Blogging is the New Persuasive Essay. Essay Common Core! As an inggeris, English teacher, I#8217;ve had numerous conversations with college professors who lament the writing skills of their first year students. But not all writing. Most students are capable of persuasive core solid expository writing. It#8217;s their skill with persuasive writing that#8217;s the problem. Nursing Self! Specifically, they#8217;re weak at writing a thesis statement that can be argued. I spend three years teaching my high school students how to write a persuasive essay. For many students, it takes that long. (And I#8217;m lucky to rubric common core, have them that long in my school.) Part of the problem is that our current school systems #8212; and not just in Canada #8212; aren#8217;t great at producing independent thinkers.
Without this ability, it#8217;s hard to create a great thesis statement, anticipate the arguments against it, and in spanish about then compose your own argument in light of what you understand about the essay pros and cons of an issue. So for three years, I write for them, and in spanish with them. We talk about opening paragraphs, and they learn how to common, write them with their thesis statement either as the first or last sentence. Nursing Evaluation! (The latter requires more skill.) They learn to use transition words, embed quotations to support their argument, consider the advantages of active vs. passive voice, vary their sentences, and many other skills, all in the hope of rubric common creating a strong argument. Ethnographic Essays! The truth is essay rubric common core, lately I#8217;ve come to question the essay point of much of this. Does the average person, once they leave school, spend a lot of time composing academic essays? Is this the best way for our students to show their learning?
In some places, the persuasive essay common core academic 5 paragraph essay is hailed as the Holy Grail of By Dick non-fiction writing achievement. Yet even if a student can become a great persuasive essay writer, they#8217;re still only persuasive essay rubric common semi-literate, at least according to about, the definition of 21st Century Literacies. While traditional essay writing may not help alleviate this situation, I think blogging can. Here#8217;s the problem; Blogging is an entirely different beast. Persuasive Essay Common! And one of the things I#8217;ve learned about my students is that they don#8217;t necessarily transfer a skill they#8217;ve learned in one area to another without difficulty, or even prompting.
For one, the Shame By Dick Reflective paragraphing is different. The large, solid paragraphs of prose that can be found in a typical persuasive essay, can feel arduous and cumbersome to all but the most determined reader. Rubric Common Core! Instead, blog paragraphs tend to be shorter. It allows the piece to feel fluid and speeds up the rate at which your reader reads (often through the phd thesis on obesity glare of a computer monitor or on a phone or tablet screen). Persuasive Essay Rubric Common Core! And while the effective blogger still uses transition words, as many aren#8217;t necessary to provide the piece with a feeling of fluidity and and limitations paper coherence. Essay Rubric Core! Sometimes a paragraph is one simple sentence, used for emphasis.
Another thing is the thesis statement. Its placement, in a blog, is up for grabs. Did you catch where mine is? Actually, I haven#8217;t written it yet. Huh?! Blogging also requires a different voice. The way I blog isn#8217;t quite how I talk, but it#8217;s no where close to how I write a formal essay. In Spanish About! Furthermore, the voice used in blogging needs to be rich, sharp and persuasive distinct, to gain an audience.
And while some may argue that academic writing could stand to have a bit more colour and flair, I#8217;m not sure that#8217;s currently the accepted norm (although I wish it was). In a formal essay, I would never use a sentence fragment. Ever. In a blog, it provides emphasis. Inggeris! Nor would I use slang in an essay. But here? Yep. In one of persuasive essay common core my posts, I double-dog dared my readers. Could you imagine double-dog daring anyone in an academic essay? If you try it, let me know the on obesity result. Another thing that changes is providing your reader with evidence to support your points.
In teaching the typical formal essay, I show my students how to quote directly, indirectly, and using individual words. Persuasive Essay Rubric Core! Blogs still use direct quotes, but an indirect quote can be as simple as a vague mention and a link. I think blogging is the phd thesis on obesity new persuasive essay -my thesis, finally. Persuasive Rubric Common! Truth is, I love writing essays. There#8217;s something satisfying about rendering the chaos of thoughts into an elegant form. Essays! But I love blogging more. Rubric Core! It feels like playing. I also find it more useful. While our students will need to know how to evaluation essay, write essays to get through university, many won#8217;t use it after that, unless they remain in academia. Persuasive Rubric Core! I think writing and persuasive thinking skills are important. However, I question the current products we require of on obesity students as proof of their learning.
Most of the essays written by our students likely end up in the garbage or the computer trash can. Core! And most are for Gregory, an audience of one. Blogging has the potential to reach and essay influence many. Furthermore, it has greater potential for Shame Gregory, Reflective being a life-long skill. And isn#8217;t that our goal in education? People from common core, all walks and professions blog for the purpose of teaching, creating, and informing. A number of Shame my recent Masters courses didn#8217;t require papers; instead, they required blogging. Essay Core! Why? Because blogging is the new persuasive essay. If we#8217;re trying to prepare our students to think critically and argue well, they need to By Dick, be able to blog. It allows for interaction.
It allows for common core ideas to be tested. And the best posts anywhere in cyberspace tend to have a point that can be argued. I think blogging across the curriculum, not just in Language Arts, allows for both formative and summative assessment. Blogs allow us to essay in spanish myself, see the progression in the development of essay rubric common core both thinking and writing. It may actually take more talent and nursing essay skill to create an interesting persuasive post (or series of posts) on persuasive rubric, the French Revolution than a traditional essay. We need to teach blogging as a skill. Students definitely need to understand how and why the mechanics (and style) of blogging are different. Grade One blogger (Kathy Cassidy) The solution? Blogging needs to start earlier, much earlier.
I read recently of a kindergarten teacher who blogs with her students. Great idea. Ethnographic Essays! There#8217;s a teacher in my division who does amazing things with her grade one class. I#8217;m not proposing that you need to do things radically different. Essay! Teach whatever you teach for Language Arts, or other subjects, but include a blog component. So if you#8217;re teaching sentence structure, teach your students to create complete sentences while blogging. Blogs, like traditional writing, need great structure.
If you#8217;re focusing on capitalization or punctuation, transfer this skill to blog writing as well. Nursing Self Evaluation Essay! If you#8217;re teaching paragraph structure, teach students the paragraph structure required for traditional essays and that for blogs. They#8217;re different. Explain why. It#8217;s likely they won#8217;t be good at it at first.
But there is merit to the quote, #8220;Anything worth doing, is worth doing badly.#8221; A middle years teacher at my school used to stress out when we talked about student writing. She wanted to know if she was teaching them enough. Essay Common Core! My reply: #8220;All I need them to do is write solid paragraphs. If they can do that, I can teach them all kinds of things.#8221; Really, everything I teach is either an addition to, or a subtraction from, a solid paragraph. Shame Gregory, Reflective! My work builds on her work. I don#8217;t need her to teach what I teach. Persuasive! That#8217;s my job. But without her previous work, mine becomes much more difficult.
The same is true with blogging. Scopes In Research! Starting from scratch with blogging in grade 10 isn#8217;t impossible. But we could do so much more if they already had the basics. Rubric Core! In order to write well, you need to Shame By Dick, write a lot. If you don#8217;t currently teach your students to blog, please start. Our students need you to.
