeit a broad sentiment, is still too subjective to indicate a mass opinion. Doctoral Musicology. In all fairness, however, I certainly cannot label Perlstein as myopic without also acknowledging that my own observations of happy-go-lucky university life are innately blinkered, since I only good girls, have experience at one institution. Doctoral Musicology. But taking both of our accounts into consideration (and assuming that neither is a completely isolated, atomized instance), something quite telling stems from of research their contradiction. Campus life may be starkly different between Vassar and Chicago, but Perlstein fails to doctoral musicology indicate explicitly that it is the students themselves, whether carefree or careerist, who determine the university scene. It is fine to claim that many Chicago students have become #8220;cogs in the organization,#8221; but there is one blaring fact that Perlstein leaves out here these students are not working so diligently for the organization, but for themselves. They may become bleary-eyed and crabby in the process, but at diversity in classroom, least they#8217;re suffering for their own ends.

What we have in the modern university student, then, is really an increased self-awareness that is neither necessarily egotistic nor overtly independent. Too often, students receive admonishments for an apparent social and political lethargy that are founded solely on an unnecessary comparison with the more politically active campuses of the 1960s and 70s. In fact, many schools can still boast a heady political scene the dissertations musicology, old standbys of College Democrats and College Republicans have not gone away, but have been joined by Amnesty International and ACLU chapters, Habitat for Humanity affiliates, and, at least at Vassar, campaigns to diversity in classroom essay stop the evils of the Coca-Cola Company. Even though the media might not notice, many of doctoral dissertations us genuinely care about current affairs. But that does not mean we have to care if we don#8217;t want to, especially in an environment where more of an emphasis is placed on individual edification than on of research, social activism. No matter how apathetic and unmotivated it may seem, we can still reserve the right to unabashed political lethargy. The campus as campaign center, part of the #8220;college experience#8221; that Perlstein describes, may have lost its cultural significance, but college students most certainly have not. The populistic phenomena of Facebook, YouTube, and the like, although admittedly distracting, indicate a more active desire in college students to place themselves outside of their university bubbles, if not into dissertations musicology, the real world, then into essay, the digital one. To post a picture on dissertations, Facebook or a video on YouTube, regardless of the content, is to fish out essay, a line of hope that someone will notice it.

Although this may seem like a collective case of doctoral dissertations musicology dependence anxiety, what it actually reveals is a situation of self-advocacy. On Facebook, for instance, one can add friends, join groups, list interests and activities, post notes, deliver and receive comments in good catholic girls, a sense, network one#8217;s specific traits as an doctoral dissertations, online acquaintance. By no means are modern university students detached from the world beyond the essay catholic, college gates the Internet still holds the possibility of dissertations musicology informing us of the current goings-on, but it also allows us to extend ourselves into our own digital personae, mapping out dahlia essay, our own spaces on the web. Obviously, we do not go to college to discover ourselves on the Internet. Yet Perlstein#8217;s distinction between college and college, between necessary process and doctoral dissertations, liberating experience, still does not explain why we do. His article implies so much about the contemporary university student#8217;s life the individualization, the effects of the Internet, the shortened childhood-college gap yet it stops short of a deeper, broader understanding of the essay for ielts, situation. In a sense, the doctoral dissertations, #8220;college experience#8221; has not completely gone away it#8217;s just taken on a different form.

We might be a little less naive going into college than were previous students, but we still retain an excitement for our future advancement, whether corporate or creative, that we hope will begin if not in school, then because of diversity in classroom it. Doctoral Dissertations Musicology. Both college and college still remain crucial aspects of modern American life but only if we students get to choose the typeface. There has been a great loss in the level of activism among college students since the turbulent 1960s. Complacency reigns over the people. Today#8217;s twenty-something, anarchist-punk, bicycle-messenger population is dwindling. Those that have survived are crestfallen. The man with the thin gray goatee and a framed photograph of himself looking hairier and suspiciously uninhibited in 1972 laments, if only half seriously, that the ire of black dahlia essay this young generation cannot seem to be adequately risen.

It was different when he was young, he#8217;ll tell you. In the 1960s, you weren#8217;t a major city if you didn#8217;t have your own race riot: from Baltimore and D.C. to Watts, to doctoral musicology Newark and purpose, New York and everywhere else. But it was more than race and it was more than war, the world was changing and college campuses held all the promise the doctoral, future could hold. I am one of those young people who the disagree, man with the thin gray goatee lectures about social action. For me, Kent State is college basketball. For him, Kent State will always be four dead at the hands of the Ohio National Guard. Time changes more than clocks. I take classes at doctoral dissertations, Temple University, a school in in classroom, North Philadelphia known for its diversity and surrounded by a long history of activism.

Philadelphia is certainly a major city, so, of course, we, too, had our own 1960s race riot, a charming, two-day affair that resulted in more than 300 injuries and nearly 800 arrests in dissertations, August of 1964. The south end of Temple University is marked by Cecil B. Moore Avenue, named for a legendary civil rights lawyer in Philadelphia. Today, at Temple, Cecil B. Moore means a row of residence halls and as far south as many students will walk at night. Before, Cecil B. Black Dahlia Essay. Moore was who brought the doctoral, Rev. Black. Dr. Dissertations Musicology. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Philadelphia almost a year to the day after those race riots. Time changes more than clocks. In the summer of 1965, Moore was in dahlia, the midst of leading what would be an doctoral musicology, 8-month picket of girls Girard College, a private, then-segregated school for dissertations musicology underprivileged, orphan boys. When King showed up on a hot day in August, he addressed 3,000 demonstrators massed outside the school. #8220;It is a sad experience to stand at this wall in the 20th century in of research proposal, Philadelphia, the cradle of liberty,#8221; he orated as King was known to musicology orate. #8220;It is a kind of Berlin Wall to keep the colored children of God out.#8221; Time tells that three years later, after state and purpose of research, federal court appeals, that that racial wall finally fell and the first black students were admitted.

Things like that were happening everywhere in the country, everywhere in the world, the man with the thin gray goatee adds proudly, as if he really believes that back then one man with long hair and doctoral dissertations musicology, good music could change the essay for ielts, world. No one believes that anymore. Time changes more than clocks. Doctoral Musicology. They were times of excitement and first, confusion and fear. My own grandfather was moved enough to keep a .22 caliber rifle underneath the bed of his Long Island home, which was nestled, in dissertations, his mind, uncomfortably between New York City to the west and established black communities to the east. Why don#8217;t the children of today terrify middle-aged suburbanites into gun ownership? My generation has had our moments, but they are few, far in between, and seemingly less constructive than those of the report first grade, past.

Fifteen years ago, more than fifty died in the chaos following the Rodney King verdict in musicology, Los Angeles. Even more recently, Ohio has seen two well-publicized movements, one following a 2001 police shooting in Cincinnati and a 2005 reaction to a neo-Nazi rally in Toledo. My own North Philadelphia campus has seen social action during my lifetime. Two years before #8216;Rodney King#8217; became a household name, a brawl of some 600 students turned into essay girls, days of protests on North Broad Street, as students demonstrated against what they felt were racially-charged, overly-aggressive tactics by university police. What about that? I ask the dissertations musicology, man with the essay good catholic, thin gray goatee. Those demonstrations might be more emblematic of dissertations musicology our generational differences than anything, he counters as a father would counter a child too young to know anything.

It was fought and, by some standards, won, as Temple incorporated race courses into the university#8217;s core curriculum, but, unlike the movements of the purpose proposal, 1960s and 1970s, there wasn#8217;t staying power. Walk around Temple#8217;s campus today and it would be unlikely to find anyone who remembers campus rioting as recent as 1990. Doctoral. The man with thin gray goatee is right. That breed of social action isn#8217;t my generation#8217;s specialty. My peers and character report first, I have forgotten the dissertations musicology, great struggles of the past, we are without Kennedys and Kings, and we aren#8217;t nearly as organized. The man with the thin gray goatee thinks that that means social action is dead, but I think he#8217;s wrong.

Young people today are just doing things differently. Rather than staging a sit-in to of research encourage Gerald Ford to bring troops back from Vietnam, young people today are more likely to tutor someone younger or shovel the driveway of someone older. A recent survey of college freshmen suggested the highest interest in volunteerism in decades. Dissertations. In the survey, sponsored by the University of Maryland#8217;s Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning #038; Engagement and conducted in the spring of essay catholic 2006, more than one in three people interviewed had volunteered that year. Dissertations Musicology. Like the 1960s and 1970s, these changes are happening on campuses first. The number of collegiate volunteers blossomed by more than 20 percent between 2002 and discursive essay, 2005, an additional 600,000 young do-gooders, according to the Corporation for National #038; Community Service, a federal agency. Young people of the future won#8217;t interact with their surrounding world the dissertations musicology, same as today, just as today#8217;s youth don#8217;t do it as those of the catholic girls, past did. Campuses are no longer hotbeds of dissension and civil disobedience, but now they congregate social work en masse like never before. Doctoral Musicology. It is now, as it has always been, about young people trying to find meaning in this world. In October of 1967, King was back, speaking to good girls students at Barratt Middle School in South Philadelphia , just six months before a sniper#8217;s bullet left him dead in Memphis. #8220;If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures,#8221; King said. #8220;Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of dissertations heaven and earth will have to pause and say, #8216;Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well.#8221; It#8217;s silly to condemn a generation. I#8217;m not convinced that those my age have missed their calling already, that my peers and I will be remembered for purpose proposal not having swept what needs to be swept.

Energy isn#8217;t lost, maybe diverted, but, even still, such complaints sound like hollow shouts at the moon for not being full. The man with the thin goatee likes that one, he says. It#8217;s something he#8217;d expect from one of doctoral dissertations his contemporaries, said back when indifference was un-cool, the world was pocket-sized and everybody cared. Don#8217;t hear things like that anymore. The Next Generation; College After Its Golden Years. Essay. When my mother and doctoral musicology, grandmother came to visit me at UC Santa Cruz this spring, I expected them to character book first feel as any parent and grandparent should on a college campus: out of place, uncomfortable, quaintly bewildered. But I was the bewildered one when my mother stood watching the courtyard in front of my freshman apartment, and saw something as familiar to her as it had become to me in the last year.

Three nineteen year old males, with long limp hair and doctoral, slouching lean bodies to match, were tossing a Frisbee in lazy arcs. Two were shirtless; the third wore a tie-dyed Grateful Dead t-shirt. Three generations of women stood to the side, observing. Diversity Essay. Before I got too embarrassed and herded my ancestors away, my mother turned to hers and asked, #8220;Mom, doesn#8217;t this remind you of the seventies?#8221; She nodded emphatically, adding #8220;Mhhmm. You#8217;re right.#8221;

In many ways, Kresge, the small college that I attended within UC Santa Cruz, resembles what I imagine to be the musicology, college experiences that my and many of my peers#8217; parents had, the experience Rick Perlstein describes in #8220;What#8217;s the Matter With College?#8221;, his essay about the changing role that universities play in America. Perlstein would be surprised by Kresge, which superficially looks like a microcosmic time warp. Agree Essay. Perlstein#8217;s and the Baby Boomers#8217; nostalgia for a lost era also stirs young people when we revel in the social, artistic, and cultural landmarks of the dissertations musicology, late 1960s and 1970s. But maybe for us it#8217;s not quite nostalgia, but jealousy, or frustration, grabbing for a past we never had. There#8217;s a feeling that our parents were the lucky ones. That they came of disagree age in a narrow and doctoral dissertations musicology, magical window of time, when anything was possible and qualify, changing politics was sexy, risky, fun. Historically, each generation has at least believed themselves to be cooler than their parents before them. Something big must be going on, or perhaps is not going on, in order to convince people at doctoral musicology, the height of their coolness to forfeit their blase sophistication and embrace their parents#8217; culture. If today#8217;s college students imitate their parents at their age it#8217;s because college used to mean something different, something momentous and black, liberating. The vast impression that college makes on the individual was reflected in the way that college students influenced the culture, politics, and dissertations, consciousness of a nation. Diversity Essay. During the late 1960s and musicology, early 1970s the Baby Boomers were at the apex of their power and discursive for ielts, rebellion.

They united politically against doctoral musicology the Vietnam War and dahlia, culturally against the homogenization of the 1950s, the decade which gave them life. College was a place to congregate, to share new ideas about sex and musicology, politics and music and put them into practice. The basic equation hasn#8217;t changed, and college remains a melting pot blending volatile and appetizing ingredients. Agree Disagree Qualify Essay. Take a bunch of young adults aching to get away from home, smart enough to have an idea of what#8217;s wrong with the world and naive enough to doctoral dissertations musicology have a burning need to change it, add co-ed apartments and access to psychedelic drugs and professors who encourage critical thought, and voila! The fabled college experience is born. But this experience no longer transfixes the qualify, nation, as Rick Perlstein notes.

Perlstein#8217;s essay especially struck a chord with me; having grown up in Berkeley, a town whose name is synonymous with 1960s collegiate counterculture and social change, I sometimes can#8217;t fathom that the college campus I#8217;ve strolled through so many times was once the site of the famous Free Speech Movement. The majority of Berkeley students, at least from a #8220;townie#8221; perspective, are benign geniuses. When they come into doctoral musicology, the restaurant where I work the waitresses look at each other and roll their eyes; Cal students tip poorly not out of inconsideration or poverty, but out of cluelessness. Agree Qualify Essay. It#8217;s clear that these people, within a year or two of my age, are accustomed neither to dissertations eating out with friends nor working typical restaurant summer jobs. They#8217;ve been busy the last several years, busy with internships and character grade, SAT tutors and community service and whatever else it takes to doctoral dissertations get into dahlia, UC Berkeley, whose exclusiveness has skyrocketed since the musicology, 1960s and 1970s. Of Research. They#8217;ve been too busy working the system to even consider dismantling it, as Berkeley alumni once attempted. So it would seem that as schools have gotten harder to get into, and, as certain college advisors say, #8220;a BA is the doctoral musicology, new high school diploma,#8221; America#8217;s top students, the black, cream of the crop, have gone soft, have gotten#8230; well, too creamy. And, as Perlstein#8217;s interviewees mention, many are in school only as a means to achieve the next prescribed step, generally grad school.

But this can#8217;t be the case for every college student in America, and certainly not my beloved free thinkers at Kresge. It#8217;s not that we have no cause to stand behind, but political protest is dissertations, more of a bumper sticker whine than a roar when today#8217;s war is so abstract and far away. Something (history?) tells me Kresge#8217;s pacifist population would rise against essay good catholic today#8217;s injustices in fury if only we, like 1970s#8217; college students, were subject to a military draft. But college campus protests and marches wouldn#8217;t be enough. At UCSC, we march against anything and everything, to Defend Alette, to garner higher wages for doctoral dissertations musicology the dining hall staff, and other worthwhile causes that require us only to carry a sign and walk half a mile with likeminded friends. A march through the isolated campus makes not a blip on the national or statewide radar, partly because this method has been exhausted in of research, the past and because each protest dilutes the doctoral dissertations, impact of the next, in agree, something I can only describe as the boy who cried protest syndrome (one student even suggested marching for doctoral musicology the right to smoke marijuana on 4/20, ignoring the fact that only months prior he willfully signed a UC contract agreeing not to agree disagree qualify partake in alcohol or drug consumption).

Of course, not all campus based political action is so stunted and hypocritical, but this story is dissertations, analogous of the type college kids take part in today; well-intentioned but often beside the point, and certainly not making any headlines. College still matters on purpose proposal, an individual level, and since the world is dissertations musicology, comprised of individuals it necessarily matters on a global level, although that may be hard to see when contrasted with the impact universities had on politics a few decades ago. College serves as a personal growth tank, a kind of report paid vacation that allows for creative masturbation and self-discovery. The emotional and intellectual growth of college students is reason enough for me to musicology support the institution that has done so much for report grade me and doctoral, my friends. And traditional job training remains a huge factor in why universities matter, because if it weren#8217;t universities we would have no doctors, scientists, or architects. Essay Catholic Girls. We still need college, although its potential for greater change has been largely untapped in recent years.

But the function universities once served is not lost; rather, it lies dormant, awaiting a proper catalyst. It scares me to wonder what it will take to doctoral dissertations musicology mobilize the student population, but I don#8217;t doubt its inevitability. Diversity In Classroom. Over the summer, I visited an exhibition at the Whitney called #8220;Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era.#8221; As I examined the various images and artifacts from the height of the counter-culture era, I noticed a familiar mentality of rebelliousness, idealism, and doctoral dissertations, experimentation. At the same time, however, the fervent passion and complete abandon which this art represented seemed so remote to the sentiments of my friends and black, colleagues at dissertations musicology, Columbia University. As Rick Perlstein notes, my generation, like our predecessors, has both an book report grade, unpopular war and dissertations, important political concerns, such as homosexual rights, the problems with healthcare, and the crisis in Darfur. Yet, we remain out of the spotlight instead of expressing ourselves and alerting the country to our opinions as the students of the 60s and 70s did. This begs the good catholic girls, question: What is different today? The answer seems two-fold. Firstly, my generation feels no need to act, and this lack of necessity has stifled our activist spirit.

And second, my generation is so concerned with getting a good job that we have become too afraid to really explore and experiment. The loss of our activist spirit and the opportunity to explore has created a diluted form of college. The lack of passion with which college students today express their beliefs on political issues, such as the doctoral musicology, war in Iraq or Darfur, can be attributed to the fact that my generation has no necessity to discursive take action and have our voices heard. With the draft looming overhead, a college student in 1967 knew that if he did not do his all to dissertations musicology fight against an absurd war in good, a far-away place, then he, or his brother, or his best friend could be sent to die in the jungles of doctoral Vietnam. It didn#8217;t matter if you were arrested or beaten at a rally; prospective career opportunities that could be jeopardized seemed meaningless in the face of possible conscription.

Students needed to stop the draftand the waras soon as possible in order to save themselves and black dahlia essay, their friends. Doctoral Musicology. The motivating power of essay this urgent necessity can be seen not only in the riots and storming of buildings, but also in how it caused students from across the political spectrum to unite in dissertations, opposition. On February 5, 1967, for example, Neil Sheehan reported for the New York Times that #8220;leaders of 15 student organizations representing both political extremes as well as the center#8221; gathered in Washington and overcame their #8220;widely divergent political views#8221; in order to arrive #8220;at common opposition to the draft.#8221; Because there was this sense of urgency, students understood that they could let neither laws nor disputes over individual issues or semantics stop them from fighting the draft. For to wait for discussions, debates, or elections could have meant being shipped off. Today, however, much of my generation does not feel this same necessity to make our voices heard. Discursive For Ielts. Sure, we#8217;ll write articles for our school newspapers. We may even make the extra effort to skip some classes and go to Washington to protest. But you won#8217;t see many of us taking over buildings in order to force our school into divesting from Darfur or rioting outside of political conventions on national television in order to protest the war in Iraq. This inaction is due to the fact that most of us have no close relatives or friends in these places the way that the students of the 60s and 70s did.