And if you already teach your students to persuasive essay common, blog, keep it up. Because blogging is an important 21st century skill. It#8217;s the new persuasive essay. Bahasa Inggeris! Latest posts by Shelley Wright (see all) Are You Ready to Join the Slow Education Movement? - August 26, 2014 Academic Teaching Doesn#039;t Prepare Students for Life - November 7, 2013 Start with Why: The power of persuasive common core student-driven learning - June 21, 2013. Shelley, I love this!! I started using Kidblog with my 3rd graders last year, and nursing self evaluation looped up with them this year. Their 4th grade blogs were much improved, and I enjoyed watching them begin to develop their own blogging #8220;style#8221;. I did get some negative comments from both parents and other teachers that this was not #8220;writing.#8221; They felt it was too casual and too unstructured. Common Core! (I#8217;ll admit, the scopes and limitations in research Grammar Nazi in me gasped when I saw sentences in your blog beginning with #8220;and.#8221;) In lieu of a research paper this year, my students created Glogs that contained text boxes with information (well written paragraphs), but also allowed links, images, and a personal design. They loved it! I think you are absolutely right that students need to essay core, understand the difference.
There are times when more formal writing is necessary, so I#8217;m sure to teach it and essays require it on certain assignments. Persuasive Essay Rubric Common Core! I love it though that blogging enables them to ethnographic essays, discover their writing style and voice. Blogging does feel like playing, and persuasive rubric kids love to play. If blogging makes them love to write, I think we#8217;re fools not to self evaluation essay, encourage it! Thanks for a great post! Thanks, Patti. I think, unfortunately, there are many people who don#8217;t see the point or value of blogging. My students, for the most part, have always enjoyed it. What I disgree with is teaching only academic writing in schools. I think there are many formats our students need to learn #8212; blogging being only one. I think there#8217;s value to academic writing, but most of common our kids aren#8217;t going to become academics, and that#8217;s a good thing #128578; Throughout high school I was taught that you couldn#8217;t start a sentence with because or and.
Then I went to university and was told you could. Boy was that a shock! When I was in college I was taught not to use the essay bahasa inggeris first person pronoun in persuasive, my writing, EVER. Then I went to graduate school (Harvard) and everybody did it! Shocked again. On Obesity! Patti, thanks for posting links to keep me updated. I would love to try this with my kids this year but I need to be able to do it too! Great blog post on essay common, writing. Scopes In Research! I#8217;m constantly trying to find more and persuasive rubric various ways to Shame By Dick Gregory,, have students write in my Grade 8 US History class.
Part of persuasive essay rubric my task is to prepare them for the persuasive essay format on the ACT and the MME (Michigan Merit Exam). Your blog was helpful. Thanks. As I started reading your blog I was thinking, I teach some of those things to my fourth graders. Essay! However, it seems after fourth grade the writing drops to a minimal until it is tested again in 7th grade. Persuasive Essay! (Or at least that#8217;s the way it appears to me). On Obesity! I introduced blogging to my students 2 years ago and persuasive rubric core they loved it! It inspired more students to write as they had the global audience (which I think is a big draw). This year my students enjoyed it as well. However, I never really thought about the difference between writing in a blog and writing formally but will be discussing it with this year#8217;s class. Really, sharing your writing via a blog is exciting especially when you receive comments.
I#8217;ll be sharing your post around as I would love to nursing self evaluation, get more teachers to see the importance of blogging! Thanks for sharing. Thanks, Nancy! Students having an authentic audience is important. That#8217;s why we normally write. We have something to communicate to someone, and we choose the essay common core best medium for it, as well as an appropriate style. On Obesity! I wonder what Language Arts would become if we thought of essay core it as a communications class? This rings true for nursing essay me in every paragraph. I have recently begun a blogging project with some very able Year 10 students (please have a look at persuasive essay rubric core, my blog!) and there has been quite a lot of resistance along the lines of #8220;What#8217;s the point?#8221;
Your emphasis on moving with the times instead of stubbornly sticking to tradition strikes a resonant chord with my own teaching. Please keep this up, you have just made my day! I think, sometimes, kids don#8217;t see the point. They#8217;re not really used to having any of their work having a point or a real audience. I found that once my students got used to doing work that was authentic and bahasa meaningful, the essay common #8220;what#8217;s the point?#8221; stopped. While I agree with much of the bahasa inggeris fine print of persuasive common your argument, specifically notions of voice and your ideas about what good writing should feel/sound like, it seems to me that your premise is false. The blog/ persuasive essay duality is a false dichotomy. Certainly, students should consider form and purpose when they write, but they shouldn#8217;t learn, and and limitations in research paper we shouldn#8217;t teach, that blogs are all short paragraphs richly voiced. Great essays, and great blogs, can also be written with long and well voiced paragraphs. I think we do our students and each other a disservice when we promote, teach, or otherwise create these sorts of false either/ors. (The same is true of the grammar policing we do often at school, evidenced by Patti#8217;s mention of using a conjunction at persuasive essay rubric common, the beginning of a sentence in a comment above.) Good writing works.
We can explore and in spanish explain why it works, but it#8217;s never as simple as following all the rules for the particular container or mode or genre. Rubric! It#8217;s in the playful fiddling with all of about those that good writing emerges. Thanks for engaging my brain here. I agree that good writing is good writing, and I don#8217;t believe that blogs or the persuasive essay is an either/or thing. I think both should happen, but where I currently work, it doesn#8217;t. I see too often the academic essay hailed as the most essential skill a student can develop. I think the reason behind it is laudable;students should be able to argue their point of view. But too often there is no authentic audience or task attached to it, and it becomes for students another hoop to jump to persuasive core, get the #8220;A#8221;. I think the phd thesis thing that bothers me the most about it is the heirarchy that develops around kids who are considered #8220;academic#8221;, those who can write the essay, and those who are not. This is bad for kids and persuasive essay rubric teachers, so lately I#8217;ve come to ask why are we doing all of this, and nursing self evaluation aren#8217;t there more important skills they can learn?
I#8217;m not sure I agree with you on the long paragraphs in common, a blog. Essay Bahasa! I think you have to be a great writer to pull it off, and I haven#8217;t read a lot of persuasive rubric common those. But that#8217;s also what I tell my students. I don#8217;t tell them they can#8217;t do it. Instead, I tell them they have to be a strong writer to make it work. And for some of them, that#8217;s the challenge they need. They want to see if they can do it because they desire to be a strong writer. I teach composition at the community college level and trying to break the 5 paragraph habit is Shame, one of the first things I work with them on. That and the act of critical thinking and then writing down those critical thoughts. I think a blog is a great way to show students there is more than one way to express themselves. I am also a firm believer in blogging with my students!
I have used Kidblog for the past two years with my 5th graders., and persuasive essay rubric common it is an nursing, amazing tool to create motivated writers! #8220;Write On!: Why I Love Kidblog!#8221; I like and appreciate the fact that you made your points and also demonstrated them. Essay! I agree that paragraphs must be short for continuity, ease of flow and for evaluation essay referring back. I would add that you can include pics, vids, links, graphs, etc. to add flair and information to your persuasive blog/ opinion post. Also, when I teach blogs in essay rubric common, Writers Craft (gr 12) I make them aware that their audience is potentially the rest of the world. Daunting. And it makes them want to proofread a lot more and to consider the attractiveness of their blog and their writing style. Think about this: It is incredible that we as teachers can teach writing in By Dick, such a way that the teacher isn#8217;t the only one whoever sees their writing. This is a huge shift and speaks to the way s of the world of the next generation. Until someone comes up with an #8220;The Elements of core Blog Style#8221; that Bud and evaluation essay Tom and Shelley and others agree deserves respect, we don#8217;t have a real standard to go by. Shelley describes what makes sense to her #8212; Bud Hunt, a respected National Writing Project proponent demurs.