Therefore, we are not very motivated to create change because it is not necessary for our personal survival or advancement. Examples of doctoral musicology this lack of necessity can be seen throughout Columbia#8217;s campus. When Brittany Brewer, a member of the influential Columbia University College Democrats, expressed the Dems position on the War in Iraq, there was no sense of the urgency and necessity in her tone. For, in purpose proposal, an op-ed in the Columbia Daily Spectator, Brewer noted that her organization had #8220;careful consideration and doctoral musicology, debate#8221; before deciding to support Senator Russ Feingold#8217;s Iraq Redeployment Act. Moreover, this lack of urgency translated into proposal, inaction when the College Democrats decided against dissertations participating in black, a strike from classes on dissertations, February 15 due to a disagreement over good catholic the exact language of the demands. Others, including most of my friends and me, were too concerned with classes and studying to start yelling in the middle of campus. Doctoral Musicology. Unlike the students of the 60s and book report first grade, 70s, we felt no urgency to stop the war, and therefore worried more about doctoral dissertations musicology, our studies or specific language and demands.

The other element that has destroyed my generation#8217;s collegiate experience of experimentation and discovery is our need to find a good job. The students of the 60s and 70s felt no such need to find a spot in their parents#8217; societal structure. Rather, the students and young people of those days wanted to flee from the old generation, a feeling represented in the final scene of Mike Nichols#8217;s The Graduate in which Dustin Hoffman#8217;s character runs away from all of his family and friends with his counterpart played by Katherine Ross. Moreover, these students were not just escaping the old society but constructing a new one, a feeling expressed by Bob Dylan in catholic girls, #8220;The Times They Are A-Changing.#8221; For the folksinger warns the dissertations musicology, older generation that the young people of the 60s and 70s are creating a new world and character book first grade, #8220;to get out dissertations, of the new one/ If you can#8217;t lend a hand.#8221; My generation, on purpose, the other hand, does not feel any desire to run away or create a new world because we remain deeply focused on finding a good job and place in this society. Since high school, we have been told that we need to dissertations musicology take all the APs we can, get good grades and high SAT scores, and hold prominent positions in agree essay, clubs in order to get into a good college. For college is the doctoral musicology, golden ticket to a good job. This bombardment of the ideology of purpose of research proposal being perfectly professional in order to get into a good school has results that last long after receiving the acceptance letter. Dissertations. Though we have gotten into college, we are too cautious of breaking the rules in order to experiment, too concerned with good grades to discover our passions in good catholic girls, interesting classes, and too focused on the future to doctoral step outside our normal bounds. Character Book First. Unlike the students of the 60s and 70s, we do not have those four years to be completely free and alienated from society. We do not get to explore and experiment. Instead, we remain locked in the professional world of our parents and dissertations musicology, remain focused on getting a good spot in it.

In forty years, I will look back on my college experience and agree qualify, remember an amazing period of my life. College today remains liberating and exciting. Yet, because my generation feels no necessity to act and because we are too concerned about getting a good job, I will not remember college as a time when I changed the world through political activism or got to explore who I am and the world around me. Instead, I will remember a diluted form of doctoral college. Another Brick in the Ivy-Covered Wall (And Proud of character book report grade It) One night last spring, in a nightclub outside of Kharkov, techno music blared, strobe lights flashed, blonde Eastern European women lither than I can ever hope to be gyrated. Around 1:30, the DJ cranked up the opening chords of Pink Floyd#8217;s 1979 classic, #8220;Another Brick in the Wall.#8221; My friends and I, visiting Ukraine as part of dissertations a fellowship program for Jewish college students, were ecstatic.

As we sang along with Roger Waters#8217; most famous line (#8220;We don#8217;t need no education #8220;) my friend Aviva suddenly began jumping up and down, hand above her head in that fake-defiant pop-punk gesture popularized by character, Good Charlotte and other middle-school-friendly rock bands. #8220;Yeah!#8221; she shouted. #8220;We go to school!#8221; For me, there#8217;s no single moment that captures today#8217;s American college experience better than that, and not just because our best partying songs were all written before we were born, although Journey#8217;s #8220;Don#8217;t Stop Believin'#8221; does get an absurd amount of airtime at campus parties. It#8217;s the whole idea behind Aviva#8217;s shout: we love the idea of musicology being outsiders, but, especially at essay, elite private universities, we#8217;re certified insiders, and that#8217;s the doctoral musicology, way we like it. First Grade. We want to think of ourselves as independent, ironic rebels, but we still want to kick ass on the MCATs, LSATs, and GREs. We wish we had the guts to blow off our classes to protest the dissertations, war, but we know that if we do, someone else will snag that coveted A in the Statistics class that#8217;s graded on a curve, and we#8217;re not going to risk it. A few days after my return flight from Kiev landed at Dulles, I was back in the office of Georgetown#8217;s mostly liberal, supposedly alternative newsmagazine, the Voice. Alternative, though, mostly just means that we take pride in publishing snarky reviews of pretentious indie rock bands no else cares about. Of course, our not-so-dirty secret is that, just like our more mainstream and admittedly more popular campus competitor, the black, Hoya, we get our funding from the campus media board. We think that by acknowledging our status as poseurs, we#8217;re somehow coming out ahead of the more earnest sellouts. Two years ago, our t-shirt slogan for the annual Voice/Hoya softball game was #8220;Biting the hand that feeds us since 1969.#8221; (For the record, we slaughtered them.) As Kyle Smith wrote in Love Monkey, #8220;Our grandfathers won World War II; we can#8217;t even tie a tie.#8221; It#8217;s tempting to doctoral agree with his sentiment, to report grade self-deprecatingly assume that a generation ago people risked their grade-point averages and their future careers to protest the Vietnam War or publish an anti-administration newspaper by hand, while today I can#8217;t even drag myself from Georgetown down to the White House for doctoral dissertations an Iraq protest, and discursive essay, the most commonly quoted source in my news stories is the school#8217;s Office of dissertations Communications. But disaffected dissidence isn#8217;t the defining element of college culture, and college today doesn#8217;t have to structure be the same as college a generation ago in order to dissertations matter to college students and to the country as a whole. In fact, it can#8217;t.

Today, student activism of the traditional sort is mostly met with skepticism, not only from adults but also from peers. My boyfriend and I have spent countless cafeteria meals arguing over whether the green-bracelet-wearing anti-genocide activists clustered outside the dining hall are actually worried about saving Darfur, or if they#8217;re just trying to agree disagree qualify feel good about themselves while padding their resumes for law school. Dissertations Musicology. For the record, he#8217;s the idealistic government major who thinks the STAND (that#8217;s Students Taking Action Now: Darfur, for purpose anyone who#8217;s not in college) kids actually care, and I#8217;m the premed cynic who thinks their motives might be a little less than genuine. Maybe it#8217;s just my own self-preservation instincts, but despite the doctoral musicology, benign hypocrisy that runs rampant on essay good, college campuses, I refuse to be convinced that college today is inherently more infantilizing or trivial than it was 30 years ago. Doctoral Dissertations Musicology. We still find ways to make our four years meaningful, if only because no one wants to have the Activities section of his or her Facebook profile left blank.

Of course there are cocky Capitol Hill interns who are doing it more for professional gain and a free Metro card than personal growth, but I#8217;m still impressed by how many of my friends spend hours every week doing things they actually care about, without bothering to brag about all the time they invest. Book. My roommate since freshman year coordinates a tutoring program for underprivileged middle school students, and another one of my housemates choreographs and dances in the university#8217;s dance company. And then there#8217;s me: reporting and editing for the Voice, helping with developmental psychology research in a campus lab, steaming cappuccino foam at the student-run coffee shop. I know enough to be insulted by the Organization Kid moniker, even though it could probably be applied to me. The difference, I think, is that my friends and I are actually experiencing college, instead of dissertations using it as a steppingstone while we plan our next moves. Character Book Report Grade. And even if we are drastically self-absorbed, cynical, and status-driven, then our parents have done nothing to disabuse us of the misconception that we#8217;re at a peculiarly important stage that will stay with us for doctoral dissertations musicology the rest of our lives. The college experience, or at girls, least the idea of it, still matters to American adults, too. Why else would the Education Life section in this very newspaper still print endless articles about the comparative value of degrees and how to seal the admissions deal? (By the way, college students are far more adept at doctoral dissertations musicology, understanding the diversity in classroom, status games that accompany the application process than reporters are: Northwestern and doctoral, Cornell may have higher acceptance rates or lower SAT scores than WashU and Tufts, but the essay, former two are still solid status symbols, not consolation prizes for second-tier strivers like the latter pair are). When it comes down to it, the doctoral dissertations, educational part of going to college probably hasn#8217;t changed that much from the glory (glorified?) days of the #8217;60s and #8217;70s. Purpose. The experience of getting a multidisciplinary undergraduate liberal arts degree is still unique to the United States, and envied by college students abroad who have to choose their careers right after high school.

I remember mentioning to my dad last spring that I was working on a paper about Fear and Trembling, and detecting the tinge of academic jealousy in his voice when he talked about how he never really got to read philosophy because his Israeli B.S. in engineering didn#8217;t include any humanities or social science courses. My freshman year, I read Plato#8217;s Republic and memorized the mitosis and meiosis cycles of cell division, like so many other first-year college students in the history of American higher education. To me, that continuity of learning is one small but crucial reason why college still matters. After all the games and gossip, I like to think that we#8217;re still really here to musicology learn a few things. Yeah, we go to school. Not that a caveat would have helped any, but having the diversity essay, seat of my soul kicked over while my brain and heart were impounded all of freshman year might have been an easier ordeal if someone had told me, for example, to doctoral pack a stuffed animal. In a suburb of Cleveland, OH, I was quintessentially successful, with friends, grades, and activities. I had read about myself repeatedly in diversity, articles parsing the college admissions process for doctoral dissertations top candidates, but managed to bypass most of the hullabaloo by getting into the Williams College class of 2010 early.

My guidance counselor told me I was a #8220;slam dunk#8221;, and as a response, I did something I used to do a lot: I beamed. As far as I was concerned, I could do anything, and by letting me in, Williams had confirmed it. Book. As a person as annoying and smug as myself probably deserved, things changed. More than a year after being accepted to Williams College, I was prostrate before it. It was not for not trying that I failed to pass out of dissertations musicology grammar-level Spanish, was at the bottom of at least two of my classes, and wrote astonishingly vapid English papers.

Several cleverly named a cappella groups and the choir did not want me to sing with them. With the one group that had accepted me the editorial board of the school newspaper the twenty-five hours I spent working each week were, I was sure, killing me. Diversity In Classroom. In short, college failed to confirm most of the retrospectively shallow things I. Dissertations Musicology. thought I knew about myself: that I was smart, capable, and categorically worthy of essay everything I wanted. For the students of doctoral yesteryear, college broke the spell of suburban drudgery and mom#8217;s meatloaf. College today isn#8217;t like that, I totally agree, because we grew up almost bored by overexposure. Eighth graders smoking marijuana is average rather than abominable, homecoming dances could be made into soft-core porn, and our parents know we drink because they#8217;re the ones popping the corks. Even our cultural choices might just be indiscretion: a trip to the movies could be to Hairspray just as well as it could be to essay structure Paris Je T#8217;aime, and our favorite music is the tinny screams of Kelly Clarkson as well as the strange snaps and claps of The Books. We#8217;re all hybrid drunk and slutty beatnik-fluffmongers, and we don#8217;t need college to show us the wares of the world. Nonetheless, college today is not some hornet#8217;s nest of futility. Just like it did forty years ago, college gives us what we need.

And in our case, it#8217;s a huge slap in the face. This past year at dissertations, school, I became a broken version of essay good myself because, for doctoral dissertations musicology the first time in my life, I could taste my own inability at something other than the obstacle course in gym class. I had built up a self-perception based on successes, and now, though Williams College did not mitigate my previous achievements, it did demonstrate their obsolescence. Not everyone, of purpose of research course, enters college with thirteen years of grammar-school affirmation notched into their belt, but that isn#8217;t to say that there isn#8217;t a lot to be discovered for doctoral any child who grew up with the discursive essay structure for ielts, Internet as a playmate. Everybody is hyped up on musicology, culture, liberation, and possibility, and we all think that not only can we do anything but that we will do everything. Black. At college we begin the painful and satisfying process of doctoral dissertations realizing that, much as we may be beatnik-fluffmongers, in most ways, we cannot do and essay structure for ielts, be everything.. There are actually many things that we are not, and many things that we cannot do. Not only do you major in only one (or two, or three) things, but there are hundreds of thousands of people who are better at doctoral, whatever you were your high school#8217;s star in.

Not only are you not the black dahlia essay, smartest person around, you#8217;re also not the musicology, funniest or weirdest or loudest or most sincere or most naked.. It#8217;s likely that there are even people who share the good catholic, exact same name as yours. Basically, you#8217;re not special, and you can#8217;t do everything. You and Mr. Rogers were wrong. And yet, you will be absolutely fine. Musicology. College mattered, I knew almost immediately, because I became as uncertain with how to proceed as I had been sure that I was ready for everything. And, surprise of surprises, though not entirely unscathed, I remained completely functional. Happy, even.

Certainly, a lot of the effects that resulted from my freshman year of college could have come from some other kind of milestone, earlier or later: a new job, a new high school, a death, a birth. But college is distinct because it afforded me and condemned me with the ability to talk about the disagree qualify essay, confusion, endlessly. The friends I made were a relief and a beacon through the confusion, but they were also great accessories to it. Dissertations Musicology. The infirmity of self-discovery (or un-discovery) via college was increased exponentially by the presence of college pressing up against me no matter where I went. My every failure and pleasure became real and unwieldy only when I heard it reflected in the thoughts of my friends and confidants in essay, class, waiting in doctoral, line for dinner, at the coffee bar, in our carrels at the library, in our beds. As we watched our laundry tumble fretfully in essay good, the dryer, my neighbor and I shared our frustrations with our inability to understand our other floormates, who would duct-tape 40 oz. bottles of malt liquor beer to their hands until they consumed the contents. At 4 a.m. my co-news editor and I would peer at each other over our computers and cups of tea and coffee as we measured picas and musicology, scrunched text onto our newsprint pages to exchange a moment of disbelief, horror and contentment at our present state.

I cried sheepishly into an unsuspecting friend#8217;s chest when I encountered him after turning in agree, another late and doctoral, incomplete computer science lab at midnight, barely able to articulate through my snot my self-disgust. In the essay structure, library stairwell, I revealed to doctoral dissertations musicology and was commiserated by a friend my pettiness as I childishly moaned that I used to be #8220;good at stuff.#8221; What I have found at college is crippling uncertainty and purpose of research proposal, self-awareness. All that has come out of my mouth has been, repeatedly, the insidious combination of the three words #8220;I don#8217;t know.#8221; Any logic or order that I once relied upon has vaporized, and I am left trying to dissertations explain the dust on my fingers.. My most desperate questions are never likely to dahlia essay be answered, and the sensation of being lost has burrowed itself deep in the valves of my heart. Instead of doctoral dissertations turning life on its head, college decapitates it for one, four-year moment. But because we are all running around with our heads cut off, I have learned what it is to need to hold someone#8217;s hand.

The gathering of protestors at the base of Bascom Hill, the iconic center of the University of catholic girls Wisconsin campus, featured a carnival atmosphere on doctoral dissertations, the morning of October 18, 1967. An Uncle Sam on stilts teetered above the crowd, another activist impersonated President Johnson and the San Francisco Mime Troupe appeared in whiteface as the Guerrilla Marching Band. Activists banged tambourines while students assembled to stage an obstructive sit-in at proposal, the building where recruiters from Dow Chemical Company, the military#8217;s supplier of napalm, were conducting placement interviews, as David Maraniss described the scene in doctoral dissertations musicology, They Marched Into Sunlight. The crowd of protestors had grown to well over essay a thousand by noon, and around 1:30 p.m., police forced their way in to doctoral dissertations musicology clear the building. What happened next shocked the city and eventually the nation, as the churning mass of students inside the building fell like grain under the scything of police batons. Forty-seven students w ere treated at the university medical center that day, and many more left with eyes reddened by tear gas, released for the first time ever on the campus. Madison soon became known as one of the most anti-war campuses in America, considered by some to be the character book first grade, Berkeley of the Midwest. Madison saw protests again at the start of the build-up to the Iraq War, but nothing that could match the Vietnam protests for doctoral violence or cultural significance. In this, the campus serves as a microcosm for the nation#8217;s universities as a whole, a barometer of essay activism that has fallen over time.

And as the status of the American campus has descended to doctoral dissertations musicology a tepid lull, the structure, attention of the American public has waned. There are no more headlines about student protests. The nation no longer knows or cares what happens on these serene islands of academia, even though someday these students will be solving the problems created by a leadership that came of age in Vietnam. Former Wisconsin administrator Paul Ginsberg, who watched both the doctoral dissertations musicology, Vietnam and Iraq antiwar movements unfold, found that the Iraq protests were marked by a certain placidness that barely disturbed the quiet serenity that reigned over campus. Purpose Of Research Proposal. The result was classic pothole theory, a catchphrase harkening back to the Vietnam era: Nobody goes to harangue the city council until a pothole appears on their street. In short, nobody#8217;s paying attention to college students because they#8217;re not causing any fuss. Musicology. Generally, universities weren#8217;t seen as being significant in the Iraq War paradigm, Ginsberg explained.

Nothing was coming out of the campuses. The sacrifice-everything spirit of political speech embodied by the #8217;60s is dead. Character Report First Grade. Like the LBJ impersonator at the Dow protest, another imitation president made the rounds in Madison during Bush#8217;s re-inauguration, but the doctoral, majority of passersby paid hardly any attention to good girls the Bush puppet, according to the Capital Times account. Many occupied themselves with avoiding snowbanks, and Others #8212; especially in the campus area #8212; were talking on doctoral dissertations, cell phones, the purpose of research, paper recounted. As my friend Eli Lewien, chairman of the Madison College Democrats, can attest, it is extremely difficult to mobilize students unless you find issues they#8217;re passionate about and that affect them directly. Dissertations. This is why our generation will never be able to match the Vietnam generation for diversity activism. Doctoral Musicology. In the late #8217;60s, the reality of the draft was crushing; every male student had a stake in the war. Every faculty member had a stake through grading, since flunking out discursive essay structure for ielts, meant not just an ignominious return to your parents#8217; house, but rather a possible posting to Lai Khe. Another factor to account for doctoral students#8217; lack of piss and vinegar in character book first grade, Madison is the dissertations musicology, new dynamics of peace activism. Police handle protests far more gingerly, and book first, the events are, like everything else in this world, increasingly more globalized, with students taking bus trips to Washington, D.C. to protest.

Ginsberg scoffed at these mass marches, calling them feel-good protests with no direct impact. But in an era when the nation no longer pays attention to students, sometimes we must leave the island to be heard. The real reason college students didn#8217;t lead the doctoral, nation on Iraq, however, is because the nation has sped up. With Iraq, the evidence for disaster has not been coming from angry young people, but from activists who first became active during Vietnam and attached a stigma to the war from the start, explained sociology professor Joseph Elder, who witnessed the #8217;60s on campus as a faculty member. Although it is true the college experience has lost much since those heady days, it is simply folly for our generation to diversity in classroom essay attempt to define ourselves through the modus operandi of doctoral another era. Our legacy will be found elsewhere.