No doubt others do as well. Tom says that #8220;paragraphs must be short for continuity, ease of flow and for referring back.#8221; I#8217;m not sure it is a #8220;must#8221; but in essay, nearly a decade of editing group blogs and online diaries with a hundred or more educators, my sense is that this is *generally* a good rule of about thumb. It seems to me that the blog author needs a very good reason to publish long paragraphs that will appear on a screen at an unpredictable size and width (density) and be viewed by all kinds of eyes with all kinds of persuasive essay common core vision challenges. Certainly the nursing evaluation writing will need to be compelling! I don#8217;t know the history of the long paragraph (chances are I#8217;ll be researching it this week to satisfy my demon), but I#8217;m guessing that long paragraphs are the residual of several thousand years of writing on smooth flat rocks and hides and papyrus and hard-to-get pulp paper printed a sheet at a time.
Humans crammed as much as they could into the scarce space. Essay Common Core! Nothing scarce about essay myself, cyberspace. Why not change the rules? Nostalgia for writing styles is okay I certainly have some myself. But nostalgia is not a good basis for rubric common core contemporary rulemaking. Here#8217;s an excellent way to in research, create an authentic audience for your students! #8220;Quadblogging:Creating a Global Connection!#8221; Very interesting food for essay common thought.
To be sure, blogging provides a more authentic audience, something that is sorely needed! I also agree that when it comes to writing, there is no #8220;form#8221; with blogs. The issue is that students, and the rest of us, must realize that when something is written such as a persuasive essay, there should be some points of reference. Phd Thesis! What I find is, that due to a society that cannot focus but for short periods of time, thoughts are expressed based on persuasive rubric common core, unfounded suppositions. Students have to essay, realize that more formal, traditional writing, gives them practice on rubric core, conventions such as writing full words, sentences, etc. and some other standards of grammar. Phd Thesis On Obesity! Not old fashioned, but keeps things from becoming a free-for-all. I think blogging should provide students with the opportunity to practice using conventions and rubric form #8212; in on obesity, an authentic context. I don#8217;t think that only formal writing can, or should, do this. I think one of the things we often forget when teaching writing is that we#8217;re teaching them to communicate, and that in persuasive rubric common, writing there is a #8220;code#8221; of communication that has developed over the centuries between reader and writer.
There are reasons we write and punctuate as we do. Essay In Spanish About! Instead, we often teach rules, rather than the persuasive rubric common intimate relationship between reader and writer. I think the latter is much more persuasive for students and essay myself creates better thinkers and writers in persuasive rubric common, the long run. Thank you for on obesity that article. I#8217;ve been perusing articles on education for about three hours now, and I am glad I came across yours.(catching up on my education articles) Not only rubric core do we need to move toward the realities of our students experiences, but there is room for interpretation on how we teach to it. We can argue all day long on phd thesis on obesity, the who#8217;s and how#8217;s , but at persuasive core, the end of the day is your writing effective. In whatever form or voice you choose. peoples response to ethnographic, your blog will be the essay common core best indicator. Now, how about those poorly constructed e-mails.
Would someone please blog on the voice and content of e-mails. If I#8217;m not written into your will, I#8217;m not reading a long drawn out e-mail. Peter, no one is suggesting that blogging should become a #8216;free-for all#8221;, it#8217;s all about on obesity, creating enthusiasm for longer pieces of writing that create and sustain a point of view. Of course we should insist on standard English, but we can do that when setting up the success criteria for blogging just as we would for a formal essay. Essay Rubric Core! If blogging gets students to engage with and develop their process of writing, I#8217;m all for it, especially if it helps students understand that they may express themselves in writing through a variety of structures. As a high school teacher I spend an in spanish about, enormous amount of time and energy trying to convince students that not every idea they have needs to be one that can be expressed in five paragraphs. I do worry, however, that the informality of blogs may encourage vague and formless expression of feelings and suppositions. Though the academic essay is only one mode of written expression it does teach students important skills that transfer to other modes: the persuasive common core structuring of ideas, the presentation and rigorous analysis of evidence, the effects of sentence structure and voice on nursing self evaluation, meaning, to name but a few.
Of course, having students write blogs can also teach them these skills if their blogs are held to certain standards. The five-paragraph essay may be some dirty bathwater that needs to persuasive essay rubric common, be tossed, but let#8217;s make sure to save the baby, the hallmarks of good writing. I absolutely agree that blogging is an excellent platform for writing and provides the with an authentic audience. I recently attended the self ISTE conference and attended a session on establishing connections through blogging presented by persuasive core, Lisa Parisi Brian Crosby. Your blog just reaffirms everything that I took away from this session. Lisa and Brian#8217;s students#8217; writing is truly amazing because, as you mentioned, they have the opportunity to use their own voice to take on issues that matter to Reflective, them, then when they receive responses to their posts, they are further inspired to write even more. I have the persuasive essay opportunity to coordinate a Teaching American History Grant,, primarily targeted for and limitations fifth grade teachers who lay the foundations of persuasive essay rubric common core American History in their instructional program. One of essay about our grant goals is to utilize Web 2.0 technology as an instructional and collaboration tool.
This past year the teachers created their own blogs and have been utilizing them primarily as a means of communicating/collaborating with each other. Essay Rubric Common! The goal for this next year is to essay, have each of the teachers create a blog in their classroom (or utilize one they have already created) so that students can utilize this platform for writing, with the goal of having others responding to their blogs. Since persuasive writing is one of the types of writing taught in fifth grade, I believe there will be several opportunities for the students to utilize these persuasive writing techniques in essay common core, their blogs. Phd Thesis On Obesity! I hope you enjoyed ISTE this week I remember coming back from my first one quite overwhelmed! There are no large conferences like that in Ontario and it took me a while to unpack all that I learned. Although I have only persuasive essay rubric been blogging for in spanish 6 years, I#8217;ve noticed big changes. Persuasive Essay Rubric Common Core! Blogs or #8216;weblogs#8217; used to be places where folks shared their travels and learning on phd thesis on obesity, the web so that others could follow their links and rubric common have some understanding of where they received inspiration, new connections or knowledge.
Now, you#8217;re lucky to have any links at all shared, and if they are, they are often links back to nursing self, the writer#8217;s own work! Don#8217;t get me wrong, I love that blogs give students an authentic audience (especially since persuasive writing is a part of our curriculum here in Ontario as early as the primary grades) and I#8217;m not a #8216;purist#8217; about them. I have been using and persuasive essay rubric core promoting blogging as a part of balanced literacy since 2006 and believe they can serve many purposes. I just hope that we do let blogs stand apart from essay bahasa inggeris, some of our traditional forms of writing so that we aren#8217;t trying to do old school things with new tools. Many unread and discarded blogs exist because teachers jump onto the blogging bandwagon without scaffolding students to real conversations and authentic purposes for writing. Thanks for bringing up some important conversations here. Rubric Core! #128578; I completely agree with what you#8217;ve said, especially your point, #8220;Many unread and discarded blogs exist because teachers jump onto and limitations, the blogging bandwagon without scaffolding students to real conversations and authentic purposes for writing.#8221; I think this is rubric, one of those #8220;21st C. skills#8221; that students need. What does it mean to speak and blog authentically? This will be an especially difficult thing for essay inggeris many high school students to answer since they#8217;ve often had few authentic writing experiences in their academic career. Persuasive Essay Common Core! But this ia an important discussion! This is great!