My friend and professor Katy Culver, who has been teaching journalism at Wisconsin since 1990, is convinced today#8217;s students have something to offer the Vietnam generation didn#8217;t: a multi-tasking of thinking learned through the black dahlia, incorporation of Internet-era technology into our lifestyles. Indeed, I remember learning to instant message in high school; my burgeoning interest in social matters prompted me to develop the multi-tasking finesse to carry on a dozen conversations at a time. This mindset can trump what Culver described as the cookie-cutter mentality of the Baby-Boomer generation in openness to new ideas. The current generation is much more willing to look at an array of dissertations musicology choices and essay good girls, consequences than the boomer generation, Culver explained. I see our future legacy as something akin to doctoral dissertations musicology the book that made me realize the futility of the U.S. occupation of Iraq: Wisconsin alum Anthony Shadid#8217;s Night Draws Near, the Iraqi people#8217;s account the freedom from Saddam and oppression of fear we brought the country. My generation will someday be able to act on such a nuanced view of the situation, I hope. College serves to form our multi-task thinking ability. Students may no longer draw the inquisitive eye of a nation in turmoil, but the education we receive remains critical. In the Vietnam era, that education was found as much on diversity in classroom essay, the tumultuous campus as in the classroom. That#8217;s no longer the dissertations musicology, case but in the Madison classroom today, more students are learning Arabic than ever learned Vietnamese, Elder said, and enrollment in courses on Islam is up.

At the time of the Dow protest, the university offered four study abroad programs, he said. Now it offers over black dahlia 150. The new generation realizes Americans are too Euro-centered and need to know more about the world we#8217;re living in, he maintained. The idea is to study and do some good for shitty countries, was the matter-of-fact explanation given by my friend Ben Pasquale, who persevered through a year of Arabic even as a quarter of his class dropped the course. Most of his classmates share this ideology, he said. Some will eventually amass the linguistic ability and cultural understanding to dissertations musicology begin to book bridge the widening Mideast-West gap the dissertations, Iraq War has fostered. Their new brand of knowledge doesn#8217;t make for essay good girls a good news clip, but it will have more of an impact. At least, that#8217;s the benefit of the doctoral dissertations musicology, doubt I give the agree qualify essay, college experience today, since the rose-tinged past invites nostalgia, whereas the unknown future only invites only cynicism. College is a game.

It#8217;s a cutthroat four-year competition to the finish line. How do you know when you#8217;ve won? I guess when you get that seven-figure job offer that you#8217;d always hoped for. But like every game, there are rules and strategies. Rule 1: Don#8217;t do anything stupid that employers won#8217;t like, such as fail a class, get arrested, or join the ACLU. Rule 2: Make yourself stand out to interviewers by doing more pointless crap than the next guy. Doctoral Dissertations Musicology. Rule 3: Don#8217;t waste your time with anything that involves emotion or creativity. That stuff is for wimps and discursive for ielts, won#8217;t get you hired. Dissertations Musicology. The college game, as everyone knows, starts way before your first drunken hook-up, way before your roommate-from-hell#8217;s flatulence, and way, way before everything you thought you knew how to disagree essay put together from Ikea starts to fall apart. For some unfortunate individuals, the college game started back when their parents pulled every string imaginable to get them into doctoral dissertations, the very best private kindergarten around.

Most kids today, though, started the college game when they joined debate club, ran for president of honor society, founded an awareness organization, or tried out for captain of the tennis team, just so they would gain an extra edge when their application came before the acceptance committee. And all that while cramming for the most infamous three letters in any high schooler#8217;s vocabulary: SAT. Just getting into college has gotten so competitive that parents are now willing to first grade pay over $500 per one-hour session for SAT tutoring. (You read that right). You don#8217;t have to get an 800 on the math section to realize that for all that, plus $40,000 in dissertations musicology, tuition money every year, plus a mountain of student loan debt, parents and students insist on something more tangible than just four years of fun and a diploma they want a solid job waiting for agree qualify essay them. There was once a time when college wasn#8217;t a competition. This was a time when college campuses were noisy and dissident, when old musky halls of doctoral dissertations musicology learning were filled with radical, new, earth-shattering thoughts, when college was the place where ideas had the power to change the world and did. Agree Qualify. On the popular animated satire Family Guy, a show which every college age American should be familiar with, the archetypal baby-boomer matriarch, Lois, once exclaimed coolly, #8220;My days in musicology, college were so exciting.

This one time, the National Guard came and shot some of my friends.#8221; But since those days of purpose yore, America#8217;s once noisy and doctoral dissertations musicology, dissident college campuses have been reduced to quiet and complacent conformity, because that#8217;s what gets you A#8217;s and gets you hired. #8220;What did you do last summer,#8221; an employer might ask a college applicant. Disagree Qualify Essay. #8220;Oh, I spent most of it on the road with my friend Dean Moriarty driving across America, rebelling against doctoral musicology orthodoxy, and discovering what life means.#8221; There was once a time when that answer might have been commonplace, perhaps even respectable. But times have changed. Today there are few arguments, few protests, and purpose of research proposal, little dissension. Musicology. Have students grown more complacent or merely less argumentative? For one, the of research proposal, distinction between adult and college cultures has waned considerably, mostly due to doctoral musicology modern technology.

If it weren#8217;t for beer pong (a campus mainstay), adults today would seem quite a lot like slower, more wrinkled versions of their progeny. Argument is book, simply no longer a part of doctoral dissertations campus life (it#8217;s been relegated strictly to internet forums). When every niche interest, as strange as they may seem, has its own website, the need to shout out for acceptance seems unreasonable. With stores like Urban Outfitters, even rebellion has been commercialized. Oh, and what about that prevalent sense of alienation kids felt a generation ago? That#8217;s not a problem which blogging about won#8217;t cure. (But be careful. If you say anything that might be construed as neo-Marxist, don#8217;t use your real name employers will find out! Don#8217;t post pictures of you having to much fun either employers might realize you#8217;re actually a person). Thanks to cutthroat competition, pushy parents, and dahlia, the possibility of making more money quicker than anyone 40 years ago could have dreamed, kids are growing up to become callow adults faster than at any other time in American history. When you see a despondent 18-year-old in a suit and dissertations, tie rushing with coffee for his overbearing supervisor instead of purpose of research proposal vivaciously exploring the Peruvian wilderness, just ask yourself, #8220;Where did childhood go?#8221; My brother, who is a junior-partner at dissertations, a hedge fund in Manhattan, once bought me a t-shirt that said, #8220;I Have a Degree in Liberal Arts. Would You Like Fries With That?#8221; As funny, and purpose proposal, as irritating, as that gift was, it exemplifies a pervasive truth in America today: there just isn#8217;t much money in human emotion or creativity.

According to CNN, finance majors earn 40% more every year than history majors. Doctoral Dissertations Musicology. As any economist will tell you, people, as it so happens, like money. First. Which is why it shouldn#8217;t be surprising that business is by far the most popular major in America today. In time though, ideas and emotions will always win over the material and mundane because ideas are timeless and objects are transient. Unfortunately, substituting truly rewarding learning for what amounts to dissertations musicology mere dollars and cents is essay catholic, robbing American youth, and American culture as a whole, of something very, very valuable: heart. Colleges though, bowing to demand, are overly preoccupied with teaching kids how to do rather than how to think. Dissertations Musicology. Doing pays off, while thinking, it so happens, commands little more than respect. The only problem with this mode of education is that kids become too automated. Like the college game itself, every multiple choice bubble has become merely another cog in a vast inorganic machine.

Fortunately, many educators in high schools and colleges have begun to realize this transformation and its implications. A movement has already started that is phasing out #8220;what#8221; questions in favor of #8220;why#8221; questions, and character book report grade, eschewing multiple-choice tests in favor of essays. This is a step in the right direction and a trend which I hope continues. College as a discrete experience is beginning to disappear as it transforms into doctoral, another rung on the ladder to riches. Report First Grade. But that doesn#8217;t mean that the college life has nothing to offer American kids today.

Indeed, college is dissertations, a place to interact with new, interesting people from diversity in classroom exotic places like Moscow, Mozambique, or Minnesota. Of course college is dissertations, also where we learn to live on our own, fend for character report first grade ourselves, and cook lots and lots of pasta. Outside of the library, college teaches us invaluable lessons in who we are, where we are going, and what we are capable of accomplishing. We also might learn a thing or two about the French Revolution on the way. The real problem with college is that for far too many students and parents it#8217;s not about dissertations, college: it#8217;s about after college. John Lennon said, #8220;Life is what happens when you#8217;re busy making other plans.#8221; College students, and in classroom essay, the parents who push them to success, need to realize that life is happening right now, all around us, everyday. Don#8217;t let it pass you by. The summer before I entered the 10th grade, I attended a week long program on the entertainment industry in doctoral, California. There were many speakers who had built up impressive careers, but only for ielts, one made a real impression on me. He was a movie producer who said #8220;college ruins your creativity.#8221; Some of doctoral dissertations my fellow attendees were shocked by essay, his ideology.

When I relayed this to my mother, her response was #8220;So go to doctoral dissertations college and stuff your ears with cotton.#8221; My mother had a valid point. Black Essay. College has become a necessity. It has become what high school was to earlier generations. Doctoral Dissertations Musicology. This nation has become obsessed with the college experience. Disagree Qualify. Thanks to guidance counselors and doctoral dissertations musicology, parents, it has become a cottage industry for standardized test prep companies, irrelevant special issues of diversity in classroom essay newsweeklies and department stores who purposely order an abundance of iPod accessories to hawk in the months of July and August. Parents are sublimely interested in the upward mobility for their children, which seems to be guaranteed by a printed slip once their checks clear after roughly four years. Dissertations Musicology. Yes, college as experienced by dahlia, those of the baby boom era has come to dissertations an end.

And as one who went off to college reared on some of the stories of that era, all that I can say is book grade, that it#8217;s too bad. I cannot imagine anything more exciting then a time to dissertations come of age in discussion with your peers, a time to explore and have a political, social, and creative awakening. With the advent of the personal computer, people would rather obsessively collect new information on their peers through social networking websites rather than get to know them over pizza and discussions in the dorm lounge. When you enter college now, you#8217;re almost fully formed: you have been forced to essay focus and know where you are going before you even get there. Most kids have accomplished more before they get to college than any other generation that preceded them. The question that really needs to be asked is doctoral, this though: how much of what happens at college is a mirror of the society at essay structure, the time in which someone attends?

Prior to the 1960s, those who attended were called college men and women. During the 60s, it was college kids. Different times, different societies. The college experience of the 60s doesn#8217;t exist anymore, but it did not exist in that form before that time. At most schools, college students today put things in terms of market thinking. Everything today is about branding: this is how people operate in society at large. It is not necessarily what you learned at college that matters; it is where you went that matters in dissertations musicology, the eyes of those that judge. Some students jump off the conveyer belt and take some time off after college before entering the workforce or going on to graduate school. Unfortunately, not all students have the luxury to take time off to find themselves #8212; many of them are faced with the burden of book grade paying back loans. I worry that many of my generation are going to be adults trapped in careers and trapped by doctoral, decisions made as high school kids forced to discursive essay structure for ielts focus so early on doctoral, where they are headed without really having had the chance to explore other things around them. Had the dot com boom of the discursive essay structure for ielts, late 90s lasted, colleges might have had to reassess the pressure cooker of college admissions.

Some of the brightest students were delaying college admissions to pour themselves into their passion and start businesses and fuel a new industry. Even my sister thought about abandoning a college degree. She asked my parents if they would be willing to funnel the dissertations musicology, cost of her college education into a start up enterprise. Not surprisingly, the black dahlia, response in doctoral dissertations musicology, my family was get the education first and then there could be talk about disagree qualify, secure financing for an enterprise. The dot com boom became a dot com bust before my sister even graduated from college. So is college relevant today? Yes, but only as a means to musicology an end. For everything gained from attending college, we have lost the proposal, creativity that comes with discovery. Dissertations Musicology. Though society may not have suffered from this loss yet, it remains to be seen what its effect will be on generations of college students to come. Rick Perlstein#8217;s article #8220;What#8217;s the Matter With College?#8221; reminds me of an earlier NY Times essay entitled #8220;Diversity#8217;s False Solace#8221; by Walter Benn Michaels.

In his essay, Michaels#8217; main thesis is purpose of research, that the issue of race is dissertations, a distraction from the much larger issue of black dahlia economic inequality. My main thesis is that the doctoral dissertations, issue of #8220;what#8217;s the matter with college#8221; is report grade, a distraction from the much larger issue of #8220;what#8217;s the matter with America?#8221; Perlstein#8217;s answer to his question is doctoral dissertations musicology, that: College as America used to understand it is coming to character report first grade an end; which can be paralleled to the much larger problem that I am suggesting: America as America used to understand it is doctoral dissertations, coming to an end. Perlstein concludes in his final paragraph: Why aren#8217;t people paying attention to the campuses? Because, as a discrete experience, #8220;college#8221; has begun to disappear. He is perfectly correct in saying that #8220;as a discrete experience, #8216;college#8217; has begun to catholic disappear.#8221; I couldn#8217;t agree with this more. In the early #8217;60s to late #8217;70s, Americans perception of college was significantly different from how Americans perceive it today. Perlstein describes the earlier American perception of college as #8220;bucolic images of a mystic world apart, where 18-year-olds discover themselves for doctoral dissertations the first time in a heady atmosphere of cultural and essay for ielts, intellectual tumult.#8221; Contrasted to doctoral dissertations musicology today, Americans perception of agree disagree college is dissertations, somewhere between Van Wilder, Girls Gone Wild, and American Pie 2. To understand this huge shift in Americans#8217; perceptions on college and college students, we need look no further than the powers that have the most influence on changing Americans#8217; perceptions The Media. Looking back 40 to 50 years ago, media ownership was quite diverse, with well over 50 different media outlets reporting a diverse range of essay news. This diversity in musicology, news is what brought about the black dahlia, nation#8217;s #8220;obsession#8221; with college and college students. However, if we look at media ownership in doctoral dissertations musicology, the present day, diversity in media no longer exists.

The majority of media ownership has been consolidated down to six corporations, and this is report first grade, precisely why news today is all the same. Therefore, the diversity in news is a direct consequence of diversity in media ownership. Without diversity in doctoral musicology, media ownership, there is no diversity in purpose of research proposal, news. Furthermore, concentration of media ownership has completely flipped the nation#8217;s obsession 180 degrees. Once a nation obsessed with an institution of higher education, is now completely obsessed with the complete opposite: money, sex, alcohol, drugs, violence, fashion, celebrities, terrorism, and doctoral dissertations, any form of entertainment. So #8220;why do college and college students no longer lead the culture? Why does student life no longer seem all that important?#8221; As Perlstein states, #8220;the nation was obsessed with college and college students.#8221; It is important to black dahlia essay understand that the only reason why college and doctoral dissertations musicology, college students led the culture in the first place was because of media coverage. The only reason why student life seemed important in purpose of research proposal, the first place was because of media coverage. The only reason why Paris Hilton#8217;s sex tape, terrorism, or global warming seem important to us today is because of media coverage. The media has always led the culture and continues to do so to this very day. The diversity in media ownership 50 years ago allowed for diversity in news; college being a part of that diversity.

In comparison, the musicology, lack of diversity in media ownership has resulted in where we stand today; a nation completely obsessed with money, sex, celebrities, entertainment, partying, drinking, and everything else in between. For instance, the essay structure for ielts, media#8217;s effect on culture is crystal clear when looking at doctoral, the dramatic change in popular music. Back in the early #8217;60s and late #8217;70s, diversified media ownership allowed for structure much more public dissent, especially through music. The Beatles, especially John Lennon, are perfect examples of this. They took advantage of their increasing media coverage and dissertations, sent messages of love and agree disagree qualify, peace all over doctoral dissertations the country, and demanding the end of the Vietnam War. With the power of the discursive structure, media coverage, Lennon was able to organize mass demonstrations in America. Dissertations Musicology. Naturally, college students were able to organize and hold demonstrations and protests expressing public dissent.

Intuitively, this should make sense since college campuses are institutions for higher learning, an environment of individuals that understood that the liberties we have today were not a gift, but a result of centuries of struggle. Unfortunately, when reflecting on the popular music of report today, we get back to the nation#8217;s initial obsession with money, sex, and musicology, entertainment. Popular music today is dominated by mindless bantering about sex, violence, money, drugs, and purpose of research proposal, material possessions. I wish I was kidding, but watching an hour of MTV will show you that I#8217;m not. Let#8217;s be realistic here.

The college experience, like almost every other experience in America, has been tainted by money. Doctoral Musicology. A college education is no longer treated as an end in itself; but rather as a means to an end. In other words, education is no longer viewed as an inherently good thing in good catholic, itself, but as a means to doctoral getting a job to accumulate wealth and live a #8220;happy#8221; life. So it doesn#8217;t matter if you don#8217;t truly understand the material you learn in all your classes because in the end, your diploma is your ticket into the corporate world. #8220;D for Diploma,#8221; as many college students say now-a-days. Discursive Structure. The stupefying spiral in the public education system is another significant factor on influencing students#8217; perception of education. From an early age, kids have been conditioned to dislike school. It is no exaggeration to musicology describe an average American student#8217;s perspective on school as an excruciating pain that doesn#8217;t end until the bell rings at the end of the day signaling everyone to go home. This #8220;school sucks#8221; mentality is reinforced day after day, year after year, and after 13 years of school (K-12), it is no wonder that this attitude is further transferred to college. Thus, #8220;college as America used to character first understand it is coming to an end#8221; because education in America has been coming to an end. (Evident in the lack of doctoral dissertations public funding and lower test scores).

How would I know this? Because I lived it. I was immersed in the American public education system from kindergarten to black essay high school and found myself surrounded by this #8220;school is not cool#8221; mentality, even all the doctoral musicology, way through college. Agree Qualify. We even have words to describe people that view higher education as a good in itself; dork, nerd, geek, bookworm, etc. To conclude abruptly, the issue of #8220;what#8217;s the matter with college#8221; presents itself as a distraction to a much larger issue of #8220;what#8217;s the matter with America.#8221; Unfortunately, this is a fully loaded question that can not be tackled in doctoral, under just 1200 words. Essay. However, to answer the essay#8217;s question:

Yes, the college experience is less critical to the nation than it was a generation ago, but only because the lack of funding for public education and heavy concentration of dissertations musicology media ownership has made it so. Large protests and demonstrations have been and continue to happen in the United States and all over the world, but why the lack of media coverage? Demonstrations, drug use, hippies, bands, making a difference in disagree qualify essay, the world, all of these are images that were once synonymies with college. I#8217;m sure that if a person was to quiz an adult on what college was like in the 60#8217;s and 70#8217;s, they would no doubt be presented with images like this. #8220;We really made a difference back then.#8221; seems to be a reoccurring theme amongst people who graduated in this time era. What is the view of college today though? Is it different? Rick Perlstein seems to believe the view has been altered over dissertations musicology the years. After all, he clearly states this opinion in his essay What#8217;s the Matter with College?

After reading his piece and examining my own experience with people I know who have gone to university, I tend to believe Mr. Perlstein. The college experiences of agree disagree qualify yester-year seem to be worlds apart from the college experiences of today. Doctoral. Upon taking a closer look though, the experiences aren#8217;t that much different. For example, I will reference the Vietnam War era. Qualify. Here we have an unfavorable war, and large masses of college students with strong opinions. This parallels the current situation. However, they differ on one central main component. I am of course talking about the dissertations musicology, availability of the internet. Back in the seventies a student could write up pamphlets and distribute them by hand.

To do so though would require a gathering of people. Today with inventions such as e-mail, facebook, and instant messaging, it makes getting ideas across easier. Not to book first grade mention, no people skills are required. The internet is doctoral, a blessing and a curse. It allows for a much easier exchange of ideas, but there#8217;s no personal interaction. Does that take away from the overall college experience? This question is in classroom, not easily answered, but rather brings up another pivotal question. What is the college experience? We all know that it is different for every person, but clearly there is a difference between our college experience, and that of the flower generation. In essence the college lifestyle has merely adapted to doctoral musicology change. If the tools that college students have now were available during the previous years there is no doubt they would have been utilized.

Information may have been spread faster, but would all the demonstrations have been same? Would that fire that was there still have been present? Whereas college is the discursive structure for ielts, same in that people go, they learn, they become more mature, they question, it has changed in its role in influencing politics. I believe people go to school today to better prepare themselves for dissertations the real world. Students want to graduate, get into a good job, and make money, lots of it. Back in the day people went to purpose proposal college to learn, but more so for the experience. #8220;Hey we#8217;re going to musicology learn some stuff, but at the same time why can#8217;t we change the world?#8221; seemed to for ielts be what was really wanted in the 60#8217;s and 70#8217;s. With the political scene not nearly as hotly contested today in college, what is doctoral, still the same?

Sure we college kids have our music that no one has heard of, and book report grade, we still have our drugs, only now in smaller pill form, but I believe we also have a greater sense of self-worth. Even though the college major can change substantially over four years, kids nowadays know what they#8217;re in for when graduation day comes around. A majority of students leave college already in the workforce. Dissertations Musicology. Back in the 60#8217;s and 70#8217;s it is my belief that even though many people became successful, a majority back then really wasn#8217;t prepared for what was going to happen after graduation day. Basically the college of today does parallel the college of our parents. Things are just more readily available for essay today#8217;s youth. Dissertations. It#8217;s not necessarily a bad thing, but it just makes things a lot different for us.

No longer do we need to leave the dorm room to globally post our ideas that could radically alter the world view, that is of course if people still pay as much attention to college students now as they did in the 60#8217;s. The college experience is a product of the individual, and that is something that will always stay the same. My days leading up to college were like everyone else#8217;s: soul searching, anxious looks into the future, and SAT prep. Good Catholic. First the dissertations, right school had to be found where a mystical symbiotic bond would be formed. Then humble applications of prostration had to be sent in, pleas to enter through their silver arches into girls, a mythical community. The long wait would follow next, where admission officers, strangers, would decide your future with decidedly meaningful grades and test scores. I had ideas of what it would be like. Pop culture had filled me with Animal Housian notions of musicology old couches on bottle strewn lawns and John Bellucci#8217;s running amok, proud beer bellies leading the black, way.

But that was only dissertations musicology, a part of the picture. Essay Good. Intertwined with the idea of the doctoral dissertations musicology, perpetual party my mother had instilled the vision of character book report first grade a place of possibility where my mind would we awakened by wise mages of academia. From a societal lemming I would be transformed into a tiger of free thought. She was the first in her Irish Catholic family to go to college. From being taught by conservative nuns in high school so was flung into the University of Massachusetts in doctoral dissertations, the swinging 60#8217;s.

From all accounts, hers was the archetypal American college experience. She joined a sorority, dated the president of the fellow fraternity, and essay, even got lost in a flower powered van trying to doctoral drive to Woodstock. But what she recounts with the most passion (I still see a gleam in good girls, her eye when she tells the story) is the barrage of new ideas that hit her while away at college. She was shocked and shaken to the core when everything from the church to the infallible American government was put into question by her professors. She went from old nuns with rulers who taught the rigid role of women to bra burning, and she went from having a zealot like faith in her president to partaking in radical protests against the Vietnam War. That was my mother#8217;s college experience. Doctoral. Needless to say, I had lofty expectations of essay what awaited me. What did await me in the fall of 2004 was something else.

The first weeks were exciting; it was a lot like summer camp (meeting loads of new people, settling into doctoral, a new smaller room) but with a copious amount of beer and black dahlia, drugs. The air did bristle with energy and freedom; it was a new beginning for everyone. I barely recall being crammed into musicology, neighbor#8217;s dorm room with twelve others gathered around a tall hookah pipe. The spirit of togetherness and sharing was almost tangible as everyone added to the growing mountain of burning weed. After #8216;frosh week#8217; things cooled down slightly as classes commenced, but my education in funneling beer and hauling on bongs continued. Scholastically, my first year focused heavily on philosophy based on the Oxford tradition. So while my mind was altered from what I drank and agree disagree essay, smoked, it was hit harder from what I read and listened to doctoral dissertations in the large lecture halls.

Every major literary work seemed to captivate me, which led to a most undesirable inner conflict. Plato, Kant, and essay, Aquinas battled in my head for supremacy, while Dante just made me feel guilty over doctoral skipped classes and essay girls, last minute papers. He made sure I realized that I was sliding from doctoral dissertations musicology Paradisio down toward the great chasm in purpose proposal, the sea. In the dissertations musicology, end the existentialists offered a form of salvation. Instead of contributing to the chaotic spin of my moral compass, they simply broke it, leaving me on my own to essay girls choose my path. After that I was more attuned to doctoral dissertations see what was going around me in proposal, the college world. Out of the haze of the hangover and smoke I saw what had become of our great bastions of learning. They had become stale tributes to a bygone era. Genuine political activists had been replaced by stoned fans of the Daily Show and real feminists had been replaced by fashionistas.

In fact what I came to see everywhere was a pale replica of what was. It seemed everyone wanted to replicate the 60#8217;s, and the new age hippie was the result, a privileged middle class wannabe had emerged who wanted to sit cross-legged and sing Dylan songs and not do much else. It seemed to me the doctoral musicology, substance of college had been carved out over time as energy shifted toward only aesthetic preservation. Expectation led the way toward fabrication as we demanded what we were led to expect by our parents and by MTV. We wanted both our Belluccis and catholic girls, romantic revolution. On December 1st, 2004 I went to Halifax, Canada to protest President Bush with six thousand other #8216;activists.#8217; There were clever signs, chants, and a spirit of dissertations rebellion. We marched in union on the main street, blocking traffic and altogether having a great time. Bush never did see any of the protesters, being separated off by a mile of security, and the march got little press coverage. All in all I was left with an acute sense of disillusionment from the whole experience. We had done everything right, people had protested the system with minds full of conviction and heads full of Rasta dreads, but something was wrong. Agree Qualify Essay. We wanted to carry the torch of our radical forefathers and doctoral, foremothers.

We wanted to make a difference, but nothing was accomplished. A hole began to grow inside of me and I became conscious of the passion that passed through and out of me. What was the diversity in classroom essay, matter? What#8217;s the matter with college? Perhaps it was because in the new millennium the wool had already been removed from dissertations our eyes. Kids left High School jaded instead of na. Faster. Smarter. Better? In one day a student can race across campus from class to class, surf the #8216;net for the latest in peace talks and pop culture, save the world and essay, the whales at a local non-profit organization, and call a friend back home in the #8216;spare#8217; time left over.

At first, this day sounds productive and enriching but something profound is missing#8230;connection. Despite the varied benefits of technology and a high speed life, the modern wonders of western culture have stolen deep human association from much of college life. It started with the cell phone. Musicology. Small, unimposing, even cute. With it, long-distance correspondence was novel again. Soon, however, late appointments were easily rescheduled with a simple dial, angry phone calls were less intrusive, and we excluded ourselves from each other in exchange for those far away. While I personally would not trade the ease of grade calling my mother with any concern or excitement, I have seen how excessive cell phone use is disrupting the college atmosphere. At spontaneous gatherings of doctoral dissertations musicology intellectual discussion or pure frivolity, an involved participant is distant the second the phone rings whether or not he answers it.

A professor and her students are distracted from character book first intense conversations of human nature and the perplexities of dissertations musicology culture by the subtle vibrate of a phone. Being in touch with the world 24/7 has ironically cut us off from the present moment imbued with learning potential. Likewise, the current trend of portable music has removed college students from the present. Reflection and deep thoughts are stifled by the constant feeding tube of noise the ears of youth seem to depend on for nourishment.. Moments of silence permeated only by the wind and occasional bird trills have been usurped by plastic headphones that filter out the diversity in classroom, natural world and pipe in the artificial beats and rhythm of musicology man. Music criticism on campus is less about classes concerning opera and the innovations of discursive structure for ielts Schonberg and Strauss. Instead, it is students comparing and pirating their playlists, critiquing musical tastes of their friends rather than the masterful compositions of composers past. Granted, there have been times when music has caused me to think, ponder, and doctoral dissertations musicology, create, but oft times it is an escape from stress or boredom. Stealing the quiet inherent in time spoils the inquiring mind by letting it turn off rather than utilizing these moments for mulling over purpose of research the philosophical and ethical conundrums proposed in lecture or the possible political and historical reasons behind current events. The double edged sword of the Internet is doctoral musicology, arguably a time-waster but those who laud its benefits are also in the wrong. It seems that having knowledge literally #8216;at our fingertips#8217; would spawn swarms of character report grade overnight geniuses, yet they are markedly absent from campus life.

Complacency, it seems, has intervened. Lighting speed facts are demanded, we expect no less. But losing the hard work of searching for knowledge and understanding causes us to dissertations musicology take the waterfalls of potential leaning with a small cup rather than by the bucket fulls. Everyone can know the structure for ielts, precursors and outcomes of the Revolutionary War or the dissertations, reactions of the Krebs cycle, so why really learn, why really understand if it can be looked up in an instant? Even more so when many teachers have become mere managers of dahlia essay online courses; responsible for releasing the dissertations, torrent of facts but less accountable for instilling excitement and the thirst of inquiry. The skill of synthesizing all these facts is arduous when every minute detail could be scrutinized and a multitude of opinions exist.

It is black dahlia, almost easier to sit and watch the cascade rather than actively argue, debate, and conclude ones own opinion. Lest this be no more than a diatribe on dissertations, the ills of technology in a university setting, let me point out proposal, that the struggle of balancing electronic artifice with natural thought is a reflection of the larger battle between the individual and society as a whole. Musicology. The towers of technology have become beacons for the individual: customize your academic course list, my consumerism, his to-do list. What about #8216;ours#8217;? The university setting caters to the individual all too often at the expensive of collaboration. High grades are for the one who makes it to the top, group work for the lazy. The mentality of the masses is regarded as #8216;mob theory#8217; or #8216;blind sheep#8217; rather than recognized for purpose its power of creativity and brainstorming. Doctoral Dissertations. A generation raised on the word #8216;unique#8217; has lost faith in qualify, the strength of cohesive society.

The regulations of universities can continue to doctoral focus on each student by setting up endless programs to aid assimilation into agree qualify essay, and efficiency in college life. But by doing so, we lose the vivacity of productive, albeit sometimes reckless, exploration. More stands to be discovered in the spontaneous and innovative gatherings of oddballs and intellectuals-in-training than any choreographed activity that clumps students together through automated questionnaires. Doctoral Dissertations. The good intents of college counselors to support students socially and academically is unfortunately seen as forceful imposition of #8216;the system#8217; driving students to mind-numbing techno-simulated activities rather than human interaction in order to avoid doing what the rules encourage for essay their success. College should be a time of discovery no matter how random and unlike the picture perfect route to a prosperous career. If administrators take the chance of dissertations musicology a little more chaos, students will surprise even ourselves: groups will naturally coagulate and the individual will more readily set aside electronic isolation in diversity in classroom essay, exchange for enlivening and stimulating discussion concerned less with movies and doctoral musicology, music and more with solutions for society. It is time to first turn off the switches and turn on our minds. It is time to embrace the quiet to find ourselves and our connections to others in the here and now.

The Kids are Too All Right The Homogenization of Youth and the College Experience: A response to Rick Perlstein#8217;s essay #8220;What#8217;s the matter with College#8221; If we were to examine the mechanisms of college today, we would find the framework of doctoral dissertations these institutions to be startlingly similar to those of a factory. I recently received my undergraduate degree from catholic girls Eugene Lang, the undergraduate Liberal Arts division of doctoral musicology New School University. Essay Girls. The New School University is an appropriate place to examine the streamlining of the #8220;college experience#8221;. My mother#8217;s college experience took place during the golden age of campus activism, the 1960#8217;s. Regardless, she finished her undergraduate degree in less than three years, for she did not have the time or financial opportunities to enjoy the frontier of American lifestyles as reminisced in Rick Perlstein#8217;s essay. Her only #8220;radical#8221; act was wearing jeans to school.. Yet, when it came time for her son to start applying to college, she was awash in nostalgia.

For my mother, who didn#8217;t have the privilege to doctoral musicology live on a college campus or take part in any extra-curricular activities, a reminder of these years still exuded a sense of nervous excitement. Herein lies the defining characteristic of purpose proposal my generation: there is no more excitement, because there is no more danger in the college experience; no more lust for danger. By #8220;danger#8221;, I do not infer acts of doctoral musicology violence. By danger, I mean the uncertainty entangled with the new- the discursive essay structure for ielts, mystery in experiencing the doctoral musicology, never before. The contemporary college experience is becoming similar to life in a cubicle with one#8217;s computer as their sole connection to the social sphere. Much has been said about my generation#8217;s apathy: we don#8217;t protest, we don#8217;t host sit-ins, we don#8217;t scream at officers, we don#8217;t get arrested, and qualify, we don#8217;t argue. Yes, I agree, my peers and doctoral dissertations, I are a decadent generation of sloths. These critiques on the current youth generation (mostly made by card-carrying members) rarely attempt to analyze the situation at hand. The generation gap between those who are now attending college (born in the 1980#8217;s) and those preceding them is substantial because in part, the of research, former is the first generation to doctoral dissertations be raised on discursive, computers, coming of age as mass media digital technologies began to dominate forms of human communication. Doctoral Musicology. We are the first group who has suckled nourishment from the teat of a microchip. The modes of discourse which made the college experience of the Sixties an important forum for discussing social change such as protests, debates, and artistic experimentation, demand a physical presence, dissimilar to the #8220;poking#8221; or #8220;slapping#8221; options on Facebook.

We experience the world differently than our parents. Agree Disagree Qualify. Our perception is enmeshed in the binary code of digital technology. In an era allowing one to walk down the street while chatting with a friend across the doctoral dissertations, globe, the planet loses its spatial confines, promoting homogeneity. Character Book Grade. The world and its beating heart in dissertations, academia are rapidly paved over in the name of technological progress with my generation as its biggest cheerleaders there are no other heroes to of research follow. As a business, the modern college must follow the guidelines of doctoral its clientele#8217;s demand for the empiricism of digital technology. Campuses nationwide have spent a majority of their financial resources and raised tuition to make technology accessible to students. On many campuses, buildings have been constructed or remodeled to allow for the most technologically progressive computing stations complete with scanners, video editors, and digital imaging stations. Universities create accounts on social database sites like Facebook, Myspace, and Friendster to exude a contemporary aura. For example, The Nemater, has adapted remarkably to needs throughout its history. Diversity In Classroom. In the 1930#8217;s, when European intellectuals were fleeing Nazi Europe, the dissertations, New School was a bastion for academia in discursive essay structure, its most radical forms.

In this new century, their knack for dissertations musicology contemporary saliency has not slackened a bit; they understand college is now a multi-million dollar business that must meet client demands. As a generation who has everything at the right click of essay good girls a mouse button, there is still something abstract and coldly scientific about the new modes of doctoral dissertations musicology communication our colleges have wholeheartedly embraced. The way we imagine the world is fragmented and decidedly systematic. When a friend comes to mind, we automatically visualize their list of favorite bands, books, and films as displayed on their Myspace account, like a seismographic chart. Our personality becomes empirically structured in the vein of a pharmacist listing ingredients for Wellbutrin. With a youth so embedded in a digital-binary worldview, yet hungry for downloadable excitement, a college must see their clientele the way they would like to be seen: fixed groupings of diversity essay ones and doctoral dissertations, zeros. This is not to say college could rediscover the aesthetics of the sixties if advanced technological infrastructures were banished and resources channeled to more humanistic modes of discourse. Essay For Ielts. This overly simplistic solution would leave a generation of students with limited social skills and uncomfortable college administrators trying to work through the confusion. Something essential must be rediscovered. The college experience is doctoral dissertations, only exciting when young people are encouraged to participate in essay structure, acts of discovery during these formative years. Of course, the act of discovery can be dangerous, for the unknown cannot thrive on safety and doctoral, boredom.

The experience of disagree essay youth is irrevocably changed in this #8220;digital age#8221; with the Internet and other omnipresent structures of mass media. If the University is to survive in this new century, institutions must understand the importance of authentic experiences of discovery. If college does not maintain its function as a forum for such revelatory activities, the training school model will soon replace it. The digitization of the college experience remains the doctoral, burden of youth. Sentimental phrases such as, #8220;the young are the mirror of society, the heart beat of the structure for ielts, nation,#8221; abound in reference to the student-affiliated, social movements from the Sixties.

Our generation lives in their shadow, like a pudgier, younger sibling. Yet, there has been no confrontation between students and doctoral, the dehumanizing ideology transforming the intimate scholarly seminar into an online chat room. When I first came to diversity essay New School in doctoral dissertations, the Fall of dahlia 2003, its technological metamorphosis was in its infantile stage. By the time I graduated, classes were being offered as off-site online chats, online message boards replaced seminars on the assigned texts, and most contact between students and professors occurred via E-mail or the doctoral dissertations musicology, University-wide Blackboard#8217;?? databases. Many of my peers accepted this readily. Essay. Why? It allowed us to sleep in. In July, The Magazine published What's the Matter With College, an essay by doctoral dissertations musicology, the historian Rick Perlstein, online and invited college students across the United States to respond.

Some 600 undergraduates did -- many agreeing with Perlstein's assertion that college as America used to understand it is coming to an end, many dismissing his argument as so much nostalgic pap, still others taking the occasion to critique higher education from an insider's perch. To continue the conversation, we're featuring the winning student essay and four runners-up, and posting another 450 of the entries in a searchable format. Dahlia. ?Gram Negative Unknown Lab Report Essay Sample. The Unknown Gram Negative bacterium inoculated in a Tryptic Soy broth medium was randomly selected from a group of other unknowns. In order to identify this unknown the seven different types of biochemical tests will be conducted on doctoral musicology this unknown bacterium to identify it out of 6 possible bacteria; Escherichia coli(E. coli), Enterobacter aerogenes (E.aerogenes), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K.pneumoniae), Proteus mirabilis(P.miranilis), Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P.aeruginosa), and Salmonella typhimurium (S.typhimurium). The biochemical tests utilized were; Triple Sugar Iron Agar (TSIA) test, Sulfur Indole Motility (SIM) test, Methyl red test and Voges-Proskauer (MR-VP) test, Citrate test, Urea test, and Gelatin test. After conducting each of these tests, the unknown bacteria number 24 was concluded to be Proteus mirabilis. Introduction. This probe purpose was to discursive help identify an unknown gram negative bacterium, distributed by dissertations our TA instructor. It is relatively important to identify unknown organisms, those that are unidentified can certainly be harmful and have the potential to good catholic cause harm to the public. The use for these several test experiments are very important, mainly because it aids in the identification of unknown and dissertations musicology potentially harmful organisms, Along with reflecting how well an organism can grow or react in discursive for ielts, certain environments. The T-streak procedure for isolation of unknown was conducted before identifying the morphological properties.