I worked with 4th and5th graders this past year on blogging. They did an amazing job! Really only since Jan#8230;came so far. Thanks for this thinking! I think writing for more than an audience of 1 changed their effort, energy and in research paper enthusiasm! It#8217;s amazing what kids can do in such a short time.
Thanks for sharing! I think Wright brings up a lot of good points about blogging in this article. I remember writing persuasive essays and feeling stuck to persuasive common, pick a topic. When I did settle on one it felt so typical of a persuasive argument. We are pushing more and nursing self evaluation essay more for persuasive essay rubric core authentic practice and self evaluation essay work from students and blogging is an excellent way to practice naturally.
There are blogs about everything under the sun that you could allow students to use in order to start with and persuasive essay common practice blogging. A teacher could then create a class blog and post: Who has the best blog in the class? Hook, line, and sink her! What better way to get kids into paper it then going right to what they are passionate about. I could only imagine how long that blog would be and the many mini-lessons it could contain.
Some trouble I experienced with persuasive writing was creating the opposing sides arguments. Through blogging students will actually have those arguments given and then will have to decide which are viable and should be included or addressed in core, their own writing. Blogs exist on every topic, even topics that may not be recognizably controversial. This is another reason why blogging to teach persuasive writing is beneficial to students. Blogs are less intimidating because they are short bits of information and the reader has preference over which ones to give more attention to and which to Shame Reflective, ignore.
I would imagine blogging would lead to critical thinking because you are concisely trying to make your point. No one wants to read a long blog post. That#8217;s part of why people blog in the first place. Blogging is also able to reach far more people and essay common core cause action than an academic essay whose audience is far less accessible. Shelly, I enjoyed reading your thoughts and too agree that it is never too early to start teaching our students how to be productive digital citizens. Phd Thesis On Obesity! In the age of IM and text messaging I was afraid writing in complete sentences with thought was going to essay rubric core, increasingly become a lost art. Th Grade Argument/Claims Writing Rubric - Common Core Standards
. many countries encourage participation, but provide limited mechanisms to allow user feedback. When questions about persuasive common participation are discussed and presented in plans there seem to be a tendency towards understanding openness in terms of access to, and gathering of information through the building of infrastructure, better availability, the use of evaluation open standards, securing universal accessibility, etc. This becomes evident when the European governments are elaborating on the implementation of e#150;government (Commission of the European Communities, 2002) within the European community, as well as when American authorities discuss similar issues (U.S. Executive Office of the essay, President, 2003). Aspects of openness regarding how the public should become more able to #147;analyse and utilize#148; this information do not seem to be considered as important as those concerning access and availability.
Commercial information providers have another relationship to essays, the quality and sustainability of information. They always have to consider whether the persuasive common core, presentation of information is self evaluation, going to sell their product, and if it is going to essay common, improve the customer#146;s experience of the product in which they have decided to invest their time and/or money. From a strictly commercial point of view it does not matter if the nursing essay, quality of information in low, inaccurate, or even false, as long as the production costs are kept down compared to the revenue. Commercial actors are therefore encouraged to design systems facilitating openness by the fact that a large number of people are willing to produce information for free through participation, being both producers and consumers of rubric common information. These systems may be organised as large communities with tens, perhaps even hundreds of thousands of users, or the users may be organised in a large number of small groups where the members have closer ties. Small groups may also exist within a large community, as in the physical world, and may provide information on a more personal level.
Information with personal qualities interests users, but these qualities may be difficult to Reflective, achieve . From the point of view of the vendor the different ways of organising a community are of less concern if there is a large number of users who produce and use information on a regular basis, and as long as the work moderating and managing this information is kept to a minimum. When talking about openness, commercial vendors tend to use the term as part of common core their strategic thinking to essay bahasa inggeris, introduce #147;pervasive media environments#148; (Berman, 2004), not necessarily in terms of empowering individuals or technology#146;s democratic potential (Rushkoff, 2003). An interesting observation is that education is somewhere in the middle, being obliged to handle all aspects of openness, from a strictly authoritative approach, where the learners are given access to one understanding of specific information, to common, an approach where the learners are expected to explore, re#150;contextualise and produce information on their own. When media change information providers are affected most significantly by whether they are able to build new relationships to their previous customers/consumers who now become potential contributors in a participation culture . Civil services will still be restricted by concerns regarding quality of information, issues that are more complex than the considerations made by individuals writing weblogs, online newspapers providing discussion boards, or vendors facilitating online communities, etc. There may be numerous reasons why the essay inggeris, different actors do what they do; I would like to emphasize the increasing differences between how information is created and distributed in various parts of society. Persuasive Rubric? These differences were not as evident before as long as most public information was produced centrally by state authorities or the press, and scopes, distributed to consumers through technical solutions that did not provide any significant possibilities for feedback. To summarise some of these approaches to openness: From an official and core, public service point of view information providers want openness biased towards information access. One tends to encourage participation, but this is understood as mechanisms facilitating feedback , not as tools making the public producers of content . From a commercial point of view information providers also want to facilitate easy access, but these actors also have strong interests in encouraging openness with users acting as producers of content. These actors are more likely to develop an understanding of the #147;quality of essay bahasa information#148; with a bias towards information#146;s ability to appeal and engage an persuasive rubric audience. Some approaches to openness in communication.
The complexity of openness in communication systems range from technical issues, like how information is mediated and distributed, via economical concerns, to a number of social issues that may influence the availability, use and the potential impact of information in society. Therefore, when trying to make classifications of communication, one should not alone look at the technical properties of technologies, or how they are related to time and space, or solely on the basis of information content. These are all important aspects of any technology, but do not provide a vocabulary capable of describing some important features of digital networked media: the different ways in which the users become both consumers and producers of information (Jensen, 1998). In Research? Online networked computers, accompanied by digital cameras, small sound recording devices, techniques for essay rubric common, positioning, mobile phones etc. all have the scopes paper, potential of persuasive rubric enabling groups of various sizes and individuals to and limitations in research paper, participate actively in the production of information in numerous ways. Persuasive Rubric? When looking for a classification that includes different aspects of openness these features of essay bahasa inggeris #147;new media#148; have to be considered. Open vs. closed content.
Mayer (1997) building upon earlier work #151; presents a classification of persuasive essay rubric common common computer media applications which focuses on the computer#146;s characteristic semiotic nature and self evaluation essay, its #147;capacities for symbol manipulation#148;, and the #147;responsive context of reception#148;. In the table below, content scope, temporal, and persuasive core, spatial attributes are compared, and demonstrate how these characteristics can be used to differentiate between various computer media. The model provides a useful approach to a distinction between open and on obesity, closed content that is consistent with existing terminology used in traditional media studies. However, this classification fails to grasp the processes related to how this content came into being, or how it is essay core, used. Another perspective on openness is provided by Benkler who defines three different layers of communication, a physical layer (wires, cable, radio frequency spectrum), a logical layer (software, protocols), and a content layer (text, images, sound etc). Lessig (2001) uses Benkler#146;s layers when discussing how different communication systems influence on our abilities to act as users instead of mere consumers of information. The table below is an extension of the model presented by Lessig . Lessig discuss 1, 2, 3 8, and uses #147;free#148; vs. #147;closed#148; where I am using #147;open#148; vs. #147;closed#148;: Speakers#146; Corner and Madison Square Garden are two of the examples used by Lessig.
At Speakers#146; Corner (1) anyone who wants to public performance get access to the park (the physical layer), he may do a presentation of his own choice (the logical level), and he is free to chose what to present (the content level). One may, however, argue that this openness become a theoretical possibility to scopes and limitations in research paper, most people, not being able to visit Speakers Corner when they have something they want to say, or not being among the relatively few constituting a #147;public sphere#148; where private people come together #147;as a public and articulating the needs of rubric common core society with the By Dick Gregory, Reflective, state#148; . Persuasive Rubric Common Core? However, communication will always be limited by both physical and scopes and limitations in research paper, social/psychological constraints, and for practical purpose we will only essay rubric common, be able to evaluation essay, talk about this complete openness within limited communities, though never in rubric core, the world at large. In an arena like Madison Square Garden (2) an individual will have the same possibilities as at Speakers#146; Corner, save that the Reflective, building has to be rented. That is because the access to the physical level is restricted by the owner of the infrastructure needed to give a performance. In the telephone system (3) a user will have to essay, pay for access to the system and he has no influence on how the content is mediated at Shame By Dick Gregory, Reflective, the logical level. But the system is open on the content level making the users able to say whatever they want, as long as the persuasive rubric common, system does not discriminate between different users on the basis of the information they are communicating. Writing by hand (4) is an example of a technology that do not imply any restrictions to the content, and where the physical level is fully accessible, at lest for most practical purposes. On Obesity? The only restrictions to what the users are able to express is rubric core, found on the logical level as limitations implicit in written language.
An example is writings shortcomings when it comes to describe movement in any fulfilling way. Bahasa Inggeris? One may also argue that the essay common, use of recordable media like CD#150;R, DVD#150;R, and hard disk recorders, MP3 players etc. can serve as examples of (4), even though the access to the physical level is restricted by the need of ethnographic specific hardware. However, given that in large parts of the world such recording devices are relatively cheap and easy to rubric, purchase, this limitation do not imply any practical restriction that prevents these people from using recording devices. Essay Inggeris? The most severe limitations to the use of digital recording technologies are found on persuasive essay rubric common, the logical level where DRM systems applied in software and the implications of about copyright laws are some examples. Lessig argues that the essay rubric core, Internet (5) is an example where the physical layer is completely controlled by governments and commercial vendors. Most of the content is By Dick Gregory,, protected by copyright laws, Benkler uses Los Angeles Times v. Free Republic (Carney, 2001) as an example. However, on the logical level the Internet has been open, as long as protocols and software traditionally have been openly documented, as well as shared and persuasive essay common core, used without severe restrictions, and developed by collective efforts.
Because of this openness Internet technology has been transferable to numerous infrastructures, making the communication facilitated by these technologies difficult to control by introducing restrictions at on obesity, the physical level. Persuasive Essay Rubric? However, this may change from a number of reasons. Trusted computing , referring to the embedding of end#150;to#150;end validation of the origin and integrity of data into computer hardware and system software (Kay, 2006), is one of several technical solutions that alone, or in combination with other technical and legal solutions, will limit users#146; abilities to scopes and limitations in research paper, produce, back up, copy, and common, distribute content in ways they find opportune (Walker, 2003). A perhaps more common example of essay bahasa inggeris how closeness is introduced on persuasive rubric common core, the logical level is the essay bahasa, use of special applications like Flash to present content on the Web. Instead of making autonomous Web pages that can be linked to, and accessed one by one Flash applications usually close references to essay, different content on a server.
Personal Video Recorders (PVR) (6) are perhaps not the best example where only the content layer is closed, as long as when they are used to record television programs the logical layer will be controlled by the broadcasters, and a number of restrictions may be implemented in hardware. However, I am using PVRs as an example to be able to introduce the possibility of technical restrictions taking full control over the presentation of media content, in extreme cases even over essay about perception. Persuasive Essay Rubric Common Core? A concrete example is Philips solution for #147;preventing a viewer from switching from a channel when an essay bahasa advertisement is persuasive rubric common core, being displayed on the channel#148;, and if the program is recorded on a PVR the technology #147;prevents a viewer of a recorded program from fast forwarding the ethnographic, recorded program in order to skip past advertisements#148; . . individuals will become accustomed to the idea of little or no privacy whenever they visit public places, both physical and virtual. AWhen the physical level is open and there are restrictions to both the content and the logical level we are experiencing an instance of surveillance (7).
Writing this sitting in Volkspark Friedrichshain I am thinking of what Speakers#146; Corner would be like in former East Germany: Most people would have physical access, but would be unable to speak freely or make performances of their own choice. Aspects of surveillance introduce several questions about power relations, not only persuasive essay, between the producers and consumers of in research information, which will be discussed later, but also to an increasing degree those who the communication is about. An example is services like gawker.com/stalker (at http://gawker.com/stalker/ that re#150;mediates parts of gossip#150;journalism, now in the hands of the public. But the potential in #147;surveillance#148; goes much further, and is one of the main reasons why Google fund the persuasive common, building of free WiFi systems, making them capable of providing plateatic advertising (advertisements targeted by Gregory, Reflective geographic location). Common Core? The surveillance potential in different technologies may cause an erosion of of privacy with the result that individuals will become accustomed to the idea of little or no privacy whenever they visit public places, both physical and virtual. Examples are: when they are travelling; sharing files or communicating on the Internet; they are using their cellphones; in education. In addition to intended use technologies almost always have a #147;function creep#148; that occurs when technical features, designed for a specific purpose, ends up serving many other purposes (Hoepman and phd thesis, Jacobs, 2006). Being accustomed to a general idea that privacy is not available, people may become less able to recognize new, potential threats against essay rubric common core privacy. Even if such threats are identified the precedence of already accepted solutions will make it increasingly difficult to define and articulate other, alternative solutions that respect privacy.
Cable TV systems (8) are designed to provide a great deal of information from vendors to the consumers, resembling broadcasting. All three levels are restricted: the consumers do not own the wires into ethnographic their homes, programming is common core, controlled, and the use of the content is limited by copyright, or by technical restrictions (see Personal Video Recorder). Cable and ADSL are also technologies used to provide many with broadband access to the Internet, building an asymmetric relationship between information providers and information consumers to a technology (the Internet) that originally treated all actors as peers. Users with unrestricted Internet connections are already a privileged class being able to essay myself, set up their own servers, create new services, establish true peer#150;to#150;peer connections with other sites, etc. By introducing technical solutions to make online computers more easy and secure, like NATs and firewalls, new technologies reproduce the traditional relationship between #147;publishers#148; or #147;broadcasters#148; and their #147;consumers#148; or #147;audience#148; (Walker, 2003). Being able to describe how the different layers of a communication technology influence the production, distribution and use of information is important to an understanding of openness . Essay Rubric? However, even though Benkler discusses how regulatory choices influence the #147;consumer#150;producer relationship#148;, the model does not provide a vocabulary that considers how users are affected as producers or as consumers of information on different levels. A comprehensive understanding of openness in communication should be able to classify different media according to how they influence relations between producers and consumers, an approach taken by Bordewijk and van Kaam (1986) when explaining the future development of #147;tele#150;information services#148;. They presented a model with four communication patterns describing the relationships between information providers and information consumers. Rather than emphasizing different media#146;s technical characteristics, genres or content Bordewijk and van Kaam answer two initial questions about the self evaluation, #147;provider#148; and the #147;consumer#148; of information: Is the transmitted information owned by persuasive essay rubric core an information service providing centre or an phd thesis on obesity individual information service consumer? Is the transmission and use of the information controlled by an information service providing centre or an individual information service consumer?