A T-streak is performed to isolate bacteria over three regions of a Tryptic Soy Agar plate (TSA), into single colonies that are able to be inoculated for dissertations, biochemical tests. It is in the third quadrant of the TSA plate is purpose proposal where a pure culture can be found and doctoral used for the biochemical tests. As stated in the lab manual, that there are six possible unknown bacteria. The T- streak isolation method will make sure there is no contamination in the unknown. The bacteria being utilized in this experimentation will be unknown gram negative bacterium number 22 that had been inoculated in character report first grade, a Tryptic Soy Broth. Musicology? After receiving the unknown number 22, it was gram stained to be assured that the bacteria being utilized was indeed gram-negative. The purpose of the gram stain was to be used to identify the morphological characteristics of the unknown. The gram stain is a differential stain that utilizes a primary stain of crystal violet (i.e. a purple dye), iodine, alcohol decolorization, and essay good safranin (i.e. a tinted red dye); used as counterstain. Standard results of a proper gram stain would show a bacterium to doctoral dissertations musicology be gram positive if purple, and black essay gram negative if pink.

The results from the Gram Stain of unknown number 24 showed that unknown number 24 has bacillus shaped cell morphology, holding a dark-pink color confirming it to be a gram negative organism indeed. Dissertations Musicology? In both gram-positive and gram-negative the cell walls house peptidoglycan, which is a blend of carbohydrates and amino-acids. Gram negative bacteria cell walls have a thin peptidoglycan layer, in which an purpose of research ample amount of lipids cross throughout the peptidoglycan and cell membrane. During the gram stain, lipids are prevalent in dissertations, the gram negative bacteria are usually transparent as a result of the alcohol decolorizing agent. This allows the peptidoglycan of gram negative bacteria to retain the counterstain safranin (Leboffe Pierce, 105) Specific biochemical tests where implemented to follow, after the gram stain found unknown number 24 to be gram negative. These tests include a Triple Sugar Iron Agar (TSIA) test that uses a rich media that separates bacteria by purpose proposal the fermentation of Lactose, Sucrose, and Glucose, and have the capacity to reduce sulfur (Leboffe Pierce 206). The objective of the test is to show if the unknown could exploit the carbohydrates in the medium to ferment into gas or reduce the sulfur. Any bacteria that possess the ability to ferment glucose and doctoral lactose will also turn the medium yellow throughout (Leboffe and Pierce 206). The absence of fermentation, the entire slant will be red which means that peptone was catabolized both aerobically and anaerobically which produced products that are alkaline.

The presence of any sort of first, black coloring on the slant indicates hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Any kind of air bubbles is an indication that there was gas production. The sulfur indole motility (SIM) test, determines if bacteria can produce sulfur and indole from tryptophan, and if they are motile, meaning they are flagellated and have the ability to move. Casein and doctoral animal tissue are used as sources of amino acids. Sulfur is in the form of thiosulfate and there is also an iron-containing compound.

There are two ways in which bacteria can reduce sulfur to hydrogen sulfide: if the enzyme cysteine desulfurase is present cysteine will be catalyzed to purpose proposal pyruvate and if the enzyme thiosulfate reductase is present sulfur will be catalyzed at the end of the electron transport chain (Leboffe Pierce 202-205). Similar to the TSIA test, a black coloring within the medium it is an indicator of sulfur reduction. Doctoral Dissertations? To determine if the dahlia, bacteria produces indole, Kovacs’ reagent was added to doctoral the SIM test shortly after incubation. Purpose Of Research? If the layer where the Kovacs’ reagent was added turns red, this indicates that the organism being tested is an dissertations indole producer. Structure? This is possible because the casein and dissertations musicology animal protein contain tryptophan in essay for ielts, which under the presence of a bacteria carrying the enzyme tryptophanse, tryptophan can be hydrolyzed to pyruvate, ammonia, and indole (Leboffe Pierce 203). Motility is determined by simply examining if there is any radiating growth from a stab line after stab inoculating the bacteria with an inoculating needle. The Methyl Red (MR) test determines if bacteria are able to perform mixed acid fermentation.

Methyl red is musicology a combination medium containing peptone, glucose, and a phosphate buffer in the form of potassium phosphate. Qualify Essay? In order to doctoral dissertations find out if bacteria are capable of mixed acid fermentation, methyl red indicator dye is added after incubation of the agree, broth. Methyl red is red at pH 4.4 and doctoral dissertations musicology yellow at pH 6.2. Between these two pH values, it is various shades of orange (Leboffe and Pierce 161). Any other color produced other than red means the organism is not capable of essay girls, mixed acid fermentation. The Voges-Proskauer (VP) test is doctoral conducted using a similar broth of character book report, that used in the methyl red test. Both methyl red and Voges-Proskauer make up a combination medium. The Voges-Proskauer test was designed for organisms that are able to ferment glucose, but quickly convert their acid products to acetoin and 2,3-butandiol (Leboffe and Pierce 161). After incubation, the Vogues Proskauer reagent A and reagent B are added to the broth.

VP broth changes colors due to the oxidizing of reagents the acetoin to diacetyl which react with guanidine nuclei that turns the broth red if it is dissertations musicology positive. If the color of the broth turns red, this means it is a positive result, and if there is no color change at disagree qualify essay, all or the color is copper, this is an indication of a negative result. The citrate test determines if a bacterium possess citrate-permease as citrate is the only source of carbon in the medium. The medium used in this test is the Simmons Citrate Agar, which is a type of utilization media. Utilization media are highly defined formulations designed to differentiate organisms based on their ability to grown when an essential nutrient is strictly limited (Leboffe and Pierce 175).

If bacteria have the enzyme citrate-permease they can transport molecules that will be converted to pyruvate within the cell. Once the molecules are converted to pyruvate many products can be made all depending on the pH of the environment. The actual Simmons Citrate Agar has sodium citrate as the doctoral musicology, carbon source and ammonium phosphate as the nitrogen source. In order to tell whether or not an organism tests positive for citrate utilization, Bromthymol blue dye is added to the agar. If the pH is above 7.6, then the dye will be blue which is indicative of a positive test result. If there is no color change, meaning the Simmons Citrate slant stayed green after incubation, there a negative result meaning citrate is not utilized. The urea hydrolysis test determines which organisms are able or unable to agree essay hydrolyze urea with the enzyme urease. The urea hydrolysis test can yield four possible results: rapid urease-strong urease production-positive, slow urease-weak urease production- weak positive, and urease absent-no urease hydrolysis-negative bacteria. The actual broth is made with urea, peptone, potassium phosphate, glucose, and phenol red. Within the doctoral musicology, urea broth all of the essential nutrients that bacteria would need are provided by peptone and diversity glucose and the potassium phosphate is dissertations musicology used as a mild buffer that resists alkalinization due to peptone metabolism.

A positive urease bacteria will turn the broth pink in approximately 24 hours to 6 days for a rapid urease-positive organism and can take up to 8 days for a slow urease-positive organism. Urea hydrolysis to ammonia by urease-positive organisms will overcome the buffer in the medium and discursive change it from dissertations, orange to pink (Leboffe and Pierce 187). The gelatin hydrolysis test determines if bacteria have the ability to produce gelatinases. Some microorganisms that are able to hydrolyze gelatin secrete the enzymes known as gelatinases, which break down gelatin (Leboffe Pierce 192). A simple test medium known as nutrient gelatin was used to discursive for ielts determine if a certain bacterium can produce gelatinases. Nutrient gelatin is made up of doctoral dissertations, gelatin, peptone, and beef extract. A point worth noting is that nutrient gelatin is very different when compared to discursive essay for ielts other media because the actual solidifying agent is also the substrate (Leboffe Pierce 192).

There are two possible results yielded from this test: a gelatinase-positive organism which breaks down the Gelatin medium into doctoral musicology liquid, and in classroom essay a gelatinase-negative organism that does not liquefy the medium therefore meaning that it does not secrete gelatinases. The gelatin-hydroylsis test needs approximately a week long incubation period to accurately record results. Methods. In order to determine what unknown bacteria number 25 was, many biochemical tests as well as a gram-stain was performed. All aseptic techniques were carefully followed with each experiment.

Before any tests could be performed the bacteria had to be isolated into a pure colony. This was achieved by doctoral a T-streak. Purpose Of Research? Biochemical tests were started and incubated, after the T-streak results showed no contamination or mixture of organisms, for 24 hours in a hot room of 37 degrees celcius. All of the bacteria that were used in the biochemical tests came from the TSA plate used to T-streak unknown number 25. Dissertations? In order to determine the morphology of the bacteria a gram-stain followed the T-streak. Yielding results that showed the unknown number 25 to be a gram negative bacillus. After identifying the morphology of the bacteria, the biochemical tests came next. The TSIA test was performed by obtaining a sample of bacteria from the T-streak plate with an inoculating needle.. The needle was flamed and catholic girls then a sample from the Streak plate was gathered, and doctoral musicology then inoculated by stabbing the agar butt and then streaking the slant.

The TSIA slant was then incubated for 24 hours in a hot room of 37 degrees Celsius, shortly after proper incubation. The SIM test was performed by stab inoculating the provided SIM tube. The needle was flamed and bacteria samples were collected from the good catholic girls, streak plate containing the unknown. The stab-inoculation method followed and the needl was inserted only dissertations within 1cm of the bottom of the purpose, SIM tube, shortly afterwards inoculation a 24 hours incubation period in a hot room of doctoral dissertations musicology, 37 degrees Celsius. The MR and VP tests were performed by inoculating the MR and VP tubes with the pure culture of unknown number 25. Book Grade? Using a flamed inoculating loop, the dissertations, pure culture of discursive structure, unknown number 25 was added to the MR and VP tubes. Afterwards the dissertations, proper reagents were added to each tube. Three drops of methyl red reagent were added to the methyl red tube where the results were observed immediately and properly recorded. Fifteen drops of VP reagent A were added to the VP tube and mixed properly. Discursive? Then five drops of VP reagent B were added and mixed properly.

The VP tube was observed 10 minutes, and results were recorded. The citrate test was performed by streaking a Simmons Citrate slant with an musicology inoculating loop. The loop was flamed and a collection of bacteria from the pure culture of unknown number 25 followed. The citrate slant was then inoculated by lightly moving the tube in a swivel pattern to help the loop not touch the purpose of research, walls of the container. The Citrate slant was then incubated for dissertations, 48 hours in a hot room of 37 degrees Celsius. Observations of purpose proposal, any change or growth were properly recoded afterwards. The urea hydrolysis test was performed by inoculating the urea broth with a hefty amount of pure colonies from the streak plate. An inoculating loop was used for proper inoculation of the bacteria. After properly inoculating the doctoral dissertations musicology, urea broth with the unknown bacteria, the urea broth tube was incubated for 24 hours in purpose of research proposal, a hot room of 37 degrees Celsius, they were checked after 24 hours and then incubated again for several more days to get proper results from the test. Any observation of color change were recorded. The gelatin hydrolysis test was performed by stab-inoculating a tube of Nutrient Gelatin tube with an inoculating needle.

An incubation period of a week in the hot room of 37 degrees Celsius. Doctoral Dissertations Musicology? After the week long incubation the Nutrient Gelatin tube was placed in of research proposal, the cold room for one hour to doctoral musicology allow it to disagree solidify. The nutrient gelatin tube was taken out of the doctoral, cold room and carefully observed for any melting or liquefaction. Any observations were then recorded. Book Report Grade? Results. After conducting the TSIA test, it was observed that the slant had turned a yellow and had a yellow butt. This proves that unknown number 25 is a fermenter of glucose, lactose and possibly sucrose. Also the bottom of the slant had crack and abrasions in it, signifying that there was also gas production. There was no black precipitate in the TSIA slant, proving that the musicology, unknown organism does not reduce sulfur. After the SIM test, it was observed that no black coloring had come about the medium, further showing that the unknown number 25 does not reduce sulfur. When testing for essay girls, indole production the Kovac’s reagent was added to doctoral dissertations the medium and there was a production of character grade, a red precipitate at the top of the medium after a few minutes proving this organism ability to produce indole.

The results of the motility test were easiest to determine. The organisms showed weak motility, proving that the unknown organism was flagellated and doctoral can produce movement. After conducting the MR test it was confirmed that the discursive essay for ielts, unknown bacteria tested positive. After five drops of the methyl red reagent were added a red color began to form which was an immediate indication of a positive test. This positive test means that the unknown bacteria is capable of performing mixed acid fermentation. The Voges-Proskauer test came back with a negative result. After adding 15 drops of VP reagent A and 5 drops of VP reagent B there was no color changes evident and were observed for musicology, 10 minutes. This negative result indicated that unknown bacteria 25 did not produce any acetoin and diversity essay was not a fermenter of 2,3-buteandiol. The citrate test showed a negative result with no color change or growth of the unknown bacterium. This proves that the unknown number 25 did not utilize the citrate in the medium, also meaning the doctoral, unknown did not posses citrate-permease, which is necessary to discursive for ielts transport the molecules of the bacteria into the cell converting it to pyruvate (Leboff Pierce 175).With Escherichia coli being the dissertations, only bacteria that had a negative result for this test, for the remaining of the lab report the unknown will be simply referred to as E.coli.

After 8 days of incubation time in a 37°C hot room the Urea test show a negative result of no color change. This proves the inability of E.coli to disagree essay hydrolyze urea, and doctoral dissertations musicology possibly does not produce urease. The Gelatin test also yielded a negative result. The gelatin medium did not breakdown obviously showing that E.coli does not have or produce Gelatinase. This experiment required many different biochemical tests to be conducted for a few reasons; the first being to identify which bacteria was the diversity, one that was randomly selected and secondly for educational purposes so that students will become familiar and gain experience about the different types of doctoral musicology, media and report laboratory techniques. Doctoral? The unknown bacteria which I selected was number 25.

The citrate test truly helped confirm that the unknown bacteria 25 was in character book, fact Escherichia coli. After these experimentation my original guess was correct in saying I believed the unknown bacteria I had was E.coli, and indeed it was. E.coli is a member of the Enterobacteriaceae family which is also where Salmonella typhinurium is also classified. Doctoral? E.coli lives in the intestines of humans and essay can cause many infections ranging in severity. It doesn’t even require any growth factors, and can synthesize all essential purines, pyrimidines, amino acids and vitamins, starting with their carbon source, as part of musicology, their own intermediary metabolism (Todar). Character Report Grade? I was nervous about working with E.coli and bacteria because in general before starting this lab because of some of the doctoral musicology, symptoms they can cause. Especially intestinal swelling (MedLineplus). Even with that stated I have grown to enjoy this experiment and have learned so much valuable information that will benefit me in essay, my nursing career. 10 Things Smart PhDs Do NOT Put On Their Industry Resumes. Written by Isaiah Hankel, Ph.D. What are you supposed to do when you send hundreds of resumes out and get nothing back but a few automated responses? This is the doctoral, question I was trying to answer my last year of graduate school. I literally sent out hundreds of resumes.

I posted my resume to Monster.com and waited for the tidal wave of purpose of research industry job offers to roll in. Yeah…that didn’t happen. I polished up a generic resume and uploaded it to dissertations musicology, dozens of industry job websites. I remember getting on agree essay, Pfizer and Baxter’s websites, clicking the doctoral dissertations musicology, job opportunities tab, and essay catholic girls, seeing all the industry job openings. “Yes!” I thought. Dissertations Musicology! Piece-of-cake. I’ll just upload my resume and proposal, have an offer by the end of the week.

There couldn’t possibly be that many other PhDs out there applying to the same PhD jobs. Wrong. Doctoral! I found out later that some companies receive over 2,000 resumes a day. Agree Essay! 2,000 a day! I felt stuck and lost so I asked my academic advisor to help me write my resume. He sent me his CV and dissertations musicology, said “Here, look at this.” Great.

Thanks for nothing. I knew that industry hiring managers weren’t interested in CVs. How did my advisor not know this? That’s when I realized how little lifetime academics know about getting an industry job. In Classroom Essay! So, I asked one of the dissertations, job counselors at the graduate school for advice. First! She told me the key to getting an interview was to write a very detailed cover letter, make sure that my education history was at the top of my resume, and to include a one sentence “objective” at the very top of my resume. Okay. That’s great advice. Doctoral Dissertations Musicology! Right?

Nope. She was wrong too. It wasn’t until 3 months later that I found out of research, just how awful her advice was. Over 427,000 resumes are posted to Monster.com each week—that’s just one job website. Doctoral Dissertations! Most companies use Applicant Tracking Software to dahlia essay, automatically filter and eliminate 75% of the resumes sent to them. If your resume makes it to the desk of a hiring manager and doctoral, recruiter, they will spend an average of just 5-7 seconds reading it. Seconds. That’s all you get. All the hours, days, months, and years you’ve spent getting your PhD will come down to just a few seconds. Think of how hard you’ve worked to get to black dahlia essay, where you are. Are you really going to dissertations musicology, throw it all away by not taking the time to get your resume just right?

More is more. This is what most PhDs are taught. Triplicates are better than duplicates. An N of 200 is better than an N of 2. A CV with 10 first author publications is better than a CV with one first author publication. On and on. But, when it comes to creating a strong industry resume for a PhD job, less is more. Purpose Of Research! Adding the wrong things or too many things to your resume will keep you from getting the industry job you want.

A better strategy is to simplify your industry resume down to only the things that industry hiring managers and recruiters actually want to see. Here are 10 things smart PhDs like you should remove from your industry resume: 1. Unprofessional email address. Three out of four resumes are discarded because they’re sent from an unprofessional email address or have an unprofessional email address attached to their resume or cover letter. This means you can put yourself ahead of 75% of the other applicants simply by eliminating any references to unprofessional email addresses like bigboy77@yahoo.com or similar. A lot of PhDs are afraid to use their University email address when applying to jobs because they think their PI is going to hack into their email account and find out they’re trying to leave the lab. This won’t happen.

PIs don#8217;t have access to musicology, your University email account. However, if you’re currently working in industry and looking to change jobs, don’t use your work email because your boss can absolutely see your emails. Instead, create a very professional gmail address in this format: firstname.lastname@gmail.com. Purpose! If this version of doctoral your name is taken, then simple insert your middle initial or middle name between your first and last names. 2. Discursive Essay For Ielts! Impersonal greeting.

Never use an impersonal greeting on doctoral, your resume’s cover letter. Greetings like #8220;Dear Sirs#8221; or #8220;To Whom It May Concern#8221; are creepy, distant, and outdated. Most importantly, these greetings makes you seem lazy. Instead of taking the time to research who the hiring manager is, you just threw your hands up in the air and purpose, typed a general greeting that could be applied to anyone. Dissertations Musicology! As a result, your resume and candidacy were seen as mediocre at best. Smart PhDs always use a personal greeting.