Answering who delivers the information, and who controls access to and use of information is represented as a matrix with four #147;ideal information#150;patterns#148;. Persuasive Essay Core? It is nursing evaluation essay, important to persuasive essay rubric, note that these patterns are #147;ideal#148; in a sense where they are supposed to be used as analytical tools. In reality no media can be understood as being part of only one of these patterns: Bordewijk and van Kaam use the terms #147;information service centre#148; and #147;information service consumer#148; instead of #147;sender#148; and Shame Gregory, Reflective, #147;receiver#148;. Like Benkler#146;s model, one distinctive mark of the essay common, typology of communication patterns is that it is defined independently of the technical design of the media, the form of presentation, and the content of in spanish myself information. Persuasive Essay Rubric Common Core? But where Benkler is inspired by the topology of computer networks the communication patterns are derived from social power relations.
Focus is on the flow of information between different actors ignoring the Shame, different quantitative and qualitative aspects of the information content (Jensen, 1996). When discussing openness the communication patterns must therefore be used with other aspects of openness in persuasive common core, mind. Bordewijk and van Kaam came up with their model years before the invention of the Shame By Dick Reflective, Web; their four communication patterns only persuasive essay, take into account #147;centre#148; and #147;consumer#148;. Phd Thesis On Obesity? This is hardly surprising, given that their main interests were the future development of broadcasting and telecommunication systems. However the model does not take into persuasive rubric common consideration new aspects of digital networked media that facilitate users as producers of information. Essay About? These perspectives call for an extension of persuasive common core both axes of the model: I am therefore adding information produced by users as a collective and in spanish about, distribution controlled by users as a collective . In the following model my understanding of #147;distribution#148; goes beyond the ability to control the infrastructure (corresponding to Benkler#146;s physical level) used for distribution. One also has to consider the users#146; ability to decide when and how the essay rubric core, content is re#150;edited, re#150;used, or just consumed. The use of #147;collective#148; also needs some initial explanation. Collective does not necessarily mean that individuals are organised in phd thesis, definable groups; on the contrary, individuals forming a networked collective using digital media will often be loosely organised.
One can even describe this organisation, or lack of such, as autonomous individuals #147;out of control#148;, not connected by persuasive essay core a hierarchical chain of command. Instead their activities are results from a multitude of simultaneous actions whose collective pattern are called networks, complex adaptive systems, swarms, collective systems, etc. . On Obesity? The members of such collectives are highly connected in a peer network, but without answering to an organisation, or a centre of control. Each member acts individually according to persuasive, some basic rules and given situations in essays, their local environment . When taking the collective into consideration the model forms nine different communication patterns: Transmission occurs when information is produced by rubric core a centralized information service which also controls when information is distributed to the users. The flow of information runs in one direction only, from the centre to a number of autonomous users. All users are treated in the exact same manner when it comes to distribution, receiving the information simultaneously. The information can either be previously stored by ethnographic the information service, or it may be offered #147;on the fly#148; at the moment of distribution. Most media based on transmission are characterized by access to large amounts of stored information. Only a tiny fragment of this information is distributed to users at a given time, and always in essay rubric common core, ways that ensure that users are receiving the same information simultaneously.
Individual users in the transmission model have no other choice that to receive the information provided at a given moment in time. Communication based on transmission may therefore be referred to as #147;one#150;way#148; or #147;one#150;to#150;many#148;, emphasizing that the communication channels have no possibilities for feedback. This information-pattern is typical in traditional broadcast media like radio and in spanish myself, television. Transmission is the communication pattern with the strongest bias towards closeness. Still, the content may be fully accessible, communicated by using open standards, and essay, even possible to manipulate through interaction. Nevertheless, the and limitations in research paper, pattern is heavily restricted, as long as the information centre exclusively chooses when to grant access to users. However, the use of video recorders is an persuasive common core example of how new technology changes an existing communication pattern by giving users more choices to control the Shame By Dick Gregory,, distribution of information.
The most telling examples of transmission today are found in common core, streaming media solutions on the Internet where the scopes paper, ability of users to persuasive rubric core, record can be heavily restricted. Registration occurs when information is produced by on obesity individual users, but a centralised service then takes control of the information by collecting and storing it. Rubric? Users may provide information by request from the information centre, or the scopes in research, user may give information without any previous request. As long as the information is produced by users the division of power seems to be reversed from #147;transmission#148; and essay rubric common core, #147;consultation#148; patterns. However, the information centre has exclusive control over what users are able to register by providing interfaces where information is produced. Ethnographic Essays? An example is the persuasive essay common core, use of polls where the owners of Web sites give their users opportunities to answer questions by selecting between predefined choices. It is also important to remember that the information centre in most cases collects information with a purpose, and does not facilitate openness in the sense of giving communicating parties equal opportunities.
In registration patterns the initial information producers are not able to control the information after it is registered by the information centre. The centre has exclusive control of storage and phd thesis on obesity, may use this control to re#150;arrange and re#150;mediate the information and use it in other communication patterns, or to facilitate such patterns. Bordewijk and common core, van Kaam use (tele#150;)opinion polling, shopping systems, etc. as examples of registration by request. Essay? Examples of persuasive essay registration without request can be systems made for surveillance, logging of computer systems, etc. Services offering storage of photos where the users are given few possibilities may also be characterised as registration without request. The registration pattern can also be said to be present in relationships between the makers of software, that is publicly available, and users. Most users are not able to make their own software, or they are finding it more convenient to use software made by self essay others. These users are limited to the possibilities build into software and illustrate that production of persuasive essay rubric common core digital media objects are often assembled by selecting from ready#150;made functions, or from media material provided centrally. All authoring and editing software comes with a large number of these predefined functions, and additional functionality may be added by using #147;plug#150;ins#148; which makes third#150;party vendors able to nursing self evaluation, incorporate new functions into a program#146;s interface .
This selection among predefined functions is essay rubric common, only registration when the new information is stored by a central service, but to Shame By Dick, an increasing degree this is happening with online services that provide the same functions as standalone programs. Persuasive Essay Common? Google is the in spanish about myself, most obvious example of a successful commercial approach based on the principle that information is accessible, and, to an increasing degree, produced online (Google, 2005). Questions about selection are important when discussing openness and essay common, control, and makes evident one of the limitations in the model: there is no pattern that covers situations where information that is controlled by a centre (the program manufacturer or the bahasa inggeris, service provider) and used by individuals to make products that they are able to store and control. Selecting performed by individuals when producing and re#150;mediating information that is stored locally has to essay rubric, be understood as a combination of several patterns. Commenting occurs when the collecting and storage of information is centralized, but some of the information is provided by a number of users. The central service controls the initial information, but individual users are able to ethnographic, provide additional information that may even contradict the original.
The commenting pattern also implies that the information provided by individual users is accessible by other users. Persuasive Essay Rubric? Commenting can therefore be considered as more open than the Shame By Dick Gregory,, registration pattern because information is essay, not hidden after it is stored by the central service. Where registration normally will be limited to selecting between pre#150;defined alternatives most instances of commenting make the individual producers able to formulate their opinions with their own words, perhaps even provide some additional media material by uploading or using hyperlinking. However, those providing information though the commenting pattern are not able to essay inggeris, revise their texts after it is posted, similar to how information is essay common, controlled centrally in the registration pattern. Commenting appears in essay in spanish about myself, online discussion- oards, weblogs, and a number of other online media that makes it possible to essay rubric common, display feedback in the same context as an original information element. Normally this pattern does not include response where additional information are controlled, or changed by an editor, unless the content is scopes in research, a violation of law or considered as spam. Pure commenting are unmoderated responses where the information provided by others is presented without delay in addition to the original information that initiated the response in the first place. Consultation occurs when information is produced and owned by essay rubric core a central information service, but where individuals are able to control which information they receive and Shame Reflective, when this information is delivered.
The consultation pattern always depends on persuasive rubric common, information which is stored before the moment of essays distribution. In other words, this communication pattern is persuasive essay core, always asynchronous. Consultation offers some flexibility in favour of users, but it requires some specific activities on in research, their behalf. The users have to request information by essay rubric common core performing activities defined by the information centre. The label #147;interactivity#148; is often used to characterise this process, ranging from clicking on Shame By Dick Gregory, Reflective, specific hyperlinks to the users#146; movement and achievements in computer games. One can argue that these techniques represent a potential democratisation of the use of media by empowering users in new ways. However, interactivity is essay core, also used to describe systems that are no more than collections of information which can be accessed at a time which the user finds convenient. These systems thereby belong to the same pattern as newspapers and books. Discussing openness one can even argue that many so#150;called interactive systems are much less open than printed books: for example, cybertexts (Aarseth, 1997) are controlled by a computer, where users can do no more than select between pre#150;defined options since the overall structure is hidden. Even if the ethnographic essays, functionality of a given program is available, most users will not be able to make qualified judgements about how information is presented. Communication based on consultation is often #147;one#150;to#150;one#148; or #147;many#150;to#150;one#148;, found in what Jensen calls #147;electronic memories#148; (Jensen, 1996).
Examples are FTP, World Wide Web, and a number of online services providing stored content. The consultation pattern also include various forms of printed media, CD#150;ROM, DVDs and persuasive common, videotapes. Dialogue occurs when individual users are able to on obesity, participate actively in both the rubric common, production and distribution of information. The information and the time of essay myself information exchange are totally controlled by the users, and the means of production and distribution are shared equally between them. Information in the dialogue pattern is essay, normally not stored before it is communicated, but it may be stored by one or several users during the communication process. The flow of essays information runs in several directions and cannot be controlled by one user alone. When communication is mediated the connections between users will often be provided by an information service centre. In these cases the centre represents a technical facility which typically serves several consumers, and the centre does not intervene in essay common core, the production or in scopes in research, the time of distribution of information. Dialogue may be referred to as #147;one#150;to#150;one#148; or #147;many#150;to#150;many#148;. This pattern is typical in oral traditions where those communicating have to meet physically, but the dialogue pattern also apply to mediated communication. The telephone system is a typical example: users decide who they want to call, when to make the essay common, call, and what the conversation is scopes and limitations, going to be about, while the system operates like a #147;black box#148; routing the telephone calls between users without interfering with the information that users communicate.
Dialogues do not have to be synchronous and instantaneous. Persuasive Essay Rubric Common Core? The dialogue pattern can include ordinary mail, fax, e#150;mail, etc. Similar patterns also occur on a number of different services on Shame Gregory,, the Internet, from Usenet discussions, via a wide range of persuasive common commenting functions to open chatrooms. Collaboration occurs when information is produced by a number of on obesity individuals organised as a collective, and distribution is controlled at an individual level. A communication system facilitating collaboration allows users to use and revise content provided by others without any prior consent. The information in the collaboration pattern has to be stored before it will be accessible to other users, and this storage is persuasive rubric, normally done by a central service. This service may be taken down and users may lose content, but as long as the system is up and running all users are treated the same.
Wikis and, to essay in spanish, some extent, the development of open source software exemplifies collective efforts where collaborative patterns occur. Note that a great deal of persuasive software that is sold under the umbrella #147;collaborative tools#148; does not necessarily facilitate a collaborative pattern. In a collaborative environment individuals do not have exclusive control over content they make available, every user has the same possibilities to make changes, add new or additional information, or even delete content provided by others. This does not cause any substantial problems in wikis where malicious behaviour or mistakes may be corrected easily, and essay bahasa inggeris, only affect autonomous nodes without severe consequences in related nodes. Persuasive Essay Common? However, even though most users have the same privileges some users have access to essays, additional functions. In a wiki this will be system operators and administrators at different levels who are able to make changes to software, carry out essay rubric common sanctions against essay about misbehaving, etc. When collaborating on large software projects there are also differences in the status of users, because minor changes in one part of a program may cause unexpected failures in other parts. Persuasive Common? There has to be some centralised revision control with the implementation of new code . Ethnographic? Since software is made for a relatively specific purpose there also has to be a consensus about the core functionality. Consequently software projects have to implement some kind of hierarchy where some users are given privileges that make them capable of persuasive essay common core making decisions that other contributors have to follow. In other words, neither a wiki, nor a software project can be organised following collaborative patterns only.
Because users in a collaborative environment are able to phd thesis, revise and re#150;use each other#146;s work they have to make an agreement stating that copyright law shall not be applied to shared information. In software development there exist numerous such agreements and licences (Free Software Foundation, 2006) that potential contributors have to accept to be allowed to participate in a project. When working with other kinds of content, like text, images, and audio files, Creative Commons is the most widely used licensing regime, providing six different licences (Creative Commons, 2006) that make content creators able give others opportunities to collaborate using their content. The two communication patterns #151; collaboration and persuasive rubric core, dialogue #151; are often closely connected: dialogue is necessary to foster many of the social processes which make collaboration possible. Discussions about the functionality in open source software are a good example, where many are involved, but the and limitations, final decisions are made by persuasive essay rubric common core relatively few, privileged members of the essays, community. Persuasive Core? Collaboration differs from commenting because new content can be produced by users revising each other#146;s work as well as adding new material. Syndication occurs when information is produced by an information centre, but individual users are able to take control over the information and re#150;use it for different purposes. Syndication is well known from traditional media. Both television and newspapers pay for the right to use information provided by news agencies and they often use this information quite extensively without substantial editorial changes, adding it to information they produce themselves. However, the latter is more like the communication pattern sharing, while a precise understanding of syndication does not involve any changes in the information content by others than the the central service creating the nursing evaluation essay, content in persuasive common, the first place.
On the Internet syndication normally refers to the distribution of banner advertisements, and #147;feeds#148; from a site indicating new content (like the latest posts from a weblog). Scopes And Limitations Paper? The degree of user control varies from full text feeds in XML, that other services may re#150;mediate in multiple ways, to solutions where content may be included, but not changed. File sharing systems are another example of how the persuasive essay rubric, syndication pattern becomes facilitated on the Internet. File sharing systems distribute data, or parts of larger collections of Reflective data, to a number of users who then provide this data to others. Sharing occurs when content produced by individual users is distributed and re#150;used by a number of others. The sharing pattern is similar to syndication with one important difference: in the sharing pattern information initially is produced by individual users. Note that sharing is not necessarily a communication pattern that all the actors approve, as long as information may be distributed through a sharing pattern without the original creator#146;s consent. The re#150;use and re#150;editing of information may be an aspect of sharing, but the sharing pattern differs from collaboration because there are only individual users who take part in the production and editing of information.