They know that over 50% of all top industry jobs are given to referrals, but only 7% of applicants are referrals. Diversity! Let that sink in. Over 50% of the best positions are given to people who have networked and, as a result, have been introduced to doctoral musicology, a decision-maker or someone who will vouch for them to essay structure, a decision-maker. Yet, 93% of people applying to these jobs are just sending out their resumes blindly and impersonally on doctoral dissertations musicology, the Internet without knowing anyone at the company they want to work for. Which side of the fence are you on? Before you send your resume in, find out who the hiring manager is. Or at least find out the name of someone who works on the team you’re trying to crack into. At the very least, use the name of someone in purpose of research proposal human resources. Then, connect with people who work at the company you’re seeking employment at. Network on LinkedIn, network at musicology, face-to-face events, and do whatever it takes to get to diversity in classroom, know someone well enough to dissertations musicology, put their name on in classroom essay, the first line of your cover letter.

In the end, your cover letter should be short and sweet, with a personal greeting (e.g. Dear Jeremy, Dear Dr. Smith) and should start with a line like, “I have been in contact with Jason Jones , your Regional Sales Manager , who mentioned that your open Project Manager position would be perfect for me.” Putting an objective statement at the top of your resume will not help you get an industry job. Doctoral Dissertations! Instead, it will paint you into a corner. Essay! A better strategy is to use a visual center . A visual center starts at musicology, 2 inches from the top of your resume and ends 2 inches below that. This center should be emphasized with graphics, such as textboxes, bullets, and bold fonts. Load the diversity, visual center with the value you will offer the company, such as across-the-board accomplishments, industry-specific skills, a summary of a highly successful project you lead, or even a clipping from a recommendation letter or news article about your work.

Resumes with visual centers that are interesting and catch the reader’s eye will be read much more carefully than they would be otherwise. A strong visual center will make you stand out without preventing you from being considered for additional positions. If you want employers to notice you and keep you in doctoral mind for other positions that you may also be qualified for, replace your objective statement with a visual center. Recruiters and hiring managers spend just a couple of seconds looking at a resume before deciding whether it’s worth a full read. This means you should show them exactly what they want to see first. Essay! And guess what—they don’t care about the dates.

They care about the doctoral dissertations musicology, title of the position you held, the name of your employers, the location of discursive essay for ielts your employer, and, most importantly, what you achieved. Don’t mistake your resume for a publication citation. Dissertations! It doesn’t need to list the dates first. Character Book First! When listing past employment, exclude the dates or at least list them last. If you really want to get your resume read, list your experience by relevance, not by date. Just like you can sort publications on PubMed by relevance to a specific topic, you can sort your work experience by doctoral relevance to a specific position. Character Report Grade! Always put your work experience above your education history. Smart PhDs never bury the lead on their resumes. Doctoral Musicology! Your lead is agree qualify essay, what employers want to read most on your resume.

Drop the dates and the dated mentality. Dissertations! Instead, create a strong visual center, followed by a list of work experience sorted by relevance to the position you#8217;re applying for. Industry employers do not want to read about your job duties. They care about the diversity in classroom essay, outcomes you achieved, not how you achieved the outcomes. Your resume does not need a methodology section. Doctoral Dissertations! Delete any reference to “job duties” or “responsibilities included.” Instead, list key achievements as tangibly as possible. Unlike your typical CV, a good industry resume is diversity in classroom essay, always accomplishment-focused.

This means that within seconds of reading your resume, employers should be able to see that the return on investment for hiring you is higher than the salary you are asking for. You must demonstrate that you can save your potential employer time and make them money. If you’ve spent your entire career in academia, you can still add tangible outcomes to doctoral musicology, your resume. For example, you could say, “Helped PI recognize over character first grade, $1,000,000 in doctoral dissertations musicology grant funding by skillfully leading a team of scientists to complete all projects on time, resulting in discursive structure for ielts grant renewal every year.” Do not waste precious resume space on listing the contact information of three professional references. Don’t even waste space on doctoral, writing “References Upon Request.” Employers know that you have references. If you don’t, then you shouldn’t be applying for the job in the first place. You should be networking. Essay Catholic! 7. Typos and dissertations, grammatical errors. If you can’t spell #8220;Technical Specialist#8221; correctly, you shouldn#8217;t be one.

At least that#8217;s what employers will think when they read a typo on black dahlia, your resume. Surveys and studies show that top companies care more about communication and interpersonal skills than anything else when interviewing new candidates. Musicology! One of the very first indicators employers will have of your communication skills is your industry resume. Black Essay! If it is doctoral dissertations, riddled with mistakes, you will not move to the interview stage. Your industry resume must be absolutely perfect. If you’re not a good writer or if English is not your native language and you’re submitting your resume in English, make sure you have a professional editor proofread it for errors. You don’t need to purpose proposal, pay hundreds of dollars for this.

You can find worthy editors on eLance and Fiverr who will polish your resume for doctoral dissertations as little as $5. Once you’ve had your resume professionally proofread, go back and insert relevant keywords into book first, it. Then have it proofread again. This is the best and most successful sequence to follow. First, write your resume without considering keywords so it flows well. Then, have it proofread. Next, add keywords. And finally, have it proofread again. Using relevant keywords is doctoral dissertations, critical to getting your resume past the in classroom, Applicant Tracking Software checkpoint. It’s also important for getting your resume past recruiters and hiring managers who will use the “Find” function on their computers to doctoral dissertations musicology, do quick keyword searches on your resume. The best place to find the keywords you should use is in the job description of the position you’re applying for.

For example, if the description contains the phrase “project management” over and over againas in, project management experience requiredyou can bet the hiring managers entered it into their Applicant Tracking Software and that they will search for it themselves once they have your resume in hand. Publications don#8217;t matter in industry. Even hiring managers for industry RD positions don’t care about your publications. This is especially true at purpose, the resume-reading stage of the hiring process. I know—it hurts. I’m sorry. There may be a few outdated hiring managers or RD directors who will insist that publications should be listed on an applicant’s resume, but they’re simply wrong. Smart PhDs know that putting their publication record on an industy resume is a waste of time. They know that industry employers want to see work experience and results, not publications or education history. You’ve worked hard on your publications and should be proud of them, but don’t let your pride get in doctoral the way of creating a sharp resume.

Besides, your publication record isn’t going anywhere. Once you get to the interview stage, if hiring managers want to bring up the essay, papers you’ve published, they will. Recruiters and hiring managers have mountains of resumes sent to doctoral, them daily. Recall that some companies receive thousands of resumes a day and most of these will be filtered out by Applicant Tracking Software. The remaining resumes will be further filtered out by disagree employers who are unwilling to read anything beyond a bullet point followed by a single sentence.

Think of writing an industry resume as the opposite doctoral musicology, of writing an academic journal article. Instead of using dense text and discursive essay, long paragraphs to construct a well-formulated argument, you want to simplify everything down into digestible nuggets of doctoral musicology information. Avoid turnoffs like small, dense font styles and sizes. Avoid run-on sentences. Avoid paragraphs altogether. Smart PhDs put everything on black essay, their resume behind a bullet point, number, or header and never put more than two sentences together at a time. 10.

Overly personal information. Doctoral Dissertations! Industry resumes that are submitted with photos are rejected 88% of the time. Diversity In Classroom! Why? Because submitting a photo is too personal. Don’t make the mistake of musicology getting too personal too soon. The most important rule of writing an effective industry resume is to leave off all personal information. If you’re smart and have followed the other points in this article, you know that networking and finding strong references is the most important thing you can do to discursive essay structure for ielts, get your resume read. The only personal information you should submit with your resume is a short cover letter with a personal greeting and a personal reference—a reference who works at the company you’re applying to.

However, don’t be afraid to musicology, add a line (just one, single line) to your resume indicating a particular award you’ve received or leadership role you’ve held in the past, especially if it’s a non-academic award or leadership role. Essay! Things like “Captain of the swim team winning 3 consecutive awards for leadership” or “Four-time Habitat for Humanity project leader and Eagle Scout” will help differentiate you from the piles of resumes coming in from PhDs who having nothing but academic achievements to dissertations musicology, reference. For Ielts! Finally, it’s important to dissertations, understand that almost every company you apply to (up to 93% of them) will Google your name and look up your social media profiles. Keep it clean and readable by the software and essay, then by doctoral musicology a human if you are lucky enough to of research proposal, make the musicology, first cut. Discursive Essay! Thanks for sharing your opinion Sally. Some very good points made and to stress the point on musicology, typos and grammatical errors please take notice of the good, following: #8220;However, don’t be afraid to doctoral dissertations, add a line (just one, single line) to your resume indicating a particular award you’re received or leadership roll you’ve held in the past, especially if it’s a non-academic award or leadership roll.#8221; I believe you meant to essay, say #8220;you#8217;ve#8221; instead or #8220;you#8217;re#8221; and dissertations musicology, #8220;role#8221; instead of agree essay #8220;roll#8221; Thanks for the find Marwah, though you may have missed the point of the article. No actually, I appreciate the article and I am implementing your suggestions accordingly. Doctoral Musicology! #8220;7. Typos and grammatical errors. If you can’t spell “Technical Specialist” correctly, you shouldn’t be. one. At least that’s what employers will think when they read a typo on agree disagree, your resume.#8221; ..condescends poster for being pedantic#8230; PS: this is your resume for people you#8217;re convincing to take your advice. Thanks a lot for doctoral dissertations musicology this great article !. Where can i find a clear picture of the example shown in advice number 3.) Objective statement ? Thanks for the advice. The above are very handy. Purpose! Should I even mention my PhD when applying for industry jobs?

Sorry, it sounds like a stupid question, but sometimes I feel it quite awkward and out of place given that my PhD topic is doctoral, totally unrelated to many of the jobs I apply for character report anyway. Doctoral Dissertations Musicology! Excellent advice. Any chance the #8220;After#8221; template is available for download somewhere? Are there any examples of how a resume should look like for recently graduated PhD? Im curious, because I just don#8217;t know what to include in discursive essay for ielts my resume if my publications does not matter (not that I have that many)? I only have education and in my country a PhD is considered as work.

Also, in my resume I have a section called key skills mentioning things like software, lab equipment etc. My PhD has been more of engineering type of musicology work. I have been developing an optical sensor. I would prefer to go to industry now. so I am trying to increase my chances. Agree Qualify Essay! Really enjoy reading your posts. Keep up the great work! I do not question your suggestion in point #8 to remove publications from a resume.

However, a first author publication on a resume shows successful teamwork, strong communication skills, and conclusive results! It would seem to doctoral dissertations, me that those are exactly the qualities that companies would be looking for in prospective candidates. Can you explain why these qualities should be devalued? Suggestion for publications: just put a link to your MyNCBI publication list at the bottom of of research your resume. This will not eat up more than two lines of space. If a potential employer is doctoral musicology, really interested in you and your work, then everything that you#8217;ve done is there. Excellent advice. Anybody have an existing LaTeX template that is laid out according to these principles? These articles make me nauseous; not because they are untrue, but because they are very true.

Just sad when even a PhD in a complete #8216;nerd#8217; position has to good, impress the former clothing sales girl with ADD, then the bean counter who needs to know how much money you can save the corporation. Doctoral Dissertations Musicology! If you#8217;re applying for a PR/marketing or finance position then fine, but seriously#8230; Does nobody care that #8216;getting hired#8217; is essay, now the dissertations musicology, primary skill in today#8217;s job market? Could this conceivably not end well? In fact it already is. PS- also not knocking your advice, but on every page an expert offers a different take; case in point the photo on a resume. Agree. I#8217;m not a PhD but a writer.

I have taken a hint from the resumes of software engineers I#8217;ve worked with in diversity in classroom tech. Doctoral Musicology! Write for the person who understands the skills you bring, and try to get to that person directly. As an industry RD hiring manager (currently hiring), this article frustrates me quite a bit. In my scan of resumes, one of the first things I look at is the dates of your education and work experience so I can understand your career path, and right after that I want to look at your publications. I don#8217;t want to hear how you got a $1M grant, I want to know that you were able to get a high quality scientific publication published because that was the primary output of your PhD. While I agree that industry hiring managers are looking for specific things and some of this post I agree with, I think some is plain bad advice.

The biggest thing I want in your resume is clarity I want to see every major accomplishment in purpose of research proposal your career so far, including publications, as quickly and clearly as possible. Thank you Yvar! I#8217;m currently looking for jobs and doctoral dissertations musicology, I was debating on if I should list my publication records (which is very good) on my CV or not. And I saw this article, and I was so frustrated because I believe somebody who did their job well in discursive essay for ielts his previous position is more likely to do their next job well. Even that the publication record shouldn#8217;t mean everything, it should mean something. It#8217;s a representation of what you have achieved and what you are capable of musicology as a Ph.D. or researcher. I#8217;m glad that as a hiring manager you think the same, that gives me quite a lot encouragement #128578; Hi, I am a recent PhD graduate and agree disagree, actively looking for an industry job, though not really successful! I am looking for dissertations musicology a professional Resume writer to discursive for ielts, help me with re-construct my industry CV. Anyone here has a suggestion where I can find one? Amazon com: Doctoral Dissertations in Musicology (9789996568688

Category Archives: Spiritual Essays. It has been a long running debate for me and for doctoral dissertations, others. God or the Macrocosmic Omniverse is the Three-Omni’s: Omniscient (all-knowing); Omnipotent (all-powerful); Omnipresent (everywhere-at-once). Being all knowing means no room for structure, fear; no fear results in doctoral dissertations, no emotion born from fear such as anger, vengeance, vanity, sadness, hatred, prejudice, being judgmental, etc.; no emotional sense because of surpassing the need for emotion and surpassing need in diversity essay, general as well as wants. All-powerful coincides with being all-knowing. Knowing all is an important way to doctoral dissertations musicology be all-powerful. Having all knowledge of all possibilities and probabilities, having all knowledge of all Universes as well as the parallel Universes which are infinite and of all dimensions and purpose of research planes of possible existence which is where any energy resides means having all-knowledge of the experiences of any kind of energy and doctoral musicology thus, every type of being from quantum to the multiverse, from microbe to blue whale, from agree disagree qualify essay, cell to planet, from bacteria to elephant, from amoeba to chimpanzee, from insect to the human genius of Einstein or of doctoral musicology DaVinci…. From human genius to alien-yet-Unknown-to-us genius. This All-powerful beingness which coincides with being All-knowing means knowledge surpassing any system smaller than itself which does not have Omniscience over its limit.

And any system that is within another system has physical limits let alone energetic/spiritual/subtle limits. A system which is disagree qualify essay, physical is within time and space so has a beginning and an end, and doctoral musicology has mass. Being within time and space means having to be governed by time and space. God-Omniverse is Omnipresent which means not being governed by time and space, and thus, mass. It is transcendent, it is beyond.

One that is all-powerful cannot be housed within another larger system because it surpasses mass, size, time and space. This Being has no limit, physical or otherwise so the skin of each human, the dahlia essay, tissue of any type of animal or organ inside any animal; all the way pass cells, atoms, electrons and protons, quanta, Strings does not limit it but it surpasses these physical boundaries; thus, it is omnipresent. Can something be Omnipresent and not be Omnipotent? Can something be omnipotent and not be omnipresent? No. Can something be omnipotent and doctoral dissertations musicology not be omniscient? How about being omniscient but not omnipotent nor omnipresent?

No. Disagree Essay? Being all-knowing includes being all-powerful and being everywhere-at-once … and one cannot be had without the doctoral, grouping of the Three-Omnis’. And only God-Omniverse is the Three-Omnis’. Emotion is energy expressed through the human CNS system. The less one knows about itself and in classroom essay the world results in more erratic emotion. This energy is positive (fast vibrating and doctoral musicology high frequenced) and negative (slow vibrating and low frequenced)….. Are both types of energy, energy? Yes. All energy is of the Omniverse and of time-space. The Omniverse is not an emotion; however, through one emotion we, time-space Beings, do vibrate fastest and operate on character first grade the highest frequency. Being at this vibration and doctoral musicology frequency results in character report first, the feeling of Love.

God is all energy expressions but not one kind inside of it. So God neither is Hatred or feels hatred. God neither is Love or feels Love. If God is Love, then God could be hatred as well…. If God feels anything then God also must be human….

And if God is human, then GOd cannot be everywhere at once….. If God isn’t everywhere at once, then God cannot be all-power-all-powerful…. If God isn’t all-power-all-powerful, then God cannot be all-knowing… Thus, feeling positives and dissertations negatives results from not knowing enough. When one does not know enough, there is power that is lost and that cannot be contained. Having less power, thus less knowledge means a deficit in expansiveness or the only way a human being can be everywhere at once, empathy. More empathy for another human being means having more knowledge and thus, more power. The more knowledge and the more power means more empathy or expansiveness.

The world around us as we scan with our eyes, feel with our hands, smell with our nose, taste with our tongues, and listen with our ears seems so concrete, so physical, so real. But… What is real? People are immersed in their senses and in this day-in-age, cannot seem to be still enough to become aware of the people, the nature, the elements of their environments that are so perfectly inputted by the central nervous system in full 3d, sensory input, and living color. Why? We live in our heads, in of research, our Consciousness and get swept up and doctoral sometimes hopelessly lost in our experiences with the world and relationships. Essay? We are born so trusting, loving, happy with ready smiles, and gurgling responses to being talked to by our parents. Then at a certain age, sixteen or maybe twenty-one, something changes. We see the doctoral dissertations, blaring mistakes our parents made; we become aware of what those childhood experiences have manifested in agree essay, how we relate to the world and ourselves, what characteristics have come about because the seeds were planted in childhood minds.

Some try hard to overcome obstacles, and become self-aware enough to work on all those psychic scars that hold us back or keep us in the dark. Doctoral? We plummet or we rise; and rise only to plummet again. If empathy for the guy on the street or for the family rendered homeless after a hurricane hasn’t developed, the state of mind develops that hasn’t been a big part of who we were since toddlerhood – called egocentrism. But when we aren’t toddlers in an appropriate developmental stage, I prefer to refer to in classroom it as Egoism….. People locked in the stage could be labeled Egoists. (I don’t prefer labels but for illustration, they need to dissertations musicology be used.) Egoists are locked on the Western culture’s mantra of striving for material gain in first, order to be on doctoral dissertations top or to discursive even have worth. Their world often struggles to musicology expand beyond the eyelashes and if it does, it only includes family members that are currently on their good side. Work is their primary world since time is mostly spent their. They “arrived” but once they arrived, they realized their were more stairs to climb and raises and promotions to obtain. Egoists strive for external power through collecting material items to agree qualify try to fill themselves up and musicology thus, feed their egos.

Once they obtain the great vehicle, they feel high, powerful but then the feeling deflates until the more expensive flashier car is obtained. External power doesn’t last, can be stolen, can be taken by repo, borrowed, destroyed through accidents or on purpose purpose, exchanged, coveted. Does real power result in all of the above? The Egoist drowns in doctoral dissertations, their dramas. The world is concrete in their eyes so everything negative is character report, earth shattering, mind numbing, depression reinforcing. So in this negativity external power is sought even more heavily….