Creators of weblogs often use the persuasive rubric, sharing pattern this way when they create new posts by phd thesis using citations and links found at other sites. However, when looking at how information may change when shared between large numbers of blog creators the pattern changes and becomes more like collaboration. Some actors are always considered to be more authoritative, or more trustworthy that others, and essay common core, when information are edited by these users others are likely to treat this information in ways which may have some of the myself, characteristics of syndication. Essay? It is also possible to scopes paper, argue that authority causes behaviour that resembles the transmission pattern (Shirky, 2003). There are numerous examples of how information is shared among online newspapers and blogs, where the persuasive common core, exact same citations, phrases, and references are used on hundreds of sites. When the essays, creator of a new post only makes a citation, without making any changes to the initial information, the core, communication pattern that occurs is only distinguished from syndication by the fact that the original producer no longer has the ability to make changes to the cited content.
Transclusion (Nelson, 2000) of essay bahasa media material, typically used to essay common, #147;hot#150;link#148; images and multimedia files or by displaying an external site within a frameset, are also examples of the communication pattern. These examples are made possible by the Web, and the Internet#146;s #147;openness#148; on Benkler#146;s logical layer, which makes content creators able to identify autonomous elements and address them directly. Emergence occurs when both production and distribution of information are collective processes. No centralised unit or individual user are able to fully control the creation or re#150;editing and distribution of essay bahasa inggeris information. Actually emergence is characterised by an explicit absence of control and systems facilitating emergence are those which come closest to full #147;openness#148;. It is rubric, relatively easy to By Dick, design communication systems where emergence is not likely to occur; if information can only be accessed, not re#150;used, emergence will never happen within a system. On the other hand is it almost impossible to design a system to explicitly facilitate emergence, simply because these processes always are unpredictable and occurs as a result of social processes.
These processes include contributors with different objectives and they seldom have a shared understanding about the rubric common, results of their collective achievements. As individuals, each contributor may have well#150;defined reasons for what he is doing, but there are absolutely no guarantees that these ideas are shared by others. Emergent communication patterns can only Shame Gregory, Reflective, be realised by a close interplay between the cultural use of technical solutions and the development of these solutions. The actors using and essay rubric common, developing an emergent system will quite often be unaware of each other, but they will still rely upon each other#146;s work and they may share a set of socially constituted #147;rules#148; influencing their behaviour. Essay In Spanish? From this follows that a communication system that gives an emergent information pattern in essay rubric core, one setting may not cause the same effects when some of the scopes in research paper, conditions change. An attempt to give a practical example of the emergent communication pattern can be seen in the figure above, an attempt to create the persuasive rubric core, title of this paper in colourful letters. Bahasa Inggeris? The letters are provided by individuals posting pictures to Flickr.com, a service hosting pictures and giving their users the persuasive essay rubric common, option of tagging their images. Tagging is one approach to the ordering of information by unorganised efforts, often called folksonomy (Quintarelli, 2005). Some of those who upload pictures of an #147;O#148; choose to tag it with the tags #147;oneletter#148; and #147;o#148;.
When this paper was written 3,408 pictures were tagged this with #147;oneletter#148;. Flickr also provides an application interface (API) available for non#150;commercial use by outside developers (Flickr, 2006), something that made it possible to write a script (Kastner, 2005) which I could use to make the title. The final result is possible because of the contribution from a number of people, not connected to each other and with no obvious intentions on collaborating. The communication patterns are limited by the two initial questions: #147;Who controls production?#148;, and in spanish about myself, #147;Who controls distribution?#148; These questions do not address the different actors' underlying motivation, in other words: which and whose interests benefit from common core different patterns? Some initial answers to this question may be formulated by using what Michel de Certeau calls strategies and tactics, used in on obesity, his analysing the nature and politics of cultural production within #147;the practice of persuasive essay rubric core everyday life#148; . Strategies are manifested through institutional means of control in what one can describe as more closed systems.
Among the communication patterns presented #147;transmission#148;, #147;registration#148;, and #147;consultation#148; may be characterized as strategic/more closed communication patterns where the control is centralized. On the other hand, any economic, political, or technological system has to give their users some #147;space#148; for movement, qualities that connotes more openness . Essay Inggeris? Only a completely totalitarian regime will be able to reserve these spaces for exclusive purposes and these limitations to the application of strategies allow individuals to develop tactics . Essay Rubric Core? Certeau describe tactics as individual techniques of knowing how to operate within the processes of a dominating system. Common examples of such techniques are informal communication, improvisations, unauthorized simplification of procedures, unintended usage, etc. #147;Sharing#148;, #147;collaboration#148;, and #147;emergence#148; #151; where users are in control #151; are more tactical and Shame Gregory,, open patterns. When designing a communication system one will have to come up with solutions that fulfill multiple purposes. One will never be able to design solely on the basis of either strategic or tactical needs. Experience from designing and testing a virtual learning environment in primary schools (Hoem, 2006) indicates that most users were satisfied when the designers focused on facilitating communication patterns found in persuasive, the middle of the model: #147;syndication#148;, #147;dialogue#148;, and #147;commenting#148;.
This is evaluation, not surprising, as long as these communication patterns are where strategies and tactics are most likely to merge. In the case of a communication system used in education this becomes a negotiated solution between the different needs of the administration, educators, and learners. Communication patterns provide a terminology that can be used to describe and discuss openness in relationships between users. Essay Common? However, research context always influences the deifinition of terms and there are numerous definitions of myself openness. For example: degrees of openness can be discussed by looking at technical factors that cause interruptions between an persuasive essay common core information source and those who are going to receive information. Communication patterns may still provide a useful framework, but emergence would probably not be characterised as the most open pattern is this scenario. The question of #147;place#148; is one essential aspect of openness that has not been discussed in this article. I mentioned some problems of physical access in the introduction, and when introducing Benkler#146;s model, but our relationships to space are perhaps where the most significant changes will come in the next few years. Production and consumption of ethnographic information was freed from some of the restrictions of space by essay writing, and essays, brought to a state of #147;no sense of place#148; (Meyrowitz, 1985) by electronic media. Today the importance of place is reinforced by the ability to position mobile devices, making it possible to control access to information and rubric common core, objects on the basis of where the phd thesis on obesity, users are in physical space.
Connections between users and objects in physical space have to be coordinated with a number of other connections in virtual space, calling for persuasive rubric core, a more complex understanding of the intersections between these spaces (Manovich, 2006), facilitated by communication systems. How we relate to different social situations becomes further complicated when users of networked communication systems have to make a number of significant decisions about information. Users will have to make continuous judgements about how they produce information, by where they are, who they communicate with, which devices they use, and so on. In Spanish? Users indeed may want to persuasive essay rubric, opt for less open solutions, characterised as restricted with a bias towards closeness. The designers of future communication systems need to in research, be strongly aware of how users benefit from different communication patterns in different situations. Jon Hoem gives lectures at the Department of Art and persuasive essay core, Media studies (IKM) of the ethnographic, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim.
He works with the Bergen University College (HiB) and is doing a PhD on persuasive common core, how to use #147;personal publishing#148; as a tool for learning. Nursing Evaluation?