Addictions develop, mental illnesses develop or worsens, a frenzy of buying happens, cheating on significant others or rampant promiscuity increases. The person seems to be on a collision course as reaching for external power creates more dysfunction and musicology stress. What once fulfilled the Ego even a little no longer fills anything in that emptiness inside. Purpose Of Research? They suffer midlife crisises where they swear everything outside themselves are causing their psychic pain so families split up because the spouse is blamed for their own inadequecies, impulsive picking-up-and-moving takes place, careers are dropped for new ones that lead eventually to the same paradigm, new places to live are sought, unaffordable pick-ticket items are purchased. Why? To fill emptiness, that persistent void, that festering wound given band-aides to doctoral musicology cover up but they never heal so alcohol is disagree qualify, dumped on it, substances are sprinkled on it, ever newer models of spouses or cars are given to pay it homage to pacify it, or prescriptions are tried and all fail. Perceptions control how we sense our world, what we focus on, how we react to everything outside of us… or seemingly, outside of us. First, the Egoism must be addressed which isn’t easy in a society that feeds off of consumerism. Empathy must develop.

How? Understanding that you are deeply and irrevocably interconnected to all Life. What happens to others, how you treat them affects you even if your senses are muddled and there is a lack of emotional/psychic awareness of these affects. Understanding how you treat others, even yourself comes back around by law of dissertations Karma. Understanding that you are a Spiritual, non-physical Being within a Collective that is so powerful as to qualify essay project what is sensed to be such a solid concrete world in something similar to dissertations musicology a Hologram or Holographic.

The concrete world isn’t concrete. It is densely formed, packed energy that actually is character, mostly empty space. The Strings of oscillating energy is t of time and doctoral space. Time and space are illusions just as the forms and configurations of light we call physical are Illusions. What our CNS’ tell us is real is something entirely different, more spectacular and mysterious than can be imagined. What we experience is directly created by the CNS, by the Mind. Points of light are translated into the essences of what we see, hear, touch, smell and taste. Then our Minds configure the rest, enlisting value here or there, enlisting judgments, rationalizing, comparing input with old input, and perceiving our relationships to others, to nature, and to ourselves.

Most are on autopilot because what we like, and dislike, what we perceive as normal or abnormal is of research, learned out of awareness and based on what we were taught or not taught as very young humans, and that is based on musicology our cultures and societies. Character Book Report? Narrow mindedness usually comes from very narrow experiences. Our individual dramas and our baggage that we carry around on dissertations musicology our backs as heavy burdens that affect what we perceive of the world and other people is the book report first grade, result of forgetting or not realizing it is all Illusory. How we think it is, really isn’t and doctoral usually more complicated and more impersonal than how closely we allow it all to harm us. Reaching For Nirvana, Akashic Field from the Room. I decided long ago, years in fact, not to divulge what took place during a hideously, suffering time for me. The event would forever change me and what I knew about qualify reality. And I literally would try to tell people about what happened but I would give up each time because I couldn’t find the words and could not speak. I tried to write it out soon after it happened but my pen wouldn’t move and doctoral dissertations the thoughts would not form in my mind right before being translated on the page. I knew it was because I wasn’t meant to speak about it to character book report grade the people I tried to explain the musicology, Experience to. It wasn’t the time to divulge the information of the Experience back then.

I was eighteen years old when it happened, two decades plus years ago yet it is like it happened hours ago. I can conjure up the essay structure, images of the Experience so easily today yet I can’t tell you what I had for doctoral, dinner last night. Of Research Proposal? Maybe it is because every day since then I thought about dissertations musicology it. I prayed to God a lot around eighteen. I suffered from agree disagree essay, The Dark Night of the Soul, which I later named that period of my life because I could see the full picture. The Dark Night of the Soul is like traveling through the fires of doctoral dissertations Hell right before the black clouds part, and Light spills forth illuminating everything. Even more is revealed than the initial questions that were cried out good catholic, when the dissertations, torment turned the face red, choked the breath out, squeezed the chest muscles around the vacinity of the heart to the point you wondered if a heart attack was at agree essay, work, made the stomach tie up in tight knots, and doctoral dissertations musicology cried so hard dehydration set in, and purpose proposal the face muscles hurt and the eyes were too swollen to open.

The type of torment where it feels so painful that you suspect it could kill you if it lasts a moment longer. The suffering was so tormenting and doctoral dissertations so deep and felt for agree disagree qualify, way too long that perhaps the Omniverse shifts for revelation. Perhaps suffering causes the dissertations, painful, initial opening of the of research proposal, third eye which lasts until it is completely opened in the way it was meant to for this incarnation. The opening of the third eye causes the person to see with the 6th Sense and transforms the person into what Gary Zukav calls multi-sensory. One underlying aspect of Existence must first be remembered before it is given fuel to cultivate and grow inside yourself…. #?1 ???????? There is only Energy. What does that mean? – In trying to navigate existence and in trying figure out what actions to have, what intentions to grow, what choices to make, what thoughts to doctoral dissertations musicology have, figure out if it is of Light or of essay Darkness. How? – When anything is dissertations, of Light, it is of Love and forms derived of Love.

Another word to describe Love is Positivity. Report? It increases well being both in the Energetic forms of the Physical i.e. health, high immune system, brain and central nervous system health, which feeds emotional and psychological health; and in the Energetic forms of Consciousness or Spirit which increases the vibration and frequency of personal Energetic form and that in turn reaches out changing the overal frequency and vibration of the Collective Senient Consciousness. Your Energetic/Consciousness affects not only doctoral dissertations, your Life but all Life around you such as the person you are intimate with, your children, your family circle, your friends, your co-workers, your neighborhood and community, your town or city, your state, your country and beyond. It is never Just You. All of Existence, all of Life is interconnected.

Existence and life are forms of diversity in classroom essay Energy. There is doctoral dissertations musicology, no real space or time. Essay? Energetic forms fill in all gaps or space perceived by the five senses. If it is insulting and if it makes you feel like insulting, you are operating on a low frequency and slow vibration. So why feel insulted and reflect back that energy by feeling like insulting someone, or a group of people that are erroneously judged alike? Neither the one who insults first nor the one who decides to insult back in response are operating at a high frequency or a fast vibration. By fueling this form of Energy, you are hurting yourself and doctoral dissertations those around you. So is dahlia essay, it right or wrong? Problems with right and doctoral dissertations musicology wrong judgments – they are highly personal judgments.

Could anything be right or wrong? Better descriptive words would be, Negative or Positive. Positive increases Light and Love forms. Negativity decreases Light morphing it into Fear forms. Positivity is purpose proposal, pro-Existence. Negativity is doctoral dissertations musicology, anti-Existence.

People who intend harm would say not insulting when feeling insulted is wrong and insulting when feeling insulted is right. People tend to be Egocentric until they develop self-awareness, and self-control. When love is experienced that is real love not lust or neediness, it is hard to prevent this revelation from flowing outward into all of reality. When negativity is experienced during one’s upbringing and it is the first experiences a young life becomes aware of, the result of those harsh lessons mold and black dahlia shape the emergence of their personality at doctoral dissertations, its core. It becomes harder for in classroom, this person to become self-aware and see clearly other people around them because the lenses they view life through is various degrees of murky. The harsher the lessons dealt a young emerging life, the murkier the lenses may become. So if it is musicology, insulting, question your assessment first. Does the topic automatically tend to make your feel defensive? Does your past experiences put you on high alert to any words that could be interpreted as negative when the grade, person saying these words is someone who in general does not act in hurtful ways intentionally toward you or anyone? Topics that make you defensive should be something to become aware of so when you feel defensive toward someone who doesn’t mean harm, you can practice self-control. Doctoral? In response, you choose words carefully so you don’t become the person you are against while under the illusion that you are righteous and standing up to oppressive thinking.

In that case, while trying to essay rally against oppression, you become that which you are trying to rally against thus adding to the energy of oppression in general. Those who are against oppression usually do not act oppressively. Those who are against prejudice usually do not think or act in prejudice. Instead, a positive intention and choice is doctoral dissertations, expressed. Otherwise, one who is against prejudice but acts and think with prejudice would be a contradiction. Discursive Structure? Why consciously choose to be a contradiction? Why is it so up front inside my mind right now? I couldn’t say. Our culture right now and since the beginning of humanity have been very race-centric.

Heavy boundaries drawn from musicology, person to person, city to city, country to country. Are you of Irish descent but haven’t had anyone in your ancestry born in Ireland since the 1300s? What makes you Irish? Are you African-American but haven’t had anyone in your ancestry born in good catholic, Africa since several centuries? Russian ancestry? Romanian?

Italian? Spanish (non-Mexican, non-South American)? French ancestry? This is Nationalism, Continent-ism… In many African countries, there is doctoral dissertations, tribalism. Outsiders cannot tell if one African from one African country is from a different tribe than another but the members of these tribes do. Diversity? Note: The genocide of the doctoral musicology, Tutsi. Does any tribe in black, any African nation see American-born, several generations past as an African-American or kin in the least? The killing of the Tutsi was fed by religious fanatics but they did not go up to doctoral dissertations each Tutsi and agree essay ask if they were Catholics or not…. They saw they were members of this tribe and slaughtered them. Why do I bring this up?

Identification with created cultural constructs serve to further divide what is undividable. Division gives fuel to fear, fear breeds anger, anger breeds hatred, hatred breeds prejudice and racism. Focus on the physical breeds superficiality. Doctoral? Emphasis on the body as being the base of who you are must be renewed constantly as the body is renewed. Physical perceptions are misguiding. Diversity is in the individual, from dahlia, individual to individual and doctoral musicology each person’s relative truth. Point: love the essay catholic, diversity but emphasize the undividable connection of doctoral Consciousness inside One, All-that-is; inside One, Omniverse; inside One, God. And all that life connectivity, unity is agree, ignored for what? I am you; and you are me. A monkey looking into a mirror only doctoral dissertations, sees another monkey. If you have not emphasized your point of view, your self-awareness to your Spirit, your Higher Self in your lifetime and expanded your world view to Omni-view (all-view), fear still divides….

Fear still angers… And anger leads to a pain transferred inside to outside. Being Challenged and discursive structure Reflecting Back. A mystic, Onaleya, sat on a gilded chair with velvet cushion. Doctoral Dissertations Musicology? The brass of the chair was made to look like gold. She wore a white dress. The fabric was light and airy like chiffon over proposal, silk.

Her blonde hair was a long ornate braid draped over her shoulder. The length of the braid extended down to musicology the end of her seated torso lightly brushing her lap. Her eyes were closed but her eyelashes vibrated revealing once in essay catholic girls, awhile a sliver of the whites of her eyes. Her form was rigid and straight at her spine, her arms rested on the gilded velvet padded arms of the chair, unmoving. The audience sat in silence watching this tall, young, and fair mystic in trance. The process of entering trance seemed drawn out musicology, however, all of us fifty-something in the audience watched with anticipation. The audience was encouraged to enter into meditation and visualize silver, sparkling streams of light flowing from each person to Onaleya. “I am ready,” spoke Onaleya in a deeper tone and an accent. “Thank you to All incarnated Consciousnesses here tonight,” her head moved from side to side but her body remained a statue. Her eyes were wide and unblinking, her startling bluish-violet eyes a shade of essay color that was startling and seemed to possess an inner glow. Everyone here is a Seeker.

In your eyes, I see such beauty yet also the shadow that reflects your suffering in this physical realm, the material illusion….” “I am Consciousness as each of doctoral musicology you are, however, I am a teacher and do not reside in the material and do not have a physical form as each of you have a physical form. I exist in the subtle, the energetic spiritual that is everywhere and yet no where, and which is purpose proposal, paired so closely with this place and doctoral dissertations musicology is more real to my senses than the material illusion that is more real to your physical senses ruled by your central nervous systems….. “…. Structure? The veil has been pulled over your eyes and doctoral musicology that filter makes everyone almost blind to where they actually are as opposed to where the structure, physical senses tell them they are…. “… Your real home is in Spirit, Consciousness, God, Universe and Omniverse known with many names. Musicology? Your physical senses feed perceptions and structure is the cause of why you suffer. You are restless for doctoral dissertations, knowledge because each of you possess this knowledge inside and character report first you know it, however, the polarity of this realm naturally cause forgetting”, she spoke methodically and slow as if she had pain in her mouth and each word was being pulled with difficulty out of her mouth…. “You don’t have to doctoral suffer so, my Children”, she spoke with a lyrical and slightly European accent, “We all must know who we are and qualify essay then life will have a purity of meaning it could never have otherwise. When I say ‘who’ I also mean ‘what’. Is who we are defined by people from the past who have defined and categorized human beings in ‘races’? What if you had no ‘race’ or a loosely defined ‘race’ that was a unique make up of musicology several races?

What or who would you be then? Once you peel back the layers of disagree qualify essay how others define you in doctoral musicology, the present and would have been defined in the past by disagree qualify others, who or what are then?” “… Many people would dismiss these questions or be completely stumped. My friend defines herself when asked who and musicology what is she as a Native American/Spanish American (mother side)/African/European/Chinese (Father’s side). Her grandfather was African/European American on dahlia her dad’s side. Her grandma on her dad’s side was Chinese/European American. Is she the sum of her ancestry?

She is going to marry a man who is doctoral musicology, Russia/Indian/ European. When they have children and her children are asked who and what they are, what would they say? When her children have children by men and disagree qualify essay women of various races and ethnicities, what will they answer when asked the same question? When my friend has great grandchildren, what will they answer?” “… How far do you need to go back in time in order to categorize yourself as accurately as possible? Or maybe like some say, none of doctoral dissertations musicology that matters in defining who and essay what you are.

They might say people of a society and how they treat you and where they categorize you, is who you are. Does that sound fair?… ” “… Should other people while using their limited 5-senses and who really don’t know you as an individual because they long have passed to the grave be the almighty ones who define you? And what of dissertations past lives? Each of us have reincarnated so many times into purpose proposal different physical beings with various labels. In truth, we have each been countless times a Man or a Woman, African-American, Native American, Chinese, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Aborigine of Brazil and other places, Roman, Greek, Jewish, German, Asian-American, Ancient Gaelic, and doctoral dissertations others. Another important point is Nationality does not equal Race. If it truly did, every human being originated from Africa regardless of what they ended up looking like in good, the far distant future…..” “… The number one cause of suffering in the world is ‘You don’t know who you are.’ Your body is reborn each year. Every cell of each organ has been replicated after a year. If you are your body and dissertations thus, the race label thrust upon you by a fearful hiearchal world, which body are you referring to?

It will be different tomorrow and sometimes will be different in a blink of an eye if there is an disagree qualify essay accident that is doctoral, experienced…. ” “… When you look beyond what your five senses tell you and the organization of the world, you will see with multiple senses and character report first know one important aspect of yourself and all who are around you. Doctoral? You are Energetic, Spiritual, Consciousness which your body is inside. Your Soul is so powerful that it cannot be caged inside a puny physical body that vibrates so slow and catholic operates at a low frequency…” “…. Doctoral Dissertations Musicology? This is the state of the world and the physical. It is dense energy that vibrated slow and character book report first grade operates at a low frequency. Doctoral Musicology? Physical senses alone vibrates at a slow rate and operates at a low frequency. The Fear that spills forth from the human condition stems from this blinded sight and vibrates slow and has a low frequency.

Fights inside the Mind or outside focused on others is a reflection of the Fear that limited sight delivers and essay good catholic is drawn to. Dissertations? Consciousness inside, throughout, and outside the body has a choice to of research proposal allow its energy to rise above. This means a faster efficient vibration and a high frequency operating through the density of matter that is the world and each human central nervous system…” “… The result of listening to your Consciousness/Higher Self while in this physical world is Love and all its reflections such as compassion, joy, understanding, being friendly, happiness, peace, calm, and so many others.. Why? Unlike fear and all its reflections such as anger, confusion, jealousy, anxiety, panic, betrayal, selfishness, malevalence, feeling violent, bad temper, rage and others, Love and its reflections vibrate fast and is high frequency. Doctoral Dissertations? This is how Spirit operates in the world, through Love and its expressions.

It comes through us and how open our sight is and how far it has come from its base emotions stemming from Fear….” “… All categorizations, labels, hiearchal judgements made by humanity against in classroom, itself are actions stemming from a fear motivation, thus limited sight, thus vibrates slowly and has a low frequency. Fear at its various degrees prevents intelligence from musicology, blooming from the brain out into dahlia essay the world to operate during experiences in life. When Fear reigns the whole person and the person’s individual circumstances are affected….” “… Low frequency and slow vibration operations causes depleted immune systems, memory problems so issues retaining information which results in doctoral musicology, lower I.Q.s, lower I.Q.s means less understanding of self and the world, less understanding of Self and the world means a strengthening of Fear deepening it so that the energy becomes slower vibrating and has a lower frequency. Dahlia Essay? This in turn causes a worsening state until the human condition is so ravaged that humanity commits murder and dissertations musicology other crimes against humanity…. Essay Good? The perpetrator of crime against humanity is the most Fearful and the one who least knows himself at all. He commits crime against himself when he believes he commits crime against others… ” A man shot up from his seat and doctoral dissertations pointed a finger. “Are you saying I shouldn’t be proud of what race I am?” Spit sprayed from his mouth and his eyes looked red. “… Being proud is an emotion born from wanting to feel superior, and feeling superior is grade, born from Fear. Feeling inferior is born from Fear which then causes one to seek superiority which means they must look down on others in order to doctoral keep feeling superior. Superiority feelings cannot be superiority feeling unless it first was once inferior feeling. It goes hand in hand. What physical being is higher than humanity on dahlia Earth?

Higher meaning self aware, intelligent, creative, able to discover and learn and doctoral dissertations create from there. Agree Disagree Qualify Essay? No other being. Is a human more human than other humans? No. “… People can believe that there are types of humans who are of various hierarchies and that is make-believe that stems from the most fearful. Doctoral? When any perceived counter idea is heard regarding that which is held proudly, an offense is agree qualify essay, all that is heard and the Fear that created the coveted feeling and where it appeared to come from in the world morphs into doctoral anger. The anger is there because there is a wish to make someone inferior so the one who is angry can restore his pride and sense of superiority. One constantly feels the need to make himself feel superior by trying to make others be submissive. It is a false superiority because if he really felt powerful, there would be no need to try to take other people’s power. Inferiority and superiority are both the same energy…” “That does not answer the essay good catholic, question,” the dissertations, man yelled.

“What did you hear, Kevin?” Onaleya asked. “I heard you say I shouldn’t be proud and by being proud, I am deficient,” he responded. “How did you know my name?” “Anger seeks support for its duration. Black Dahlia Essay? Anger hears and sees what it wishes to hear and see. Anger is fear’s disguise. Kevin is musicology, angry and thus fearful. Feel no shame. Time separates everyone else’s same feelings of essay structure anger and fear and shame when fear is doctoral dissertations musicology, stripped from essay good, its disguise.

Who and what Kevin truly is Spirit Energy, Consciousness, Soul is not fearful. Kevin like many cling to doctoral dissertations an outer identity that inherently is confused. Consciousness is like what feeds its electricity into Kevin and Kevin’s body, fuels it, expands it with life and essay girls also surrenders this part of itself to a slower vibration and a lower frequency resulting in a type of doctoral awareness called Ego-Personality. Of Research? It is so with each physically living sentient being in doctoral musicology, the Universes…” “There is essay, a far deeper richness in life that results in the cultivation of realizing you are so much more than your body and deeper and doctoral musicology more expansive than your appearance, your judgment of your appearance, and agree disagree qualify the judgment of others toward your appearance which influences how you judge yourself. A fearful hiearchal society with ever expanding numbers of doctoral dissertations musicology people cannot and is not Conscious enough nor blessed with wisdom enough to in and of itself give any individual an accurate reflection of essay structure for ielts him or herself….. “The struggle then becomes a process of identifying what comes from fear and what that fear has caused to develop in your own Ego AND what Love and what that Love has caused to develop and realize about doctoral musicology your existence. Often people will find very, high contrasting lessons.

One lesson has taught a focus on the physical and superficiality of Ego, separation and contrast and discursive for ielts the second lesson has taught a focus on Consciousness, Spirit, God, deep connection, Unity. One lesson causes Egocentrism, Racism, prejudice, and if fed to various extremes leads to dissertations musicology crimes against humanity such as assault, murder, rape, injustice, war, genocide. Discursive Structure? The other lesson causes Altruism, Selflessness, harmony, charity, peace, wisdom, acceptance, calm, empathy, Unity across imagined boundaries…” “Which lesson do you wish to learn and cultivate in yourself?” “Which lesson do you wish to add your Energy and doctoral musicology Intention to? 1: Fear – Egocentrism, Racism, prejudice, ignorance, injustice, crime against humanity, murder, rape, war and gencodie which increased the lowering of frequency and the slowing of essay energetic vibration of Collective Sentient Consciousness or in other words, support of all that Fear brings….; 2: Love – Altruism, Selflessness, harmony, charity, empathy, Connection and doctoral dissertations Unity, understanding which leads to an increase in knowledge and wisdom which then leads to a higher frequency and an increase in the rate of energetic of vibration.

In the Christian religion, Christ is the focus or should be the black dahlia, focus, right? But why isn’t Christ’s teachings the dissertations, focus rather than Christ himself? It is a form of idiolatry to spend so much time on Jesus’ celebrity rather than why Jesus became a celebrity. Did he just walk around smiling? No, he was a teacher. A Professor in qualify, a college who teaches philosophy and is charismatic perhaps would not appreciate his students focusing on him instead of what he was teaching. It is just like modern humanity to praise the famous. Dissertations? TV and movies focus on the image of the Star. The college Professor more than likely doesn’t want his students to focus on who he is but rather on what he is purpose of research, teaching. He wants the students to remember the teachings years after. In ancient times of Christ, there were no photographs, movies, TV shows, magazines.

People heard about the teachings and sought him out and I doubt the people relaying the information described what he looked like. They probably said something about doctoral dissertations musicology his wisdom. If Christ was a modern phenom, people obsessed with the “who” probably would set aside what he was saying. Buddha also in a lot of ways became the agree disagree qualify essay, focus. Doctoral Dissertations? Statues of Buddha are rubbed for luck. In Classroom? There are elaborate parades with the doctoral musicology, procession of Siddhartha’s tooth.

People believe it holds magical powers. But Buddha wanted others to seek enlightenment and to take the path he took. However statues are given offerings of food and other things. Essay? Giant statues of dissertations Buddha made to look like gold are in different t places in China for instance. In Christianity, Saints are given high status.

Monastaries that possess on the premises the bones and of research popular priests and saints are visited by pilgrims who wish to touch the bone relic usually in an ornate case in order to be blessed with good luck, health or have their prayers answered. When someone has a pearl of wisdom and doctoral dissertations musicology that someone has been judged harshly, negatively in some way, do we forget the pearl of wisdom until someone who is revered, famous, viewed as brilliant comes along and says the exact same thing word-for-word? Was the person the focus or was what had been said the character grade, focus? Without the wisdom, Christ and Buddha along with all the others would not be revered as they are. So why is the musicology, person worshipped and the wisdom all but forgotten and not practiced? Why do people believe it is enough to worship Christ, Buddha (in the form of a statue), etc.? As long as you worship them, you are good?

Why not follow the purpose, teachings? Why not focus on the teachings? I cannot bring their consciousness into my lungs and then breathe out wisdom. I cannot worship until the snakes I’m holding refuse to bite and their venom if I am bit is as base as water. But others believe it. They don’t even follow the doctoral dissertations, teachings or really know them but they proclaim Christ is in their heart and they are thus born again and in classroom that is all that matters. Go to Church every Sunday and bring their injection of doctoral musicology coffee to prevent dozing off during the black, Sermon, and go home, cuss at the kids for the slightest infringement chosen for that day, consume several cans of beer in front of the Tube, yell at and disrespect their wives and sleep easy at doctoral musicology, night knowing they went to church and thus, all is well. People can act a good act, talk like the other worshippers and be as hollow as an automaton. Reminds me of a long stemmed, silk daisy planted outside in the soil… Not matter how much you water it and dahlia give it sunlight, no growth ever takes place. No one should allow killing other people.

People of doctoral dissertations musicology any race can relate to the suffering of good catholic girls people of doctoral dissertations musicology any race. How can anyone completely understand the black essay, experience of the actual family members (regardless of race) who lost a loved one do to violence perpetuated by people (regardless of race) who have been entrusted with the protection of the public? People who see very thick lines separating each person wrongly conclude those lines actually exist. Dissertations Musicology? A racist officer who kills another person based on how the officer perceives that person based on appearance more than likely see great-gaping lines/boundaries separating himself and the one he is perceiving. If we didn’t have such perceived boundaries separating this person or that person with their individual grouping of characteristics from ourselves, wouldn’t we as humanity be less able to commit acts of violence against black essay, others because of how they differ from musicology, us? “…. whites in general don’t feel our pain, it’s not happening to them….” writes George ….. This is an over generalization drowning in prejudice. I see other HUMAN BEINGS suffering in many different ways on purpose the news and I can relate to them because they’re suffering in a human way and not in dissertations musicology, an alien/non-human way. If I see someone who appears to be of my same race, gender, sex, culture, nationality suffering a loss of a loved one do to character book report grade violence, I don’t think “we are suffering….” and “… others who are not the same (race, gender, sex, culture, nationality) as us, the ones suffering on the news, cannot empathize along with the musicology, others who view themselves as belonging to the same category as the person suffering.” When I see another report on the news about first grade anyone being slaughtered unjustly (or so-called justly by some majority of doctoral dissertations people related to any category), I can and do empathize but I cannot in a heathy way decide another person’s individual experience of suffering in any group is also my own.

If I had an actual father, mother, son, daughter, grandchild, spouse, aunt, uncle, cousin or friend who was a victim of violence, I would be able to empathize in even a stronger way with others who suffered loss do to violence even if they were a part of of research a different category than the one I was placed in dissertations musicology, or the one I placed myself. How does taking on those negative feelings of suffering belonging to another person’s personal experience of loss and suffering only because that suffering person is identified as belonging to some arbitrary, label/category-of-person-type that I (and the majority of the involved culture) place myself, drawing a distinctive barrier/boundary around myself and essay catholic all others who identify the same way, make it helpful or positive in doctoral, my own existence or in the world of disagree essay humanity? Doesn’t taking on the suffering of another as my own, not because the same or similar thing that caused the doctoral dissertations, suffering for that person happened to agree disagree essay me but only because that person is perceived to belong to the same grouping (race, gender, sex, species, nationality, culture, political or religious affiliation, generation, age, etc.) of human that I belong to, almost belittle the magnitude of that person’s suffering? If you haven’t personally lost a loved one or a friend, or someone you actually knew as a result of violence, you cannot understand, comprehend, or fully realize the magnitude of suffering that results even if that person and that person’s family and friends (actually suffering that loss) belong to the same group of humanity. The “us and them” perception or mentality perpetuation no matter if you belong to the “us” or the “them” group is a part of the whole mentality that leads to people inflicting violence against “them” only dissertations musicology, because they are “them” and not “us.” When will we (humanity) realize, There is only “us”?

Acceptance of Diversity and Omni-Learning. I am watching “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.” An ex-member said that he was drawn to the church because he read that it’s goals were for purpose of research proposal, a world where there was no criminology, no insanity, etc. The one thing that now stands out for me is how this church like many advocates for dissertations musicology, total submergance within the church, one church with a total rejection of all other religions and philosophies, and “worldly” things. Why could anyone conceive that One Belief, One Church, One religion would be a good idea? How can One Belief, One Church, One Religion be at all without the black, total destruction of the human being, the human spirit, and the human civilizations of the world? And as if having One Set of Beliefs could happen in humanity. Why is doctoral musicology, diversity not seen as a beautiful characteristic of the human experience on a very large Earth with various histories? Omni- means “all.” Not just One. Essay? It includes “all” as they come, their organic Self inside their own culture which includes religion of choice and their own life experience as their relative truth/reality. Recognizing the “Omni-aspect” means acceptance and tolerance of “all” versions of relative truths/realities and the unique realization that the doctoral dissertations, “Omni-aspect” of humanity exists for everyone’s learning, evolution, unification in peace, and eventual awakening. There are no mistakes in the Universe.

Diversity of first humanity and each relative truth/reality exists for a purpose. It cannot be eradicated. Everything can be learned from, experienced, and doctoral with acceptance comes peace. An omni-Christian would be someone who goes to Christian church but realizes “God” (which is his name for disagree qualify, the Omniverse) who has created humanity as it is doctoral, with perfection and with the agree disagree essay, Absolute truth/reality-reasoning or purpose that only the Omniverse understands in its non-human, all-knowing way. The omni-Buddhist would be someone who’s Buddhist and follows everything Buddhist; however, accepts, loves, learns from the diversity of humanity. The primary idea is there is no rejection of others nor their learning. There is the doctoral musicology, idea of bringing people to justice if they commit crimes but there are no negative emotions nor thoughts directed toward someone who chooses to commit crime. Accepting that there are as many relative truths/realities as there are people on Earth (and anyone who have ever lived in the past) and loving that reality, allowing this aspect to purpose of research be and find peace, and as well, finding beauty there is the height of an individual’s reaction to doctoral the human experience as an aware Higher Self. Constant, Unparalleled Presence of Contradiction. Once Upon a time, there was a family whose patriarch, and whose patriarch before him was Christian.

Not a once a week, or once a year Christian but a full time one with evidence to back up the proclaimation. He had children young with a woman who was just as young. There was extended family as well. On the surface, there was a “Christian” attitude toward family members especially extended family. A strange phenom developed across the board. I don’t know about you but It seems rational, logical, not rude to show the same regard toward family members that you do for people you go to church with that you tend not to share the purpose of research, holidays with. In front of family members, you exercise the ability to be friendly toward non-family members so you can’t claim you are just not friendly and that is why you avoid or are rude to family, or pick and choose which members you are going to doctoral dissertations musicology accept and essay which ones you are going to deny the dissertations, experience of your Christian personality. Well, you can do what you will. What I am advocating for is equal treatment even when certain family members do not share your faith but accept you all the purpose, same.

I advocate for equal friendly treatment by ones who claim to follow Christ’s teachings especially. If you walk around with a label, and you then decide to act the opposite to what the label implies, but then judge those you are not acting friendly toward for not sharing your beliefs, don’t act surprised. What has happened probably for doctoral musicology, an extended period of time for some people is the experience of being treated in an unfriendly, hurtful, unfair way by people that place the label of Christian on themselves. So therefore by example, the essay, experience has taught them that following your faith has not taught you to distinguish yourself from the doctoral, many other people of the world by treating them in diversity in classroom essay, a friendly way. The result is a kind of dissertations repulse away from those things you seem to character book be vocal about. Unequal unfriendly treatment of people while exercising the ability to be friendly, believing in Christ’s teachings while picking and choosing who you reveal the friendliness that should result from doctoral dissertations, said teachings, is diversity in classroom, called contradiction. One is not perfect.

This is human. Being unaware of being a contradiction to some people is not rare but the dissertations, added judgment and rejection of people with whom you are treating in this contradictory way is only another layer of negativity no one in the world needs or should be subjected to. This goes quadruple for those family members who you don’t know at discursive essay for ielts, a personal enough level to even make judgments, and take other family members’ word for it who also do not know the judged family member at a deep enough level to make even marginally close assumptions of the judged family member’s character. Judgment period is doctoral dissertations musicology, also not that positive but such a common human characteristic. Let’s all be human, accept others as being only human, forgive ourselves and others for being only character report, human and doctoral musicology live and let learn.

Be the change you wish to in classroom essay see in the world. Going outward to doctoral change the world which you have no control over while forgetting completely about in classroom your own behavior and inner Being is counterproductive.

AMS—Doctoral Dissertations in Musicology

kurogane fai essay Meet me in the bathroom on the D hall in ten minutes. That is dissertations musicology what the text message said. He would obey, but why is he going? Why? was the reply. Kurogane quickly took a look around after sending the message to ensure that no one saw him, particularly not Mr. Hobbes, his nasty, brutish, and short history teacher. He hadn't.

Mr. Hobbes was still facing the board, lecturing diligently about John Locke and his impact on both European and character report grade, American history. Kurogane's phone vibrated quite loudly and musicology, as soon as he noticed, he coughed to black essay, cover it up, and swore in musicology, his head for not turning off the vibration. After he turned his phone on character report first silent, he read the reply, which was: It's a surprise! With quick, constant glances up to the front of the doctoral, classroom, Kurogane typed into a new message, After Hobbes is dahlia essay done lecturing? 15 minutes? and slipped the musicology, phone back into his pocket.

John Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding , his most famous work, advocates the idea that humans are not born with innate ideas. He thought that the tabula rasa, or blank slate, was written over time by experiences in of research proposal, one's life. Personally, I must disagree with Locke, and turn in favor of the doctoral dissertations, idea of proposal absolutism. Because humans are not born empty, we are born with the desire to have sex and dissertations musicology, hurt things, and first grade, thus, we should be controlled by one all-powerful ruler with unquestionable power, rather than giving our savage race liberal rights like life and liberty! Ugh! Yes, Syaoran? Not to doctoral dissertations, get into discursive for ielts an ideological debate, but in the case of an absolutist monarch, wouldn't the monarch also have the same inborn desires you say we all do? Which would mean, in my opinion, that he should not have dominion over the rest of his people in an oppressive hegemony to doctoral musicology, subdue the desires that you say every human, including him, is born with just because he happens to be in a position to do so. Kurogane quietly laughed along with the black, rest of the dissertations musicology, class at Syaoran's very intelligent observation and overturning of Hobbes's political theory before checking his phone for the next text message.

If we wait that long, we wont have time for the surprise! 6 minutes! Fine. Black Dahlia! Kurogane texted back. Mr. Hobbes scowled and dissertations, growled without really offering Syaoran a good opposing argument on agree essay that point, and continued to doctoral, teach. The next four minutes seemed to drag by report first grade as Hobbes wrapped up his lesson on Locke and the rest of the class took notes. Alright, class. As a special treat for our Enlightenment chapter, we are going to read a short book… he paused as the doctoral musicology, class groaned . called Candide, by Voltaire, who I will talk a little about as… Mr. Suwa passes out the paperbacks. A bit of panic struck Kurogane as his name was called because he had not been paying attention.

Please pass out black these books, Mr. Dissertations Musicology! Suwa? Mr. Hobbes repeated. Oh, actually, could someone else? I need to essay girls, use the restroom. Kurogane said, knowing that he wouldn't be on time for doctoral dissertations musicology, his meeting if he had to pass out books. When Mr.

Hobbes opened his mouth to protest, Kurogane went into acting mode. It's an emergency. he said standing up. Well, alright Mr. Suwa. Agree Qualify Essay! Please take the bathroom pass and leave before you make a mess.

Kurogane didn't hear anything else distinctively that went on in that classroom. He thought he heard Mr. Hobbes made Syaoran pass out the books. Regardless, all he cared about dissertations was getting to the D hall where he was called. Kurogane was on the opposite side of the agree qualify essay, school.

He sprinted when possible, only walking when someone else was on musicology the same hall as he. When he finally reached the qualify, D hall restroom facilities, he was half out of breath, partially from running, but mostly from anxiety. But, the long ten minute wait was over. Kurogane pushed open the door to reveal a long hall of stalls. Standing at musicology, the very end of the hall was who he had been expecting, the one who had summoned him. You're right on essay time, Kurgy, Fai said with a bit of mystery in his voice, as if he had called Kurgy, who was now walking toward him, for a mission. Yeah, I'm here. So what's this all about? Kurogane asked. Fai looked as if he was about to explode with excitement. Not the usual happy excitement that was seen by all on a daily basis, but a different sort.

What is musicology that look for? Kurogane asked. Fai just smiled mischievously and leaped into the last and biggest stall. Kurogane followed, but stopped short when Fai slammed the door shut behind them, locked it, and proceeded to essay good catholic girls, unbutton Kurogane's pants. Umm. Doctoral Dissertations! Kurogane started, rather calmly for discursive essay for ielts, what was happening to him. . what are you- Fai shushed him. I'm teaching you, Kuro-puu! Fai told Kurogane as he slowly pulled down Kurogane's pants and musicology, then proceeded to pull down his own. Do you know what class I was in purpose of research proposal, just now? he asked. Gym, Kurogane said simply, mentally patting himself on the back for remembering Fai's schedule. Yes, but we are in health this week, and we are in our Sex Ed. unit, Fai said, grabbing Kurogane's butt cheeks.

Kurogane fidgeted a little, since he didn't quite expect the doctoral dissertations, sudden grab. I told Mr. Sigmund that I was squeamish and agree disagree, that I didn't want to doctoral, see the video. And I don't, I told the truth about that! But I'm not at all squeamish about that kind of thing.

As soon as Fai was though speaking, he jerked down Kurogane's boxers and dove down toward Kurogane's manhood, and taking it all in at once. Kurogane made a weird noise. It was a gasp plus a moan, with a side of, Oh my gosh,. Fai only smiled and continued sucking Kurogane, whose knees were shaking. As Fai sucked more, Kurogane made more noise. Fai stopped, and essay, spit out Kurogane's penis, which stayed straight up right where he left it, so he could talk. Why'd you stop? Kurogane asked, a little irritated. Because, Kuro-patience, this is supposed to be a edumacational! I have to make sure you're learning!

Now, what is this? Fai questioned, referring the thing he just spit out. Even though he only doctoral dissertations musicology lightly touching it, Kurogane couldn't help but spit on Fai's hand. And not with his mouth, either. Essay! Fai giggled and licked it off. It's my penis, dumbass.

We both already know that. Hmm, naughty language doesn't get you any rewards! Next question, what are these? Kurogane let out the musicology, loudest moan he had in a while as he struggled to quickly answer through it, Testicles! Very good. Fai said, as he slowly went back for more. Character First! This time, his tongue took its sweet time licking through every single cell between Kurogane's legs, including his testicles. Doctoral Dissertations! Kurogane had been trying to discursive, hold back, but he couldn't take it anymore and dissertations, cried out as loud as he dared Fai's name. Of course Kurogane didn't want Fai to stop, but he did.

Perhaps Fai was done anyway, because he had another question. He stood up. Kurgy, do you know the proper term for the slang word, coming? Fai asked, without giving Kurogane a chance to answer. Fai grabbed Kurogane's butt while pushing it toward him and Fai also thrusting himself forward. Fai still had his boxers on, but it didn't matter to in classroom essay, Kurogane. He was practically in doctoral dissertations, heaven. Oh. Report First! these are a hinderance, aren't they? Fai commented, looking down toward his boxers and dissertations musicology, also to Kurogane's fat erection. Fai stepped back to remove the report grade, boxers, and threw them behind him. Then he thrust himself back to where he was before so Fai's manhood was smashed against Kurogane's.

That's better, Fai whispered as he grabbed Kurogane's face and launched forward to make out with him.
